Change the conversation style?

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 5:18 am

I dont know about you, but I hate the way you talk to people in Oblivion. I feel like I'm playing oregon trail again whenever I talk to anyone, theres no room for dramatics. Plus, does no one in Tamriel talk with their hands?
I'd prefer a Mass Effect or Dragon Age style, where you choose the tone or way you want the conversation to head, and your response is voice acted and you can see yourself talking (if you want, those games are 3rd person, so I guess you could have the option of using 1st person for dialouge, but still have the conversation acted out) I think if it is done right it wouldn't even mess with modding. And scenes where you are discussing something important would be way more interesting, and you could even talk to more than one person at once (because apparently no one does that in TES lol).

Anyways, don't hurt me, just an idea that probably wont be implemented in this series ever.
No poll because this forum already has too many lol

EDIT: Forgot you were muted in Dragon Age, but I like that style too.

Im gonna hurt you real bad.

In Fallout they have body motions and stuff like that. With the new engine and starting from scratch I hope they do a lot more of this kind of thing. :)

Meh, it's just a different style game. If I wanted ME or DAO style I'd play that game.

I wouldn't mind if the NPCs could move and all that when they talk, but keep the traditional dialogue system of picking actual sentences instead of vague ideas or tones that get acted out in ways you can't be certain of.

I guess the actual voice acting wouldn't really be the important part for me, but I'd love to be able to intimidate anyone by pulling a knife to someones throat, or give a character a pat on the back.

I’d like to be able to have more of an effect on the mood and reactions of npc’s, but the players character should remain mute and in your imagination.

Part of what makes TES TES is not imposing an identity on the player, know what I mean?

The mass effect system puts me into the game a little more than the current style, but not saying there is anything wrong with it.

I'd prefer the PC stay mute, but I'd like it if Skyrim didn't have the creepy zoom-in-on-face thing. Dragon age style seems fine (the protagonist was mute in DA too).

Id like it if like.... you go near someone you click A and this open dialogue but you can still move freely. so while someone speaks you can just get away or stuff like that. see the new Starwars The Old Republic to see how it would look

Yeah, I find the Fallout/ES style dialogue pretty stale now after playing games like Mass Effect. I understand that we sacrifice the ability to hear ourselves speak when we allow for customisability of the player character to such an extent, but in many ways I find it worse when the game tries, Fallout style, to give too much personality to my responses. If the player is to play a minimal role in any given conversation, I'd prefer they just say the bare minimum and let my imagination fill in the response.

I hope they can do something to make conversations a little bit more dynamic, and a little less 'out of world' talking-heady, as has been the case with Oblivion and Fallout.

I do want the npcs to do actual body motions when talking, but I dont want to hear my character talking either. It's the Half-life effect, if you don't hear a different voice than your own, it's easier to imagine it actually being you.

I liked the Dragon Age Origins dialogue, I'd not mind having something similar in TES.

I did not like the way Mass Effect did it... I found the conversation wheel confusing. I was okay with having a voiced main character in Mass Effect, but it would not fit TES. In TES I want to imagine what my character is like when he/she is talking. It's an important part of the roleplaying IMO.

First off, your character should not have a voice. It's way too much work to add voices to each and every race, male and female.

As far as the dialouge system, I wouldn't be against a slight change to it so that we can set a tone and get angry with someone or speak softly with another. Maybe you can incorporate that into the useless skill of speechcraft and finally make that worth using.

Tones are nice, but I'd prefer if we had them in addition to normal text to pick, not as a replacement. Also, I'd like to have:

* Time moving around you normally when you speak to someone.
* Ability to move around the place (even leave the conversation by simply walking away) during talking.
* Ability for more than two people to hold a conversation

I hated Dragon Age's conversation method, what I really want is the way Oblivion did it, make it a mid-shot of the NPC, and let it be real time conversations, not freeze the game conversations, as in things can still happen while I'm talking. I would also like the potential for more than one-to-one conversations and the addition of three or even four people conversations, maybe if they let us move our view-point while conversing.

Oblivions style was fine but they could tweak it but we don't need bioware's conversation system or as I like to call them Custom Square Enix Jr.

I think he meant he would like Oblivion's conversation style, but with real time dialog. I would personally like the ability to tell lies to people. To run up to a guard and beg him to help you, that there is an emergency. He will follow you, but after a minute or so they begin to grow suspicious and after another they go back to where they were.

I know I might be in the minority here but I really liked the dialogue options in Alpha Protocol.

You had to decide on an option in a limited amount of time and it affected the rest of the conversation, it was far from perfect but IMO realistic.

I played Daggerfall for the first time yesterday and that had a kind of different dialogue than both Bioware's and Betheda's current dialogue systems, which I think would work quite well in Skyrim if some things were changed.
I thought of a possible new system and will just put it down here. Each option should be able to be asked differently, each type of NPC prefers a different style of communication. An orc wont like to talk to people who talk formally or intellectually therefor will give less information to someone who chooses those options. Alcohol, skooma, intelligence and speechcraft levels should be taken into account when the dialogue options are shown. This would be difficult to make but would make conversations so much better.
