Change an Armor Item into a Clothes item?

I apologize for the cross-post; I originally posted this in the Construction Set forum, which doesn't seem to get much traffic.

Anyway, is it possible to simply change an Armor item into a Clothes item while keeping the same Editor ID and any other information that would be necessary for use in any referencing scripts within a mod? Possibly using TES4Edit? I'm trying to modify the MOE Lichcraft and Lycanthropy module of http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=7902 for my own use.

What I want to do is change the Spectral Crown armor item that is equipped on your Spectral Lich character as heavy armor into a hood clothing item. I can change the mesh, icons, and item name simply enough in the Construction Set, but the item is still "Armor". And my mage/lich's spell effectiveness drops considerably while wearing heavy armor!

I've also tried deleting the Spectral Crown item from the original .esp file using TES4Edit, creating a new .esp containing only a Spectral Hood clothing item with the same Editor ID as the Spectral Crown in the original .esp, and loading the two .esp files into the CS with the new .esp loading later. However, that causes scripts in the original .esp to fail to locate the referenced Spectral Crown item even though its Editor ID is the same as the Spectral Hood.
Would ESMifying the mod enable me to make this type of change?

If all else fails, I guess I can edit the mod's scripts to reference the Spectral Hood with unique Editor ID.

Hopefully that made sense... Thanks for any advice.

I believe it is possible to make a new item in your own mod, and then change the formid and editorid to be the same as the one you want to replace.

You have to make the new item in the CS, and then change the FormID in TES4Edit, I think.

I think the reason you're having a problem now is that if you make a new item with the same editorID, the game automatically changes it to separate the two things.

Corepc has done wacky things like this, though.

By far, the easiest way is to modify the original file with a new item and then use "search/replace" on the scripts to change to the new item.
