Hoping someone can help or at least confirm my findings. I bought Crysis 2 on Sunday morning all keen to blast some alien butt. All went well, until I had to escape the lab. Right when the heli is supposed to come crashing through the wall, my PC rebooted. I investigated all the major issues for these kind of crashes...Checked the temps of GFX, CPU and Memory. No faults found. Then moved onto forums which suggest PSU issues with voltages, but after confirming that my 650 Watt Silverstone PSU is of decent quality and quantity, I decided to let that myth slide.
I eventually tried lower GFX resolutions, lesser spec settings etc. All with no luck. I then went and tried "alt-tab"(windowed mode) right before the scene that crashes my box. Somehow that seems to work.
I passed the heli scene eventually, and managed to get to the chair where they scan your suit. Again the cutscene crashed my system right before the heli fell out of the sky. Reboot, "Alt-tabbed" and bob's your uncle. Made it through to the next level where you have to escape the aliens. Rebooted again. Now I'm stuck where I have to interface with the three "veins" on the sunken level, and it seems I can successfully reproduce the reboot scenario. This time unfortunately "Alt-tab" doesn't seem like a viable solution. It crashes regardless.
Some observations during my "testing" experience (I'm a Performance Test anolyst, so apologies for the anol approach):
NB: observations below are limited to fixing the crash, they obviously have an effect as you can imagine
1) No nVidia driver upgrade or downgrade made any difference (currently running 275.33) Tried 266 odd as well.
2) Updated BIOS settings had no effect
3) Underclocking / stock setup / OC to 4.8GHZ had no effect
4) Settings regarding resolution / system level made no difference except for looking "purdy" or not
5) System tweaks to fans and temperatures had no effect
6) Running in compatibility mode for XP SP3, VISTA SP2 had no effect
7) Running as admin did nothing
8) Running with "-DX9" in my path for the EXE did nothing
9) Testing through patch versions 1.1, 1.2, 1.4, 1.8 had no effect
10) Allocating only 4 cores had no effect
11) Setting CUDA to run on CPU or GFX dedicated had no effect
12) uninstalling had no effect
13) Cleaning the registry (lols to self) had no effect
14) Updated direct X drivers to latest had no effect
15) Finally tested on another rig, crashes persist, although in other areas/actions
16) Crysis 2 tweak util had no effect (and needs a "Revert to defaults" option)
So, the setup I'm running...
PC Spec:
Windows 7 64bit
intel Core i7 2600K (@4.8gHz)
4GB Kingston DDR3 @ 2333mHz
intel P67BG Mobo
nVidia (XFX) GTX 285
2TB Seagate Barracuda
Creative SB Audigy II

Test Drive Unlimited 2
Call of Duty Black Ops

So...
Any clues so far?
Anyone?
Let me know, I'll happily "test" your tweaks.
