Certain Codes Not Working on Forums

Post » Wed Aug 18, 2010 9:47 pm

Certain codes don't work properly on the forums. I'm not sure if it is suppose to be like this or not. The ones I know that are not working are [img] and [media].

When I type "[ media ] http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jpN60KKBAjc [ media ]" without the spaces and quotations, it shows up like this:

[media]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jpN60KKBAjc[/media]

And same goes for this... "[ img ] http://images.wikia.com/fallout/images/8/8b/Bethesda_Game_Studios.jpg [ img ]" shows up as this:

[img]http://images.wikia.com/fallout/images/8/8b/Bethesda_Game_Studios.jpg[/img]

Am I doing something wrong here or is it suppose to be like this?

It's intentional.

IMG tags are disabled and so are the other ones you listed. I'm pretty sure this is all in the forum rules... you know, that thing you agreed to read when you joined. ;)

Actually, I just read that again and it would appear that there is no info on the disabled tags in there. Weird.

Anyway, the IMG tags were originally disabled to lessen the strain on the people with slow internet connections and speed up forum browsing. I think.

It's probably harder to moderate with IMG tags too. You can't really put an automatic censor on an image, and a link to an image has to be clicked to be viewed, so if it's something bad other members can post a warning.

There was also that time when CD was shut down after the night it was flooded with porm IIRC. They stopped using IMG tags soon after.

Its also annoying looking at a forum where everyone has a 500 pixel signature banner with their name in red letters on a background of zombies, and where there are 1080p images in posts wherever possible. A text only forum looks much neater and more professional.

- You can limit the physical size of a signature

- You can have images be auto-resized

Pretty much every forum I frequent that allows images do both of these

Still annoying, though. I know I can block the image, but I'd rather not go through the hassle. I like this forum; I'm not inundated by poorly Photoshopped FF and Halo crap.

Exhibit A: Any combination of "images" and "internet" ever.

Because people used them to spam the forums full of images and videos, and disabling the tags brought that practice to a screeching halt.

A shame i wasn't here when the notorious "Gay porm night" happened :lmao:

But i like it. Image spam is more annoying than text spam. "BioWare Social Network" and "ManGiraffeDog" comes to mind :hehe:

There are scripts that allow you to see images on the forum. I use one by Argomirr. http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/79990It wont allow others to see the image directly on the forums, but it works for yourself.
Assuming you are using Firefox and Greasemonkey.

It should also be relatively easy to add this effect to my Chrome extension

Assuming you are using Firefox and Greasemonkey.Any semi-decent browser (AKA: Not Internet Explorer, as every other browser has support for userscripts)

fix'd

Though I find that script fairly useless, as it doesn't allow you to easily share images and other media with others, which is the purpose of those bbcode tags.

I thought it may work in other browsers, but I never tried it myself. Thanks for fixing.

So why don't they just remove the button that inserts an image or media? :fakenopic:

And for people that feel this way, almost all forums have the option to disable signatures in your control panel settings :P

Yeah, but some people don't want to be missing out on what others can see. Like me. I also dislike signatures. I don't hate them, but they're not wonderful. I don't want to disable them because sometimes people are like "Nice signature!" And I don't want to be missing out on what others can see. They also don't bother me too much.
