Certain Companions Can't be Assigned to Tasks

Post » Fri Jan 22, 2016 5:00 am

Was moving my main base from Sanctuary to Castle so to speed up the progress I gave Cait, Hancock and MacCready a suit of power armor and moved them to the Castle.

When I arrived at Castle all 3 of them were out of their power armor and the suits were scattered around the Castle. To top it all off neither of them can be assigned to tasks (I don't even get the option) but Strong can still be assigned to do stuff which is what I don't understand.

Anyone have this problem or know how to fix it?

Followers can't be assigned to do tasks. I think it's because they aren't really settlers.

You can assign

Spoiler
McCready (since he is a hired gun)

to do settlement tasks, until you start doing the NPC quests.

Weird that they are getting out of PA, without you commanding them to, though.

I already had Hancock and MacCready manning the guard posts at Sanctuary so that's not correct. I want them to man the guard posts at Castle now but i don't have the option to command them.

Some companions can be assigned to tasks, but for some reason not all of them can be. It seems a bit buggy though. I used to be able to assign Piper to tasks, and I no longer can. There definitely wouldn't be an issue with her regarding a companion quest or anything like that, because you don't even have her as a companion until after you complete her 'companion quest' (if you even want to call it that).

I wouldn't suggest sending them away to wander across the Commonwealth with your power armor. They can randomly decide to get out of it and leave it behind. Several people have lost suits of power armor this way and ended up finding them later in some totally random place on the map.

For whatever it's worth though, I've found that most of the companions will start tending crops on their own, even if you can't assign them directly to them.

Before the latest beta patch, I couldn't assign Cait to anything. But after the patch, I can. So maybe this is a bug.

Some NPCs are apparently designed not to accept assignments, such as Arlen in The Slog (both before and after the patch).

Now I can't assign tasks to Sturges, even though I could before. The problem happened before and after the patch.
