Cathay Khajiit

Post » Tue May 03, 2011 2:49 am

The Khajiit in the new http://pcmedia.ign.com/pc/image/article/116/1162158/the-elder-scrolls-v-skyrim-20110415033047799.jpg looks bulkier and larger than we've previously seen.
Do you think it could be a Cathy or Cathy-raht breed, as opposed to the Ohmes-raht of Daggerfall and Suthay-raht of Morrowind and Oblivion?

For those who want to know more about the various breeds: http://www.imperial-library.info/content/khajiit-physiology-phases-and-forms
(Is "breed" really the right word here? I've never been sure.)

I'd say Cathay. Larger than the Suthay-Raht we have seen, but not nord huge (maybe slightly bigger), which would be the Cathay-Raht.

And since attributes have been done away with, I can accept seeing Cathays without breaking the race balance.

I thought so, too. But maybe it's just that body customization is improved so much that we can build our own "breed". :)

Yeah, I've been wondering that as well...

OH OH! Maybe we can choose between Suthay-Raht and Cathay-Raht at character creation, similar to the way the other races can select the muscle build!

While I like your explanation, I really think the armor he's wearing is metal and fur, adding to his bulky appearance. But yeah, your explanation still works.

Wow, I love that picture so much, I've made it the desktop on my Mac. Now I can study it when I'm bored.

Is it just me or does he look furrier besides the obvious fur armor he is wearing?

I was really hoping their fur would be white like a Siberian tiger :(

Wait...it doesn't have jaguar patterns, which is another defining feature of a Cathay, other than being the largest bipedal breed (well, Cathay-Raht being the largest and Cathay the second largest). Still looks to be a Suthay-Raht, unless fur patterns can be adjusted.

Yeah, I think you're right - and it looks like he has a beard.

God, there's an entire story in that picture alone. I think my first character will be Khajiit.

Well, you can choose skin tone in Oblivion, maybe there'll be different fur patterns and colors here.

Yeah, the armor surely contributes, but you can see he's got a very thick and muscular neck, a pretty broad torso, and a massive bicep.

You're right, so it's not a Cathay-Raht. Sadness is me.

I didn't know Cathay had jaguar patterns. I thought they were just called "jaguar-men" for being large, fierce, and of course cat-like?

Is there any mention of that besides the Pocket Guide?
Because if not, I'm sure it could easily be addressed. There's bound to be wide variation in coat color and pattern anyways.

Eh, when I see Jaguar-men, I think they also have a jaguar fur pattern. I don't even think the TES book offers a description of fur pattern either, other than Cathays being buff.

My avatar is a great example of Cathayness. Thanks to Mr. Wesley for his Morrowind mods!

Yeah, I went back and looked at Oblivion Khahiits and I think you're right.

BTW, do you think we're seeing a new set of armor? I mean, it looks like Fur, but that metal piece is too heavy to be on basic fur armor, isn't it?

It's beautifully done, whatever it is.

Well, melanistic jaguars without the characteristic pattern comprise 6% of the population, so it could still be. :D

Whatever it is, I do like it. Hopefully it's indicative of a broader, or at least different, set of armors than we had in Oblivion.

Could always be a retcon. Too early to tell, in my opinion. Looks bad ass, in any case.

In one of the radio interviews, Todd Howard suggested that they would be making Skyrim unique armors and then made reference to Morrowind, which had the standard group and a few extra sets. So in Morrowind, we got the "bug" armor sets, in Oblivion we got the standard plus guard, legion, Blades, and Arena (which always made sense to me).

Can't wait to see what we get in Skyrim.

It would be a very minor and easy-to-explain retcon, so I'm hoping that's the case. I want to see a new variety of my favorite race.
