in addtion to a full lockup which requires a powercycle (holding the powerbutton down till it beeps, the PS3 beeps twice then shuts off)
sometimes my PS3 will start having trouble with video output in HDMI 720p format, my flatscreen LCD tv will not recognize the signal correctly.
after several power off/on's it will start working again.

Has anyone else seen this issue on their PS3?

Launch PS3 40gb (swapped in 320 GB 7200rpm HDD)

i have an original (fat) PS3 with an upgraded HD as well, and when the game locks up, it does it the same way you noted.
