Changing an existing npc appearance

Simple as it is, changing an existing npc appearance in the CK, go to the character you wish to change, do your magic and save the esp.
But surprise, when I activate the esp, nothing happens.

This is how Farkas looks after a bit of face cleaning in the CK:

Some npc mods as Better Followers or Sven, provide the head of the npcs they change, I imagine that is necessary to change the look of any character more drastically, as adding a custom hair.
Ok, I can uncompress Skyrim BSA's and get Farkas head (ops, that didn't sound too nice to poor Farkas XD).
I can change some bits of it with Npc editor and get that nif changed. I can get rid of the face dirt but I can't change nor remove warpaints and freckles.

The more subtle changes can be done with the CK, but alas, it don't change anything activating only the esp.
I read here in the forums about some CK bugs, but can something that simple be bugged?

In some response in the CK bugs thread, someone talked about exporting the npc facegen values to get rid of problems with skin tone.
My issue is entirely different, a simple npc face editing not being successful for some reason, unknown to me by now.
If I need the game to force a different character appearance providing the nif to the facegeom folder, how can I edit that nif using only the CK?

It seems nobody else has this issue.
I found a new hint on this, I'll try exporting facegen values from CK, just in case.

Got it working
In the actors window just selected Farkas and pressed F4. CK just asks you if you wish to export the selected character data.
Press on "yes" and you receive a "done" message. Thanks Goliatron for your hint in the Nexus forums.
It seems is absolutely necessary to do that for every character you change aesthetically to work properly ingame.
No nif head needed for simple changes.
