Changing direction in mid-air

Post » Wed Feb 02, 2011 11:30 pm

Something that I always noticed was how you can change direction mid-air so easily in TES games and Fallout 3 and NV. It feels so unrealistic, but it can also be useful.

I think Skyrim should be more realistic however, and, with their new engine, I'd bet they fixed this aspect.

Meh, it'd be nice to see it fixed, but its no biggie in my book.

Yeah, it is no biggie. It most certainly wouldn't make or break the game, but it'd be no biggie to fix too, so i don't see why not.

I feel like videogames have ingrained it into my head since so early on, that I'd not be able to grasp the more realistic version of jumping. That said, I'm willing to try.

Changing your direction in mid air is actually almost aerodynamically impossible. Changing Direction in mid air requires thrust or lift, neither of which is something that humans can do. With a really long fall like a sky dive the speed of you falling through the air provides enough lift to change direction, but with short falls theres little you can do. (I learned that the hard way when I was 11, don't ask)

I think we can all agree it's unrealistic. It's good you tested it out for us though... for that we thank you.

I liked having it in Oblivion because sometimes changing directions mid-air is the only way to avoid being bumrushed by a group of high-level enemies. If they take away that ability, they need to add something to replace it like a multi-directional roll maneuver.

Come on people, it is a video game. We can't actually want to make this game too realistic because it would make it boring.

I think it's ridiculous without wings/parachute or magic. It must be fart power. :D

When a character's Athletics and Acrobatics are maxed, it's like being able to levitate temporarily. I can't believe people are actually complaining about that.

^ didn't you just explain why people are complaining about it? and it's even very apparent on lower level acrobatics and athletics.

This "feature" got me around a few gates in the planes of Oblivion, so yeah, it's game-breaking and should be removed.

It's kind of hard not to use jumping the TES.

I've always thought of it as a substitute for other things that we can't do.

For instance, there are basic climbing skills that a nimble character would be able to use but the game doesn't have, instead you can jump "around" certain obstacles.

Also, "aiming" my jumps properly is very difficult, so I've always thought of the ability to change directions as more a substitute for having jumped properly in the first place. For example, jumping forward instead of up is almost impossible to do, so I imagine the game alternative is to jump up and then direct your character to the desired spot.

To me, it's always been a way around or a poor substitute for better mechanics.

I'm not saying it shouldn't be fixed, but it definitely shouldn't be removed unless there are better substitutes for climbing and a more realistic ability to jump how a real person might.

good point i actually agree. The whole acrobatics/jumping system needs to be reworked. I really hope you can grab on to ledges.

I was going to say it could be a perk, but this sounds better. It also sounds like a devs way of thinking/justifying.

Yeah, if we got magik then i guess we should be able to walk through walls too, or have 4 arms.

I guess I'm "weak wired willed" cause i feel like i HAVE to jump. I can't stand playing the game without jumping.

It's a video game thing. It's part of what makes controlling your character fluent. I absolutely want to be able to change direction in mid-air.

We could do that in Arena. ;D

This.

Only time I really notice it is when it's a core feature of gameplay (i.e, in crazy-airtime platformers)
