Character Build - S.P.E.C.I.A.L. Start Stats

Post » Sat Nov 28, 2015 2:54 am

So another thread got me thinking about this, and actually I had started planning this anyway. I was curious how people might be planning their initial character build. Using the info from the E3 video as a guide as to what each thing effects, how will you do your first build character?

Strength- Affects your raw physical power, carry weight and melee damage

Perception- Environmental awareness, affects accuracy in V.A.T.S.

Endurance- Affects Health and Action Points and AP drain from sprinting

Charisma- Affects persuasion and barter prices

Intelligence- Mental acuity and experience points earned

Agility- Number of Action Points in V.A.T.S. and your finesse and reflexes

Luck- Affects your recharge rate of critical hits and helps find better items in game

Mine might be:

S=3

P=5

E=2

C=1

I=6

A=5

L=5

Keep in mind you only get 21 points to distribute and all start at 1. I might sacrifice a point out of "P" to put another in "L". I want a smart, agile and sneaky guy that has some pretty good luck.

Anyone else wanna post up how they might do the first build?

Normally Agility would be a point lower (to be placed in endurance) but the Slayer perk (which is Vital to be able to defeat Deathclaws and heavily Armored opponents) required 7 in the past Fallout and I'm going to assume you can't raise a stat more than 4 points so I'll stick to 3.
Generally I want a brute force slasher that uses the environment to her (yup. Female) advantage and starts putting points in sneak midgame to get the Ninja perk.
Though the new kill animations might make me go with stealth right away.

It depends on how the system works, to be honest. My initial gut choice would be something like:

S: 1
P: 1
E: 7
C: 1
I: 10
A: 1
L: 7

I always prefer to play intelligent characters, but if it turns out intelligence is a pointless or weak stat I'll probably drop points from it for charisma.

I'll get the guide and check how they work exactly and if you can increase them later, etc

Evenly distribute the points for that first character. Then learn the new system. I hardly think setting Intelligence, or any other SPECIAL stat, right to 10 on character creation will be the obvious thing to do this time around.

I usually like to focus on guns/energy weapons so my SPECIAL stats lean towards being able to hit the target in VATS accurately, often, and with a good rate of criticals too. Normally in a Fallout game I would have INT at 9, but since it affects the rate of XP gain in FO4 instead of skillpoints per level, I don't really see the importance of the stat that much. Usually I have CHR as one of the lower stats but, since skills are supposedly not returning, I think a decent CHR will be needed to pass speech checks.

Standard survival build. Awareness and reactivity are the most important things for exploration.

S - 2 - I suspect I can fast travel to dump collected crap, and I usually don't like playing melee characters.

P - 8 - I like to see stuff

E - 2 - I'm usually in perpetual sneak, so, running and endurance aren't big on my list

C - 3 - Eh. So stuff will be expensive.

I - 3 - Seems to apply mostly to XP gain in FO4, so, I won't be leveling up too quick.

A - 8 - I'm usually in perpetual sneak, so, yay Agility for sneaky sneaky.

L - 2 - The crit system looks fun, but, recharge times will be slow with low luck. Ah well.

I'm usually playing a very slow, methodical, perpetually sneaking character that prefers long range.

I sneak. I like to see stuff far away. A 10 minute dungeon for most peeps is a 45 minute crawl of investigating every corner for me.

S=6 - Gotta carry all that loot somehow.

P=1 - dump stat. I'll spot stuff for myself and also don't vats.

E=9 - Same plan as L.

C=1 - Dump stat.

I=1 -Without skill points, dump stat. I can level at a slower rate just fine.

A=1 -Dump stat for me. I don't vats.

L=9 - Going for bobblehead/implant to get it to 10 asap and assuming 10 is max.

Of course this may be a moot point if perks can boost stats over 10 or are plentiful enough to bump special up often enough.

Thanks for playing. It is cool to see how people might do a build. I might change mine depending on any new info we get over the next few months. I am curious as to how bobbleheads, books and magazines might work since we saw all three in the trailer. I am also thinking we might get Intense Training perk again to build stats.

Like a lot of you, I prefer a stealthy PC and sneak most everywhere. I also use VATS a lot as I am not a very good player with FPS style games unless I get to do long distance sniping of my target. I am super excited about gun mods, and what that can mean for a sniper style player. My PC will have a well defended house with LOTS of weaponry inside!

Seems like we'll be pretty screwed if we don't specialize so maybe something like

S - 2 (I'll need intense training really bad)

P - 6 (What use is anything else if you're blind am i right)

E - 2 (useful, but not as much as other stats)

C - 1 (meh)

I - 5 (always useful)

A - 8 (I like me some agility)

L - 4 (again, always useful)

Build not final though.

i'll do about this:

strength - 3

perception - 5

endurance - 3

charisma - 2

intelligence - 5

agility - 5

luck - 5

it's a stealth character basis, hence high perception and agility for obvious reasons

high intelligence for quicker learning, better repair, science and lockpicking from start etc

a little something to endurcance so i can carry some stuff and take a couple blows (and sprint, hopefully :-)

strength and charisma aren't really needed that bad on first couple levels, and they level quick anyway), so they're left blank

luck, honestly can't tell if this actually does _anything_, but with 1 strength, you never know... :-) (and it never really levels)

(edit: modified values for strength and endurance, had gotten that wrong which governs carry weight)

uh isn't that endurance rather?

if it's actually strength, i'd have to modify my own setup :-)

According to the video from E3 where we see character creation, Strength affects carry weight and melee damage. Endurance affects health and action points, not how much you can carry.

I just don't want to neglect any particular skill too much for a first character.
I want to give him some more Intelligence and Endurance though, both things I think are essential to survive in the wasteland.
And to get those two up, I'll sacrifice some charisma, poor guy probably doesn't know much about wastelander customs, and Charisma options can often also be resolved by working around it.

Can you reduce the points and place them in different stat or is it permanent the moment you distributed the points to SPECIAL?
