Cats?

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 5:15 pm

I used to have a cat when I was a little boy, he was given to me by my aunt.
When she was a student she had been living in a little flat next to a huge are of scrub bushes.
She found this cat, that kept comming to visit her and she fed it. It was a HUGE stray cat that was about a foot and a half long and eventually it came into her house and would sleep in the courner of the room.
When she went to travel the world she gave him to us and he used to jump into my push chair every time I was not in it.
It used to bring us dead adolesent foxes, hedgehogs, rats, owls, sparrows and magpies.
Wild house cats are very good hunters, and if a cat and dog of the same size fought im almost certain the cat would win.

Thats not completely true there are factors other then size. It would depend largely on an animals bite force, strategic mental advantages, environment, equipment (teeth, claws, muscle mass), and multiple other things I do intend on get into. just size alone will not cause on animal to kill another animal of a different species.

so if cats are extinct, why not dogs too? dogs should be even more easier prey then cats..

as usual Beth made an mistake and now modders have to come to the rescue.

and cats go feral in a couple of weeks so they have a good chance of surviving in the wild.

Well, sure, small cute puppies and mixed breeds are easy prey, but try hunting down a regular hunting dog (of which there are many), sir you will not live to tell the tale.

Dogs are scavengers, not hunters, so they would not survive without humans presence. Of course, they can live as stray dogs, but without humans trash, etc they would die. Cats in other hand, can hunt their own food.

Taken from wikipedia:

Within the range of extremes, dogs generally share attributes with their wild ancestors, the wolves. Dogs are predators and scavengers, possessing sharp teeth and strong jaws for attacking, holding, and tearing their food.

They are more adept hunters and scavengers. While, you're average kitty cat isn't going to be much help with the post-war pests.

Cats have retractable claws so they would not be blunted by the harsh wasteland.

Oh and anyone can copy [censored] from Wikipedia...
Cats have highly specialized teeth for the killing of prey and the tearing of meat. The premolar and first molar together compose the carnassial pair on each side of the mouth, which efficiently functions to shear meat like a pair of scissors. While this is present in canids, it is highly developed in felines.

Well done "Fallout Survivor" you picked the single attribute from Wikipedia that is directly contradicted by Wikipedia...

Im a dog lover, I just think Cats are much more suited for solitary life.
I have a Chocolate Lab, and two Golden Retreavers.
I havent had a cat since I was little, I will probably get one when im older and have children, cats are much less clumbsey than cats when it comes to playing with childen.
(unless you get a psycho cat, but psycho cats are caused by being a [censored] owner not by the cats birth...)

Dogs and humans at times co-operate in some of the most effective hunting in the animal world.

The domestic cat hunts and eats over a thousand species, many of them invertebrates, especially insects ? many big cats will eat fewer than a hundred different species. Although theoretically big cats can kill most of these species as well, they often do not due to the relatively low nutritional content that smaller animals provide for the effort

So, yes, I'd rather my dog help me hunt post-war beasts then a kitty cat because it seems they are only able to hunt small birds and prey.

Of course they would (and indeed have for centuries!) They are pack animals, they hunt together, protect each other and keep each other warm! If the bombs do ever fall I guarentee that the last creature alive will be a dog, not a human! (well actually it will be a cockroach but you get my point).

It's true, in real life, humans, since they have thinner skin would likely die from radiation as opposed to most other animals who, thanks to thicker skin would just get sick but not die.

Obviously if you take an animal that a cat is known for hunting whereas a dog can't you'll see results like that. But, please tell me what human will eat a snake, I mean, sure, if it brings a bird or a mouse and you're hungry, it's useful. But, when has your kitty cat aided in hunting deer, alerted you about a fire burning your home or fended off an attacker?

Oh that's right, never.

Cat saves 8 people from house fire

Published: Jan. 24, 2008 at 10:11 AM

ALLENDALE, Mich., Jan. 24 (UPI) -- A cat named Oreo saved the lives of eight Allendale, Mich., people when their home caught fire Wednesday, officials said.

The heroic kitty began to cry when flames started in the family's garage about 5 a.m., WOOD-TV, Grand Rapids, Mich., reported Thursday.

Officials said smoke detectors in the home did not sound at the time of the fire, but luckily for the family, Oreo did. The cat's cries from the garage reportedly woke the family of eight and sent them rushing out of the house.

Fire damaged the garage and one bedroom, officials said.
Cat aids attack on burgler

A cat leapt to the aid of its owner by scratching a burglar who tried to raid a house in Cornwall.

The thief was also struck on the head by a 71-year-old woman who brandished her walking stick as he tried to clamber into her Truro home.

She had been woken by the sound of her bedroom window being forced open in the early hours of the morning.

And as well as suffering a blow from the woman's stick, the intruder was scratched on the arm by her cat.

'Brave lady'

A Devon and Cornwall Police spokeswoman described the lady's actions as "brave".

She said: "I don't suppose he was expecting to be met by a cat and a walking stick on the other side of the window."

Police say the burglar, who fled empty-handed, is likely to be suffering from scratches to his arm and a head injury.
*COUGH*

Its not about what is better as a "wasteland pet" were discussing what animal is suited better to survival in the wasteland...
Dogs are only such good bets because of years and years off training, cats have been reared as gods by the egyptions and tend to be treated with more respect, so they are not as tamed.

Yes, and we can all see the usefulness of a house cat, he lounges and takes a dump in a box.

Whereas dogs, descendants from wolves travel in packs, hunt in packs and without human training are still adept hunters.

Cats arn't adept hunters?

A movement has been made to support cats staying inside because cats are too good at killing.

I don't mention anything about them making super good companions to humans there did I?

And, they are, but not as much as dogs, they'd get eaten a lot quicker that's for sure.

wolves travel in packs, hunt in packs

In a desolate wasteland packs are unsustainable, your pack would be forced to split up or starve...
On thier own they would not be able to hunt, and starve.

Please base your next responce on some sort of fact as opposed to repeating the same point over and over.

Fact: Dogs hunt in packs
Fact: In a wasteland, because of instinct they'd stay in packs, contrary to your assumption
Fact: Because they are in packs they can hunt efficiently
Fact: If they were alone they'd still sustain themselves efficiently.

What aniamls do you know in desert enviroments that live in packs?
Packs are unsutainable, your "doggies" would out kill the wasteland if they remained in packs, and as they hunt in packs they would not be able to hunt effectively on thier own.
Thus either being killed by thier usual prey or dying from starvation not being able to kill thier usual pay.

Please read my responces...

I'm reading them, and they basically just translate into "cats will survive just cause".

Cats would be eaten by the pests in the wastelands, they are not very big and although their claws are sharp they would be massacred in an environment like the wastelands.

Well the Cat/Rattlesnake and Dog/Rattlesnake vids were good fun to watch but if you are trying to insinuate that the cat's reaction is better then you have failed dramatically! The Dogs reaction (Getting the [censored] out of there) is a survival instinct. The cat is suicidal! Cat gets bit and dies. Dog lives another day.

Dogs own cats.

No cat lives and gets food,
Dogs are more prone to stay around and fight against overwhelming odds whilst cats generally retreat and eat smaller prey.

Also another parrallel I will throw in, Cats protect thier babies...
Cougers, Lions, Tigers, Cheaters and Leopards are all know to only fight against over whelming odds in order to stall a preditor whilst their young escape...
Dogs leaver thier young.
