Changing your character′s appearance

Post » Fri Apr 08, 2011 12:57 am

When I started to play Oblivion my dunmer was thin and had blue hair. But as I played on and got that house and raided all those dungeons and finished all those quests, I felt like he had become so experienced and even old so I decided to change his looks accordingly.
Obviously I′m on PC so I opened up the console and changed his hair all white and made him just a bit chubby. The length of his hair stayed long as it always has been.

In the sense of roleplay, has anyone else done the same?

I added the amount of aging I'd expect to get in the elapsed game time of one Nirn year (and a bit) - i.e. none whatsoever. However, I have considered adding a scar or two, or maybe an eye-patch!

Good topic!

I actually always wanted to change my character too, but I haven't figured out a good way yet (is the console the only way?).

My character is a Nord and looks about 25-29. After finishing all the main quests, side quests and factions, I too feel he has ''aged''. I'd like to make his black hair gray and add some wrinkles to him. Make him look about 15-20 years older at least.

I wish in the game you could age, like in ''real time'' lol. That would be incredible! Though obviously it would be good if they put a cap on the age so you don't keel over at 100.

I suppose a mod can be made to do that, if there isn't one already that is.

I haven't come across one. And I wouldn't even know where to start in regards to creating something like it either (still new to the world of modding :) ).

I don't really change the appearance of my character to account for age. She is an elf and age is not really a happening thing for them. We do use the console to change hairstyles to suit her whims though.

Caution to those considering using the 'showracemenu' which is the console command involved. Save your game before you do so just in case. Then open the command console and leave it open while you make your changes. Then, with the command console and race menu both still open, hit escape and save your game. Then with the command console and race menu both still open, load your new save. If you don't follow those instructions carefully, it is easy to have your skills reset (which is why you made the save before you touched the console).

UESP wiki also explains: http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Console_Command_Tutorial#ShowRaceMenu.2C_ShowBirthsignMenu.2C_and_ShowClassMenu

Yeah my dunmer is also elf but I wanted that old look to express all that he′d gone through :)

I've pretty much been playing the exact character every play through. My best face I made was my last one (pics in sig) and I had a backup of that character right out of the sewers. The downside was that I made that character with OOO's Living Economy installed. With my most recent character, I wanted to try and play with more vanilla settings again and found my character backup was gimped because I made it with OOO installed. Armorer hammers stayed at 61 drakes a piece. :( So I figured all I could do is make a new character and replicate the face. Well, my current character looks more like he's 40 instead of in his early 20's like before. So I just kind of RP'd it as if he has aged.

Of course, since then I've found out there is a copy and past feature for character faces using Wrye Bash. Foolish me, I already deleted my backup save by the time I learned this.

Another way to change the appearance of your character that is fairly easy - it just takes three four easy steps!

Step 1: Make sure you have the PC version.

Step 2: Create your character. When you are satisfied with the face and how it appears, do a full save - BEFORE EXITING THE SEWERS (or whatever chargen mod you're playing). Make sure you still have access to the CharGen Face Editor. Exit the game and rename the file to something useful, like, "*charcter_name*Master". This will be your master face file. DO NOT SAVE OVER IT.

Step 3: When you want to change your character's appearance, open the "master" file and edit the face to add age, change hair color, length, whatever. Save it under a new name.

Step 4: Download http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=7808. Load the "revised" face save and copy the face. Then just paste it onto your latest game save.

Step 4 takes like ten seconds. The key is making sure you save your game while you have access to the CharGen face generator. You can use the console, too, but I like to work on my face, then see how it looks in game, even while I'm changing it, without opening the console again and again. Also, I find I get better faces, but maybe that's just me.

Edit: My characters modify their appearance over time, depending on role play. One character, a prisoner upon arrival, had a rat's nest for hair and wore no make-up. By the time she had 100k in the bank, that rats nest was a finely tailored hairstyle and she sported eye-shadow and lip color. Since it's so easy to change hairstyles, I do that pretty often.

I don't think you can add scars without editing the face texture file. I have thought about broken noses, if I could figure out how to edit that in the Face Generator.

Anyone know of a similar utility that doesn't require .NET?

I never did such a thing, but I certainly have wanted to do it before. It would be really cool if something like that was added in the next ES game.

One of the things I really liked in Fable was the way the character could physically change during the game. Sure, it was ridiculous because it happened too fast, but the idea was neat.

My limited understanding of face exchange is that there are two ways. It seems this mod does not play with vista or seven so it is out for me.

The other route is Wrye Bash which is well beyond my limited OBMM ability to comprehend I'm sure.

I long for a simple omod or omod-ready mod that will work with no trouble on vista. :brokencomputer:

All my characters in Oblivion are set up in the beginning to reflect my age, which is younger forties.

When thinking back I′m satisfied with my choices regarding the changes to my character.

At the beginning he was young, inexperienced and somewhat naive. Now he knows his way around Cyrodiil, what fights to pick and what he wants to do in general. As an elf he does not age like a human, but I still think that white hair reflects very well his experience and the chubbyness is a reminder that even elf′s metabolism change when years go by

I've never done that, because I don't like playing characters that physically look significantly older than me. :D I just don't feel very connected to that amount of life experience or what-not. And all my characters are elves, who I think age so much significantly slower that in the time I've been playing them, they wouldn't have aged a day.

But I have changed my characters' hair multiple times! I never touch faces after the original FaceGen (there's no plastic surgery in Cyrodiil), but my characters visit the hair salon often. :P
