Chance of being best RPG of all time?

Post » Wed Aug 25, 2010 4:41 pm

Not everybody will agree that it is the best RPG ever, so therefore that would be a ludicrous claim. Perhaps I could have worded my previous post better.

I understood, it's just kind of a "duh" statement.

Oh, grow up. You can still be whatever you want to be in the game; Bethesda has only made a more natural system that doesn't lock you into one class you choose at the beginning of the game.

yeah but say if someone could come up and ask hey what are you what is your profession whats your specialty? how could you answer, im a jack of all trades? if i want to make my character unique how could i do that now? im just well nameless say i want to become necromancer which i always do cause roleplaying evil players is 10,000 times more interesting and fun than playing good ones and how am i going to define my profession? they should at the very least be generous enough to provide a changeable class/title option for yourself so i can at least feel like i am roleplaying what i love, and may god have mercy on me and add the playable lich

Chance of being the best of all time? lol wut? For me an RPG insinuates that you have a party of adventurers embarking on a grand quest or someone to role play with. I categorize TES as adventure games with rpg elements.

I still have my nerd dice and a D&D gaming group, those are the best rpg's I've ever played.

Opinions are subjective, and everyone has them. But really, in twenty or thirty years do you really think Skyrim will be mentioned by any but the most hardcoe fans of the game? Not a chance.

DnD and TES are two differently things. DnD is a multiplayer rpg and can only be multiplayer. TES is a single player RPG. How many players you have does not characterize an RPG.

Why do you need a label on your menu? If you want to roleplay that someone walks up to you and asks what you are then say your a Necromancer. Nothing is stopping you from saying what you are. You don't need the character screen to tell you that you are a necromancer, just you have to say you are a Necromancer.

I see there's a lot of debate on the what makes an RPG and i admit that the criteria by which i judge an RPG made me wonder if Oblivion could even claim to be one. Even with an improvement i can't see Skyrim being a good CRPG. I know i'll get a decent amount of fun from it and it has potential to be a great game but a great RPG... nah, great RPGs don' have the widespread appeal that this game wants and needs.

I tend to see an RPG as a game that allows you to define your character through choice and consequences. From my experience Oblivion lacked a lot of choice and consequence was almost entirely absent. You can apply this to the quests where, entertaining as they were, they lacked branching or multiple solutions in favour of telling a complete mini story. You can apply it to the level scaling and the game world where going anywhere didn't punish you nor reward you beyond the visual. You can apply it to the main quest where not responding to the urgent call of Kvatch had no effect and saving the world only gave people something to gossip about other than mudcrabs. You can also apply it to the skill system where the amalgamation and removal of skills cut down on your options for specialising and defining your character. Less choice means less opportunites forgone. I don't see Skyrim full scale changing this enough to compete with the likes of Arcanum.

I'd also say that an RPG is about progression and for that to occur in an open world that world has to be relatively static in regard to the player. This means that the player can see and feel his growing power by the existence of lesser powered creatures. If level scaling returns in its most obnoxious form then progression becomes meaningless.

Lastly an RPG is about the charcter's stats and skills defining the experienc eand not the skills of the player. This means that minigames make it a poor RPG since the players skill can bypass a characters weakness (lack of consequence). I've no doubt minigames will be back, fun as they are they have no place in a true RPG.

Best RPG of all time? I believe that title would go to the Baldur's Gate series, no doubt. No, I am not a "really devoted fan" and have played every decent/amazing rpg of any sort ever made.

As for Skyrim... yes, I think it will be the best of its kind beating out morrowind/oblivion. (hopefully)

There's an okay chance, but it'll be hard pressed to top Daggerfall.

Simplicity contradicts being able to be the best RPG, so the chances are pretty slim by now. Mostly because of (possible) lack of Attributes.

High.

But you should add the "Until now" phrase at the end of the centence.

Computer horse power is continually raising, and new technologies are constantly being developed, and when finally high quality procedurally generated game content becomes available, like voice overs, geometry, events, quests, stories, meshes, textures, and the like, You can not even begin to imagine what styles of games would start to appear on the shelves.

But until now, Skyrim has a high chance of becoming the best fantasy RPG game ever, or you can drop the "fantasy" part as well.

i know but it's the classic original thingy magiggie i dont know i just feel that character specialization was one of my most favorite features of the saga and now their just new aging everything, soon there wont be games that have that classic stat point system i think its crap this game better be something else cause if i cant get a feel for it like morrowind and oblivion when i play my character ill just freak there making the system like fable 2 and that game was gay

I don't think there's a chance, the history of the genre is just too rich. It'll be a fine game, though.

