Is there any way to change oblivions default music for the when you are in the plains of oblivion, for example I want to have prodigy: invaders must die, as the default music playing in the background instead of the usual standard oblivion soundtrack. any way to do this?

If you are on PC, grab the MP3 for the song yuou want, go into your oblivion data folder, and find the folder named "Music" If you only want that one song, delete the files in the Dungeon folder, then drag the MP3 in there. It will play in all Oblivion realms, and other dungeons.

I was under the impression you have to actually rename it the same way the original stuffs are :/

Also, to OP: yes, you can. What I did was put the songs I want to play and rename them the way the original files are, just in case, but it works and I don't complain. I use Final fantasy Tactics' and it works well.

Renaming them is not necessary. All you need to do is but them in the appropriate folders. I have music from Castlevania, Legend of Zelda, Starcraft II, Mechwarrior III, Doctor Who, Lord of the Rings and many other sources and all tracks play with their original names.

Oh...

Well, I guess I did the unnecessary. But what about the title song? (The one playing at the main menu)

For the file sin the special folder you will have to rename, Due to how scripting calls for a file named "tes4title" "success" and "death" when they are needed.
I think you can also tweak the .ini, but renaming takes a lot less time :P
