[IDEA/WIP] Character Backgrounds

Post » Thu Jun 17, 2010 12:06 am

Well, I am not even 100% certain I am going to be able to pull this one off, and it is still very much in pre-development, but I wanted to toss the idea out here and see what people thought. This is something I have been fiddling with during my down times with Burial Rites, and it won't get a primary focus for me until I have finished off the base mod for BR.

Currently, the plan is as follows. I will be adding a few additional classes for play, for a total of 31 accessible classes. These are all very specifically selected classes from the original game, so they will fit in fine with Lore, and all will be things that seemed as though they should be reasonable for the player to select as a class. Based off the class you select, I am thinking before leaving the room with Ergalla (so as to make it compatible with most leveling mods) you would need to answer the Background questions.

Each character will have to answer a series of 12 Background Questions for their character, the answers they select will grant various things: items, skills, or reputation; some even give you a small disadvantage. The 12 questions that the player will need to answer will be selected from a listing of 34 questions. Two of the questions will be asked of every character, regardless of class, and the other 10 will be dependent on class selection. The questions selected will depend on the class that the player selected for their character (so different plays, assuming using a different class, will net different results). Each question will have at least 3 available answers for the player to select.

Once the questions have been answered, the appropriate adjustments will be applied to the character and you will also receive a book that would also contain all of the information based off of what you have selected (if this is possible).

So far, I have developed all 34 Questions, answers to all questions, and results for each answer. I am now going through and determining which classes should be allocated each of the questions.

I will clean up some of my notes later on today or tomorrow and add them to the OP here for people to take a look at.

Basically, I am curious as to what people think about this idea, and if anyone had any particular ideas of things that could be used for it (Questions/Answers/Effects). I know this will be easier once I have the notes posted, but feel free to start commenting now.

EDIT: As promised, here is the listing of classes and background questions (along with currently decided results for each answer available, classes asked each question are still not listed, save for the two asked to all characters - though I do have some of this decided already as well, most acutally). Note, there are no spoiler tags, as I am still not 100% committed to everything presented here, but if you do not want to know what is even being planned, then I would suggest not reading any further!

I like the sound of it. Any chance of having a peek of what the questions are (just put them in spoilers or something)? It would be much easier to give a better judgement, that's all.

Yep, as stated in the OP, I will get those up a little later today, I just need to clean up my notes I have been making on this one. And I actually have one question and answer/effect set undecided at this point, the second of the questions that will be asked to all Characters.

Anyways, I suppose I can get the basics up right now, though this won't currently have all the information that will be going into the OP later on tonight/early tomorrow, but I can toss out the list of intended to be available classes, and then the listing of the questions (sans results or what classes will be asked the questions). Many of them are similar to, if not the same as the ones in Daggerfall, though the effects have been heavily adjusted to compensate for some of the differences in the games, and others have just been omitted entirely. So here is all that:

Intended Classes:
Spoiler
Acrobat
Agent
Alchemist
Archer
Assassin
Barbarian
Bard
Battlemage
Commoner
Crusader
Enchanter
Enforcer
Healer
Hunter
Knight
Mage
Monk
Nightblade
Noble
Priest
Pilgrim
Rogue
Scout
Sharpshooter
Smuggler
Sorcerer
Spellsword
Thief
Trader
Warrior
Witchhunter

Background Questions (first two questions are asked to all classes):

This reminds me of Daggerfall's chargen system, which was pretty awesome (maybe even the greatest thing about that great game). I hope this comes through!

That, my friend, is exactly what the idea came from (and seeing some people mention wishing it had been in Morrowind). Many of the questions are, in fact, from the Daggerfall listing of questions. I have omitted some of them, adjusted others, and am reworking it to take account for some differences in the systems used in the games (different skills and such).

Anyways, the OP has a lot of the details added to it now, and I only have about 7 more classes to line up for questions before this would be able to move to some kind of production work on it (though I can not start that myself until I finish Burial Rites).

Really cool idea! I'd be sure to try this when it was released.
One question, are you planning on making this compatible with alternate beginning mods?

This is really cool but a lot of these are pretty redundant, and there are way too many positive effects and almost no negative ones.

This is because not every character is asked the same questions, they are asked different ones, some in a similar way to make them more fitting to what that class would be like. By the end of it, each character will have some skill bumps, some equipment, and some positive and negative effects added to them. I did it in this way to keep some degree of diversity, and to also try and keep things balanced in some way.

If you compare the chart I posted in the link on the OP to what the questions actually provide this will become evident.

Will this still work out for custom classes?

My intent is to try and make it so that it will by providing a default set of questions that will be asked to classes that I do not account for in this listing provided.

EDIT: Does anyone have any suggestions in regards to the prison question/answers/results? I am still having some issues deciding just what to utilize there, but considering how the game begins, I think it would be a good question to address (as well as make sure there are some options in there that can be bent to as many play styles as possible). Beyond this, if anyone has some suggestions in regards to specific changes they may want to see to the questions or answers/results, fire away.

