Chance of being best RPG of all time?

Post » Wed Aug 25, 2010 9:19 am

With the leaked images and information, it looks like Bethesda is sweeping up all of the quirks and oddities that held back Oblivion from being the best classic RPG of all time.

So my discussion question is: How much of a chance does Skyrim have of blooming into the best Fantasy Role-Playing Game of all-time? I know this is premature, but give you best estimates.

The reason I ask this is because Bethesda rarely messes up, is very creative and has the balls to try new things in their games, and absorbs fan criticism to create better games.

An Okay chance based on what I know until now. If it's 20% better than Oblivion, I'm pretty much ok.

Dunno if it'll be able to top my opinion of Morrowind, but I will bet my hat that is will still be a really freaking awesome game. :foodndrink:

Ouch. Painful memories. I recently tried to dust off my old Might and Magic 7 disc, but I couldn't get it to run under Windows 7 64 bit Ultimate Edition. I had to play Wizardry 8 instead, which has speed issues on my multicore machine.

I have Oblivion at my number one spot and I do think Skyrim will surpass it, so I voted yes. This is, however, ENTIRELY subjective. The so-called RPG community can't even agree on what an RPG supposedly is, so I doubt they would ever agree on the best.

The chances are very slim imo.

And I very much like what I heard so far and feel it is shaping up to a contender to best in the series.

but best RPG of ALL time. Doesn't leave much hope that TES6 will drop bombs all over it now does it.

For some reason, I could never finish Morrowind, not even after modding the crud out of it.

Don't really know why, many TES fans claim it is the best game in the series, but I always enjoyed oblivion more. Maybe it is time I busted out my GOTW copy one more time and gave it the good old-fashioned college try. Couldn't hurt. After all I am planning to beat Oblivion one more time with a bow'n'sword Nord to get in the mood for Skyrim.

There we go, someone else that had the same problem. The only reason I finished Morrowind the one time is because I wanted to know how the Main Story ended lol. I've tried to play it several times since but I just don't get far because I just can't get immersed in the game. I personally think the best RPG of all time is Daggerfall and that's a tall order but so far Skyrim is looking like it might shape up to at least get close to Daggerfall and maybe even surpass it, only time will tell.

I feel bethesdas games get less and less RPG-y and more and more action-y with each installment so i am extremely doubtful this will be the best RPG of all time, sure, i expect it will be a good game especially when compared to games on the market today but, the best RPG ever, i dont think it stands a chance.
Just my opinion of course.

Yeah because no game will ever come close to being as good as Morrowind right....

I don't understand what you're getting at. The dude you quoted actually thought another game was better than Morrowind.

"Of All Time" is asking alot. TES story and themes are fairly generic. I still have bias towards the Ultima series just because they were an effective vehicle for practical philosophy, eschewing the usual bland Animism/Elementalism of most RPGs...that and they were largely the inspiration for almost everything else out since. I can't recall any other game which took the subject of beliefs as seriously.

Morrowind holds the throne, but from the looks of it with the further loss of skills, Skyrim has little chance, but the Nords and Dunmer have warred for centuries, perhaps the Nords will prevail!

Yeah, but like, people seem to hold Morrowind as being this almighty pinnacle of TES series, when Skyrim has every reason to be 10x the game Morrowind was. It just gets on my nerves.

Well, that is their opinion, and they are entitled to it.

As it stands, Morrowind is my favorite TES game, and possibly favorite game period. Will I instantly with-hold the chance for Skyrim to take it's place? No, of course I'll give it the chance. I do, however, feel that Morrowind will stay at the top for me.

More action and epic fighting doesn't make it less of an RPG. I'm not sure why people are correlating the old paper and pencil aspects of an RPG (Attributes) to being an RPG. They don't have to have stats that you put points into to be an RPG. An RPG consists of three things, World, Gameplay and Story. Oblivion had the perfect world, which is obviously being transferred over to skyrim, they are revamping the gameplay and it seems like it is going to be epic and brutal (hurray!) and of course story, which Morrowind had the perfect story. Now if they can combine a world like Oblivions, a story like Morrowind's and the gameplay they have described then this game is an RPG and a damn good one at that.

Unless attributes are confirmed to still be in, and the skills and perks are properly balanced (instead of Fallout 3's failed balancing act), then this is my opinion.

Eh, the stories is TES games are kinda generic. Not the lore, the lore is very original. The storyline's, however, tend to be pretty cliche.

Perhaps. To some, it will be considered the "best RPG of all time," as you say. Others, myself included, will likely consider it a great game. Others still will consider it something else entirely. It's all matters of opinions, really. And after all, who are you, who is anybody to challenge that?
