My char can't jump while casting spells suddenly

Post » Tue May 03, 2011 11:07 am

Suddenly my char can't jump while casting spells. The only mods I've added is Deadly Reflex 5 and High Imperials and I don't think any of them should affect it. I've also updated some others, but none should affect it as far as I know. Anyone who knows which mod that might cause it? Or what to check in TES4Edit?

Are you sure this wasn't always present? This has been present in my games for forever, and I've always attributed it to the woefully bad animation system (that being the game is incapable of blending the spellcasting and jumping animations together).

I'm almost certain that it hasn't been so - but perhaps I'm going crazy. My char is always running/jumping around so I immediately noticed it when loading a save - like after 10 seconds. At first I thought the jump key had been changed somehow - but then she could jump again if not casting. You might be correct - but then it's really odd that it haven't annoyed me before.

Just tried it in an unmodified install. You can cast spells in midair (i.e. jump then cast), but you can't initiate a jump while casting.

OK, I'm going crazy then. Thanks for confirming it. :)

Actually, that would explain a lot. Attempting to jump while casting is essentially attempting to interrupt a non-idle animation with a new one, and that is something the game simply cannot do. You see this all the time with all the "you cannot switch weapons while attacking" messages you see from time to time, where you are attempting to interrupt a combat swing animation with a weapon equip animation... the game can't do that. It is only possible to interrupt idle animations in this game, from what I've seen.

Why it works with jump, then cast is because you are not interrupting the jump animation; it has already played and repositioned your limbs, so now you are in a static pose (essentially, your character model is completely un-animated after the jump animation finishes). That is why this works, but not the previous combo.

It makes complete sense too, doesn't it? I mean, obviously spellcasting requires a fair degree of concentration, so the effort involved with coordinating a jump will be beyond you while you're casting a spell, but once you're in freefall off Dive Rock, there's no problem focusing your mind as the wind whistles past your ears and the ground rushes to meet you.

Right?

If your acrobatics skill is below 25 you cant cast a spell and then jump but you seem to be able to cast while in midair which I thought was restricted as well. I tried to jump while casting with a higher level character and it worked like a charm.

Oh geez, he's right. I completely forgot about that perk