So far we have heard mostly about stripping RPG aspects, so right now it doesn't look to good. It cans still be an awesome game. But the Best RPG of all time? Let's hope it's still a RPG when it's released.

We don't know much about dialog yet, accept that it won't be zoomed in. So we don't know yet if the dialog is anything good, or just there so you can get your 'kill stuff there' quest.
There are some job/profession things added cooking/farming/mining/woodcutting/blacksmithing some sources list alchemy and enchant with them, though unlikely it would mean 4 new skills (blacksmithing merge with armorer, enchant replaces mysticism) and confirmed 3 skills less would mean a total of 7 skills from Oblivion removed (blade blunt merged, speechcraft mercantile merged, acrobatics athletics merged, security sneak merged, light and heavy armor both removed? still 1 skill to few removed). So probably the job things aren't going to be skill related, it could still be fun but right now it's about the only feature confirmed that adds role playing, don't even start about perks...

i cant believe this i mean i love bethesda thanks to them i have had some of the most fun, roleplaying countless characters, but i just dont think this new direction is in the best interest for the saga, and well i hope they balance this off with new add ons like the lich and werewolf and morrowind style vampires and a much more deeper indulgence with necromancy if they cant deliver me these simple requests that so many of us have demanded i see no need to bother with the sequel. maybe i'd rent it and thats it.

Though I'm almost 100% sure it'll be GOTY, I really don't know it'll be the best RPG of all time. To me, RPG isn't really about AI or skills, but about being immersed in the game world. The only games I've ever played that really pulled that off for me were Morrowind and New Vegas. Hopefully, the Vegas trend will continue with Skyrim, but for me it's really something I can only decide on when I have the game.

For me, quite possibly - but time will tell :) I reckon that unless they make some horrific mistakes (and I mean really bad, and let's face it, they've been doing this for long enough to avoid that, I think), it's pretty much guaranteed to get good reviews - although I'm not sure the reviewers will call it the best RPG of all time. I voted in terms of my own opinion, not how I think it would be received by everyone else, so I voted high.

Stripping RPG Aspects? Tell me how.

They've taken out the hunt for +5 to 3 stats (which was so fun, right?) and thus taken out stats. I don't remember a role-playing game being a "Stats Hunting Game". Just because attributes were a common thing in RPG's previously, doesn't make Skyrim any less of an RPG. For all you know all future games will get rid of attributes in the future. Diablo 3 already has automated stat increases, The Witcher 2 won't have stats, and those ( along with skyrim ) are the biggest RPG's planned for 2011. See a trend? Pretty soon, manually increased attributes will be an antiquated mechanic, and for good reasons. Breaks immersion when you take out some zombie, level up, and suddenly get stronger, faster, and smarter instantly. Not realistic at all, good change.

Let's be honest, Morrowind and Oblivion had TOO many schools of magic, and they stupidly overlapped. Condensing to 5 schools was a needed move. And they brought back enchanting! AND SMITHING IS NEW!

So you see now, more skills/attributes doesn't = better RPG. It doesn't even have anything to do with ROLE PLAYING, which is the essence of an RPG. They are just mechanics, and Skyrim is going to improve them. Enough with these silly arguments.

I'm saying 'somewhat unlikely' - I really don't think it'll beat Morrowind. But It can definitely come second place :D

Eh? No. How are manual changes an 'antiquated mechanic'? Also, I do not regard 'immersion' as a good indicator whether an RPG mechanic fits well into a game or not. I've never really been immersed in a game to be honest, except when I was a kid.

Bit of a vague question really. Do you mean best RPG of all time (as in, will never be unseated as the phrase actually means), or are you using hyperbole and actually mean best RPG made so far?

Because I answered in context of the former question and would put it at about 50%, but that's extremely optimistic. At the very least, what about TES:VI? :P

For the latter question my answer would have been significantly higher, but that's only based on my personal opinion. Prior to Fable 3, TES and Fable were neck and neck for the title of king of RPGs for me. After the aforementioned abysmal failure, TES is undisputed ruler of the genre, and with all the improvements made over Oblivion I can see Skyrim taking the throne for the next few years at least. So yes, Skyrim will be the best RPG yet released for me out of the ones that I have played. That's a lot of quantifiers.

I reckon it's going to be far more Oblivion 2.0 then Morrowind 2.0 though. Whether or not that is a good thing remains to be seen, but I think the series is going in the right direction. Streamlining the gameplay can only make it more fun. It's when you streamline it so much that it loses all semblance of variety or challenge that you take it so far *cough* Peter Molyneux *cough*.
