Catapults and other war machines

Post » Mon Mar 22, 2010 5:37 am

Seeing as how a war just ended (or it seems like it from the book and a little bit of the teaser), and or is still going on, there should be massive war machines like catapults and cannons of a magical nature. However, instead of using advanced technology from this world, it should use technology that follows a more steam-punk altered timeline. The catapults should fire giant boulders with magical enchantments that add an extra 5 feet of destruction. Also, if they had cannons that are powered by soul-gems rather than gun powder, and shoot fireball spells, that would be epic, and not to advanced.

I personally think cheese is in order, but if I had to choose from a more serious option... I feel the 2nd one would be best (Keep your fallout out of my elder scrolls!!!)

Magical cannons are very far away from magical guns. There were cannons in our world HUNDREDS of years before guns, and besides, I said steampunk, they could go in an ENTIRELY different direction with their technology. Also, this is supposed to be set in a semi-Roman type of region (I mean Tamriel, not skyrim) The Romans had some pretty decent tech. I am going to add a few more voting options

Um just regular old rock flinging catapults... if they had cannons why would they need catapults they have virtually the same uses.

Catapults, Trebuchets, Ballistae- sure, why not.

Cannons? Only difference between "cannons" and "guns" is size, and my view remains: Oh, hell no!

I'm all for that, imagine if in the main quest you lead a siege attack on one of the main cities like Solitude or Winterhold, and you command troops to fire catapults and trebuchets, while the city's Ballista fire on the waves of troops. EPIC!

EDIT: This isn't a war, because it doesn't end. This is an idea solidly rooted in the majority of TES fans, and I think you will be hard-pressed to find an easy way to convince them that guns are a good idea. And please no to anything involving the use of gunpowder, including cannons. I wouldn't mind if they had trebuchets that threw explosives or something :drag:

boiling oil is a good idea too, its just a cauldron with "guess what" boiling oil that you tip over the battlements onto enemies at the base of your wall. good for defending a castle.

Catapults and trebuchets, sure. Cannons...Eh, I really don't want them. The reason I could justify them is because they were in Redguard.

Maybe. Siege warfare is really cool, but I don't know if it really meshes well with the exploring, questing, and dungeon crawling gameplay that Bethesda usually focuses on. Still would be nice to see siege machines around (and even defenses up on city walls and whatnot), but that's really more of an immershunny thing.

I agree with the idea of Catapults and Ballista. I mean they were in morrowind. if you visit most Dwemer ruins youll find one or two Loaded Ballista aimed to the sky So its not unlikely if added there could be a working models

Cheese for everyone!

In all seriousness, I wouldn't mind catapults and similar siege weapons if used sparingly. For example, if they are used to besiege one town or something, I'd be fine with that. But no gunpowder please. :)

I wouldn't mind seeing some catapults, ballistas and other such non-gunpowder based siege weapons, I think it's safe to assume they exist in the Elder Scrolls. The technology level seems about right, and considering that the setting has cities and castles with high wall, it would seem only reasonable to assume that some point, someone would have gotten the idea of building something for besieging such walled structures, and as has been pointed out, Morrowind had some Dwemer siege weapons, of course, they were Dwemer designs, but while modern equivalents might not walk on two legs, I can't see the shooting or throwing rocks part being something that modern people in the setting can't pull off, and that's really the important part in these things. Cannons I'm not quite so sure about, I mean, while cannons are simular to guns in that both are weapons that rely on gunpowder to fire projectiles, but the key difference is in size here, cannons are too large for characters to carry with them and use during normal gameplay. And my objection to guns comes from how it would effect the feel of the setting, not whether it fits the lore or not. But I'd say the answer is still no to that, since once you have cannons in your setting, if you give it enough in-universe time, it seems an inevitable step that guns will follow.

Although, I'm just saying I wouldn't mind seeing this sort of thing as statics in the game, at most, we might see a few scripted sequences unvolving the player or someone else using siege weapons during a few quests, if there is indeed a war going on, but seeing as this isn't a strategy game, I doubt we'll be able to use things like this during regular gameplay.

My opinion exactly. Mechanical projectiles, yes. Powder, oil or magical ones, aww hell naw. :)

If I had to choose between catapults and trebuchets I'd without a doubt choose trebuchets. They are just awesome.
Also Morrowind has actually shown that the Dwemer had ballistae. Though unusable to the player, they were there.

I suppose Catapults could be kinda' cool. They don't really fit into the game, and I struggle to see how they'd be used.
It's not like you could use them dungeon raiding and unless they were only in cities or part of a quest I don't really see them being necassary.

Trebuchets, catapults and battering rams. I'd like that very much. Very medieval.

Cannons... no, just no. Too modern. Anything that explodes is a big no to me.

personally i see no problem with having catapults etc in the game as statics for a sieged city or somesuch, maybe even used to break down a wall.

cannons are technically already in the world. someone mentioned redguard the game, and also in one of the books ingame it mentions cannons.
I don't know how much i'd like them in game, i have no qualms about the existence of gunpowder/explosives, only with rifles, which are a very different kettle of fish

the only thing i'd say is that ultimately i think both are rather pointless in tamriel, where there could just be a powerful mage to destroy walls or i could even get my thuum on and blast down a door with my voice.

If there's some sort of big battle taking place in Skyrim then I'm pretty sure we will see some catapults. But I don't think we'll be able to use them.

We saw a big battering ram in Oblivion during the siege of Bruma. So the fact that big, badass and brutal warmachines could be in the making is quite possible.

In the poll you wrote " Cannons and the sort (Think the type that blows the user up 9/10 times)". I just wonder, which cannons are you referring too? Unless you mean a cannon with loads of cracks and malfunctions with a lazyeyed drunk cannon operator that throws too much TNT around then I do not know which kind of cannons that would blow up 90% of the time.

Anyway, I vote for trebuchets and/or makeshift catapults. And maybe a bolt thrower of some sort. Well the ideas are many but the facts remain few, guess we will have to wait and see till the release more information :)
