Catapults and other war machines

Post » Mon Mar 22, 2010 9:04 am

I like playing with catapaults...in a game that is.... but don't really see how it would fit in and be worth the effort to design it. Even if there was quest for a siege attack, unless there were many chances to use it which again just doesn't seem to fit into this world.

Why?

Seriously, why? I don't see the point. What does it add to the game, other than making the game less outlandish and more real worldly?

Because I want to launch a hwacha at a bunch of naked Nord Berserkers, that's why. :teehee:

If we have siege warfare we should also have major battles. Like, part of breaking an ongoing siege. Complete with lines of archers and everything. Question is, can the game handle it, and handle it well (wrt FPS)? Do I want player to have access to catapults? Only in quests specifically doing it, no way should a catapult fit in players inventory :P So maybe if (and while) I'm part of some quest for a fitting faction (military faction). High tech military weapons should be out of reach for the simple adventurer. :)

catapult =/= siege

war machines were used against infantry and boats, too.

They had plenty of catapults in Daggerfall. I would think the Nords are even better at making war machines, lets see some good stuff.

I'm going to say yes... But limited... We have castles, we have boats, we have pirate coves... We need cannons... However.... Do I really want to see them? No, not really, not unless I'm on a ship, but the pirate adventures concept gets a lot of hits on this forum, and for good reason, while its mentioned in lore, it is a limited part of the TES universe, and thus should only make very limited appearances, if only it had been more satisfying when appearing... In any case all these things should be included, but never forget that in most wars siege engines were rarely used preferring large scale use of magic, and amplification of such engines with magic was pretty much limited to the dwemer, which are as we know gone. Abuses of the dwemers technological hankerings is also rampant among suggestions and to be avoided at all costs in my opinion, leave the dwemer to the developers to mess with as they wish without suggestion from the fans, after all give them an inch and they want a mile...

Who needs siege weapons when you have BATTLEMAGES. Seriously mages are pretty much walking multi-purpose artillery pieces. Maybe catapults or trebuchets to bring down walls but other than that you don't really need anything else when you have a self propelled small size engine of magical destruction at your disposal, or as the case may be a battalion of them.

I only see things like this popping up at specific points in the main quest. You might see a few laying around but they won't be in use for the majority of the time and it's unlikely the player will be able to interact with them.

You know the Bretons? They have some good battlemages, and there are siege weapons everywhere in High Rock.

yea i say like burning oil and catapults and what not but no cannons gun powder is a big no no for a fantasy game imo. when you have battlemages you dont really need gunpowder. magics gonna limit technology because iirc most tech was first used in the military and if they dont need it because they have a mage who can do it all then the tech wont be made.

While I don't want guns in my fantasy I do not find your logic sound. In Elder Scrolls magic is not a resource that is evenly distributed. Bretons and Altmers rock at magic the other races don't really have much of an advantage at all or any. Redguards aren't exactly overflowing with awesome battlemagic. You don't think they'd be spending time trying to come up with weapons that equal magic so their people with superior warrior skills can kick mage butt. Especially now that it isn't one giant empire, the individual races are going to have to think about their strengths and weaknesses and try to counter Altmer and Breton superior magic.

Theoretically it has been a 200 year leap in game time since the last novel I think people are predicting. While I hope this will be set firmly in the traditional fantasy time periods, they might advance tech to some degree, maybe early renaissance or something.

Catapults and older tech, they should not be usable though.

I want them only in major quests, such as blowing a hole through a wall of a fort to infiltrate it, or a ballista to take out a Ogre Captain, nothingmore.

If I didn't need a catapult to take out Mehrunes Dagon, do I really need one now? It would be cool to see it, but it would be way to overpowered in the game.

Incidentally I'm watching Mythbusters right now and they're launching cheese from cannons and setting oil fires. Just saying.

unfortunately we wont see it. unless they make two versions of the final battle, one for PC users and one for console users. the PC version would have over 100 combatants and you could have something like a Mount and Blade fight going on :starwars: . the console version would have 10 to 15 combatants and be similar to oblivions EPIC final battle  the PC version could have moving trebuchets and siege towers with destructible physics (shoot enough fire balls or swing that axe enough and you can take them down, while the console version could have a couple of static ones that wont have destructible physics for obvious reason.

unfortunately they wont make two seperate games so we will be stuck with a small epic battle with dimwitted AI or it will be heavily scripted and once you play it you know exactly what is going to happen ever other time you do it.
