Centurions

Post » Thu May 14, 2009 3:49 am

Centurions are supposed to be the toughest of the tough, they survived at least a decade of being used as cannon fodder in Caesars Legion and have killed hundreds of warrior enemies in heavy battle, using melee weapons, braving many hazards by running through and slaughtering opposition at close range. Chief Hanlon of the NCR Rangers even says that they are beyond anything the NCR has, and yet in the game they are level 12, compared to the Ranger Vet's 25. When i found out the Vet Rangers had a perk called Ranger Toughness that adds +30% DT, but Centurions lacked anything like this when they are obviously monsterously tough from all the hardship they had fought through... I believe that Centurions should get a major buff in any coming patches, increasing their level to 25 and granting them a perk like Centurion Toughness or Centurion Swiftness or both, increasing DT by +40% or more, and/or making them perhaps 15% faster or even making them do 10% more damage with melee weapons, seeing as they obviously have much more battle experience with insane conditions. Discuss this subject and perhaps suggest other things that would help balance them out or even make them stand up to their lore.

I know, i felt the need to get a numerical value, the poll there was scrambled and it is nearing the max post limit.

I do believe they need to be buffed up, its just i dont want them too buffed up to where they can slaughter a vet anywhere anytime.

I believe they should be on par with the Vets in gameplay, you know a 50/50 chance on who'll win, cause on my post on the other thread I said how the normal CL legionnaires can literally massacre normal NCR troopers, I dont want the Legion to be over powered with the Centurions being demi-gods.

60/40 would be better, because the Centurions rely on Melee and are sub-par marksman, whereas the Ranger has the RS and BG which are both overpowered.

Don't make them too resilient. I don't wanna have to fight through 50 albino rad-scorpions in the final mission. Maybe increase their damage or critical chance a bit?

Where did i say i wanted them to get thousands of health points? I just wanted them to be at the proper level for their rank and have a perk coresponding to ranger toughness, because they ARE, according to lore, much tougher than a ranger vet.

Didn't imply anything, just offered my opinion.

With the 60/40 I hope you mean a ratio of HPs

Oh it's okay, lets hug it out :P

On subject,
Bullet sponge? no.
Buffed up to meet the image they possess in lore? Hell, yes.

This is really hard to balance cause its hard to find a happy middle to where a melee derived NPC (Centurion) can live up to the lore of being able to kill hundreds of heavily armed Veterans with .45-70 caliber guns, and not break the bounds of reality so far that they're bullet sponge or be some Usain Bolt in all that armor and close up the gap between them with out being gunned down.

From the Vault:
Centurions are the most skilled and experienced members of the Legion's military; a legionary must personally serve in many campaigns and kill many hundreds of opponents before they can qualify to become a Centurion. Each Centurion leads a centuria of 80 men (which includes 8 to 16 Decanus officers). A group of 8 Centurions leads a cohort of 480 men (the largest military unit in the Legion). Centurions are rarely encountered in the Mojave Wasteland; due to their vast experience they are too valueable to squander on minor scouting skirmishes, and Caesar is saving most of his Centurions for his climactic assault on Hoover Dam.

Does this sound like a level 12 enemy?

@Blackwatercolt I wasnt saying they killed hundreds of Ranger Vets, as Ranger Vets are as close in strength to a Centurion that the NCR has, but in a world like Fallout where blonde-haired mutes can charge at a flamer and turn its nozzle on its user, is it hard to believe a hardened warrior like the Cent couldnt charge at full speed at an enemy?

No it does not sound like a level 12 enemy.

Its just I don't want Bethesda/Obsidian reading that the Centurion should be beefed up and they over power them alot and make them little semi-Legates, like how they decided that the sniper and such were too over powered and decided to NERF them.

And yes they can run full speed I just don't want those full speeds to be Olympic qualifying

is 10%-15% really that much faster? Get the Travel Light perk, it makes you 10% faster, it is good for melee builds and is really helpful in an indirect way, it isnt that much faster but it helps.

I personally thought that it did not really make sense how dozens of them were running around Hoover Dam.

Because using your best troops to win your largest most important battle to date doesnt make sense?

No, it does not make sense that a bunch of commanders who supposedly had to do prodigious amounts of fighting out number the amount of regular troops/

Lore>gameplay.

Sure Legion aren't as good as they are suppose to be but the lore is whats important, screw gameplay, lore takes the cake, if lore says they're better then they're better.
PA is suppose to be a walking tank but we can still beat BOS with ease.

Engine limitations, they could only put a certain amount of NPCs in the cell, and the chose to put the tougher ones, imagine every one of them was leading 80 legionarries.

@Gabriel So i shouldnt care that the Legions most experienced, hardnened, most badass soldier is level 12?

I thought there should have been fewer centurions, but they should have been tougher. And more prime legionaries.

Yes, but that wasnt the case, they werent as tough as they should be so they had to put more of them in.

Idk, it's hard too say. At Hoover Dam it's the first types of Soldiers they throw out...but if they were really hard then why not throw some vet rangers which should've been included at the Dam anyways. Ughh that makes me wanna rant xD

Simple, Ranger Vets are demi-gods compared to all other NPCs. it would make it too hard/easy depending on your alignment.

Yeah, you'd just think since the Rangers are so highly trained they'd use more than just the 5 or 6 that follow you in the NCR ending.