EDIT 2: Also, I would be willing to take some suggestions in regards to classes that could be added to the listing. Further, I have updated the sheet linked in the OP to include the Default listing of questions, as well as two classes listed beyond that which I will be making in a separate version of this mod (the classes listed are for a friend and for my girlfriend) and six spots listed as open for other classes that people would like to request be added to this project. I will actually release both versions, to give people a choice of what style they want (as the expanded version will have some non-lore friendly classes as seen).

Because I mostly play magickwielding chars, an obvious anserw for me is: Offering unsanctioned training in magickal practices, outside of the Guild of Mages.
I'll think of more anserws later :)

Here's a few for the prison question, most are vague -- up to interpretation of the player, by the choices of the other questions perhaps:

A ) thievery (sneak, security, acrobatics)
B ) smuggling & embezzlement (mercantile, speechcraft, enchant)
C ) reckless magic (destruction, alteration, unarmored)
D ) witchcraft (alchemy, restoration, conjuring)
E ) assault & propery destruction (blunt weapon, long blade, axe)
F ) murder (short blade, illusion, marksman)
G ) heresy (mysticism, athletics, hand to hand)

Hope this helps ^_^

i do like the concept, though there would be a lot to change to get the daggerfall questions to work well in morrowind. kinda like the questions for choosing your class even.

one thing to mention though is that any "knowledge" answers should give an increase in intelligence, or max. magicka bonus along with a book. or at least make sure it's a skill book instead.

i like q's jail answers, though i'd add one more...treason. though i don't know what that would entail, perhaps added reputation due to the magnitude?

Quorn's ideas gave me inspirations for some reputation based rewards and (mostly) disadvantages.

Thievery +Rep for Thieves Guild
Reckless magic -Rep for Mages Guild
Witchcraft -Rep for Mages Guild
Murder maybe +Rep at the Morag Tong?
Heresy -Rep Imperial Cult

that's a good idea, thievery and smuggling should lower rep with imperial legion, witchcraft lowers it with tribunal and imperial cult, heresy lowers it with tribunal and redoran. i would say assault should increase it with camonna tong which would be pretty funny.

I would not add too many +/- Rep to Morrowind factions, because the crime was commited in Cyrodiil, but all-in all I like them :P

Because I mostly play magickwielding chars, an obvious answer for me is: Offering unsanctioned training in magickal practices, outside of the Guild of Mages.
I'll think of more answers later :)

That certainly doesn't seem like too bad of an idea at all to me.

Here's a few for the prison question, most are vague -- up to interpretation of the player, by the choices of the other questions perhaps:

A ) thievery (sneak, security, acrobatics)
B ) smuggling & embezzlement (mercantile, speechcraft, enchant)
C ) reckless magic (destruction, alteration, unarmored)
D ) witchcraft (alchemy, restoration, conjuring)
E ) assault & propery destruction (blunt weapon, long blade, axe)
F ) murder (short blade, illusion, marksman)
G ) heresy (mysticism, athletics, hand to hand)

Hope this helps ^_^

Those look like some really good questions for the prison question, and the results aren't bad options either. I think I will be doing some work with these a little bit later on, though I think today will be mostly reserved for Burial Rites so I can actually get around to this mod. Thanks a million for the suggestions!

i do like the concept, though there would be a lot to change to get the daggerfall questions to work well in morrowind. kinda like the questions for choosing your class even.

one thing to mention though is that any "knowledge" answers should give an increase in intelligence, or max. magicka bonus along with a book. or at least make sure it's a skill book instead.

i like q's jail answers, though i'd add one more...treason. though i don't know what that would entail, perhaps added reputation due to the magnitude?

You are correct, I have had to make adjustments to basically every single question used in order to compensate for differences from Daggerfall to Morrowind, but I don't find this to be too much of a problem overall. Did you maybe have some suggestions for specific questions and answers that might be good to use?

Quorn's ideas gave me inspirations for some reputation based rewards and (mostly) disadvantages.

Thievery +Rep for Thieves Guild
Reckless magic -Rep for Mages Guild
Witchcraft -Rep for Mages Guild
Murder maybe +Rep at the Morag Tong?
Heresy -Rep Imperial Cult

Those all seem like a decent idea overall, and I could certainly see the prison question actually netting the most change overall to the character (both good and bad), so I will certainly consider those reputation adjustments.

Much in line with what I mentioned above, I do think that is probably one of the best ideas to do with the prison question, as I think it should probably net the most consistent change in the character.

I would not add too many +/- Rep to Morrowind factions, because the crime was commited in Cyrodiil, but all-in all I like them :P

That was my goal, I think at the moment the player can only end up with a -1 to one of the Great Houses for Morrowind specific factions. Most others relate to type of Religion (which can cause a hit/increase to the Tribunal Temple), and most other ones relate to the Imperial Guilds you can join (Fighter's, Mage's, Theive's). But I do agree that reps for factions typically only seen in Morrowind should not be touched often with this.

Good luck with the project! I've worked on a similar project awhile back, which is where those answers came from, but never really progressed past the concept stage, probably from all of the other similar plug-ins.

There was one other crime I forgot to list, vagrancy, which was the 'op-out' answer which didn't have any positive or negative feedback, incase the player didn't want to associate with the other crimes.

And really, judging by your other projects, I am not surprised you never got around to this one (and I am more than fine with that by all the quality work you've put out to the community). Hopefully I will be able to get it crafted and out :)
