Oi, Cat People

No, not Khajiits, people who own cats.

I have a question for you. Simply put, have you ever had a cat with a compulsive urge to lick your fingers?

Seriously, this is getting old. I'm the only one she does it to. Of course, that may simply be because she likes me best (which she does), but any time I try and pet her she goes after my fingers with the gusto of a junkie to several kilos of free heroin. I can't sleep with my hands out of the covers because I'll be woke up several times per night by her attentions. I can't help but wonder if it's because I'm a smoker and I've inadvertently gotten her hooked on the nicotine residue on my hands or something.

Anybody ever seen something like this? Is it normal behavior?

Yes and I don't mind it. It's a sign of affection for them because they're cleaning you, one of the highest symbols of appreciation and respect and trust a cat gives to another is to clean them.

Though the whole smoker thing, maybe it is because of that? But I'm not one to have residue on my hands from smoking so it's not the case with me. Could be the case for you, but I can't tell that with my own experience because it's not the same cat as yours.

You're just her adopted giant kitten.

I actually own one cat that will lick for hours if I left her. I just pet her behind the head and near the butt so she can't reach me with her mouth lol. That or tell her tostop until she does.

Okay, so it seems to be mostly normal. Weird, I've had a number of cats over the years and this is the first one that licks. Ah, well, I'll just have to put up with it.

Animals show affection in many ways. This is one of them. I knew a Shih Tzu dog that loved to gnaw on my fingers, not rough or anything, but just like mouth one of my fingers. He would wrap his paws around my hand, get the finger into his mouth and just push his teeth against my fingers.

Some animals will lick human skin to get salt, so you might try putting a salt lick down (if they even make something like that for a cat, get the advice of a pet professional or vet on this)

Edit, and what do you know, they do make something like this

If I've had meat on fingers, one of cats would often lick my fingers. My other cat would rub her face on my hand.

I've never known one that liked fingers, but we have one that used to be obsessed with my ear lobes.
