character appearence

Post » Tue Mar 08, 2011 9:00 pm

When checking out some of the new screen shots I noticed that some of the characters (I'm guessing 3rd person view of the player character) looked different, not just in terms of armor and face but body type and musculature. So I got to wondering if this is just an artifact of the camera angles or armor/equipment or if your characters appearance changes based on your stats or skills. Sort of like the fable series but a little less like a cartoon.

I haven't read anything about it, but lots of people claim you can edit your body, I think it's to take away from everyone having the same body as everyone else of there race.

No, it would be more than one character... they didn't just make one character and leave it at that.

If you've been reading every bit of Skyrim info you'd know you can change musculature and body appearance, along with the face.

Let's hope they don't go that route.

(Though it was kind of fun to let your muscular character in San Andreas stand still over night (real time) and end up really skinny.)

The different bodyshapes is welcome though.

Apparently I haven't, but I'd love to if you could spare a link to your source.

No fable aspects more than likely. I'm still under the impression everyone will be walking around with a six pack. The only reason the musculature has substantially improved in detail is because of artists are becoming more detailed with character models and the engine is able to render more detail.

I remember reading the posts from the actual game informer website and I don't remember them mentioning editing bodies *could just be a slip of memory*.

Also I'm not sure of the credibility of the website.

I'm not sure either, I couldn't find the original game informer post, but I know they said you could alter your physique and how visible your veins are, or something along those lines.

Now that just seems silly.

Not sure about the body builds and such but I have one comment on character appearances. Change Khajiit and Argonian back to looking more beastly and no human legs. They make me sad =(

I wonder how far the body editing goes. Immaturity aside, I mean what would you edit? Muscle tone maybe, but you'll usually be covered up by clothes and armor so whats the point in that? nipble size and color, bust size, finger nail length? Most things you could edit seem pointless unless you plan to play as a nudist.

Might be interesting if you can control the size of a khajiit and argonians tail or how big or jagged their claws are. Definitely hope argonians get more 'hair' choices, the 3 or 4 they had in oblivion was too few.

I haven't read anything into it, but I am pretty sure it isn't going to be sliders like Oblivion, it is going to be pre-made body types.

By that logic, you might as well say being able to edit your face is pointless since you'll just cover it with a helmet.

Besides, I don't your going to be changing those kind of details, probably what you're going to change is things like how muscular your character is, possibly body weight and how tall you are, and really, those are things that would likely be visible with clothes too, especially since, as you should be able to see from the trailer and images, Skyrim will feature some clothing and armor that shows skin, just look at what the player character wears in most images.

A good portion of your face is usually uncovered, so your face is worth editing. I didn't mean body editing is useless, just their aren't as many features on the body as there is on the face. And even if some armors leave some parts of you exposed, most of the body is still probably gonna be covered. Especially by the stronger armors (like deadric), which tend to completely cover you. Of course I guess you could enchant weaker armor if you like its look better. But we don't really know how many armors there will be or how most of them will look.

The races have had set weight and height for a few games, but I guess we might be able to edit them. It would also make all the NPC's better to look at. It's boring how they all looked pretty similar in oblivion, all the members of each race the same height, all the men having a six pack, all the women with the same size chest, no beer bellies. The more we can edit our own character the more differences there will be between NPC's.

I suspect that any "body" choices will be limited to something basic like "Pick body: Muscular or Slim"

The games I've played that gave more options for body proportions.... have tended to have simpler armor models (down to "just a texture on the body, plus a few bulky parts tacked on", like in City of Heroes).

But who knows... maybe the new engine will allow for variable deformation of the armor meshes over your body shape. But I doubt it.

It will probably be like Soul Caliber 4.
