Character Creation and Clothing

Post » Sun Mar 29, 2009 3:28 am

I just wanted to offer my humble opinion on something near and dear to my heart.

Freedom of expression

In an MMO players are very close to their characters. In fact, they are their characters. I want to see a near unlimited amount of choice for the characters in V13. F3 did good in allowing a multitude of choices, but I also would like to choose height, weight, body type, etc.

My favorite thing in game is making my character look good. Fable 2 did this well in allowing players to mix and match clothing pieces and "dye" them different colors.

Furthermore, I think people would love to choose tattoos, scars, t-shirts etc.

gamesas brought a lot of freedom into RPG's with F1 and F2. Lets continue that gamesas tradition in V13 with freedom of choice.

I would like to see clothing actually serve a purpose, rather than as a personal appearance novelty act.

If you wear gang colors, people treat you like a member of the gang (so an opposing gang might take offense)

If you dress like a merchant, people treat you like a merchant. If you dress like a beggar, people treat you like a beggar.

Of course, if you don't wear disguises, then your character gains reputation faster.

Ultima Online was fun in that respect. There was a ridiculous amount clothing that could be dyed by the player. I had a theif character in that game that ran around in a green hat with a feather in it, some blue booties, a purple cape, and a neon yellow apron, cotherwise completely naked. I spent most of my time insulting people and goading them into attacking me and then thunking them a few times a heavy x-bow. Good times.

On the other hand, at some point when I wasn't looking "character creation" changed from customizing the way your character would interact with the world to customizing your characters face. Not a change for the better in my opinion. Do most people really love those face shaper mini games? I get frustrated that I can't make my character look even remotely human, and skip past that part with a default face. On the other hand I can stare at the Fallout character sheet for a good half hour thinking up concepts for characters without getting bored. 15 skills > 15,000 variants on the shape of my characters chin, maybe I'm in the minority on that one though.

I gotta say that the *Face* of your toon in a mmo is more or less one of the forefront connections people have with their toons and avatars so please bear this in mind, also please remember to offer a *hide* helm ability. it's really so that people can look at something that's usually custom, and not a helmet thats generic. :)

One thing that differientates people's avatar from other people, is the modificable clothes. Real options, like the option of doing your tatoos (don't even mention the game!).

Heck with that, I want a Beatles-themed Sgt. Pepper's clothes!

Here's hoping for a Beatles-themed quest on V13.

Speaking of Character Creation: I'm hoping that we will see traits and perks be apart of V13. F1, F2, and fallout tactics all had the option to pick unique traits for the character during creation: Bruiser, Small Frame,Gifted, Bloody Mess, Good Natured, One Handed, Finesse, ect., ect.... These traits played a major role in choosing a style of game play.

The Other Fallout titles that did not keep this feature ended up rolling traits and perks together doling them out every 3 levels... Personally I feel kinda cheated by this approach because traits are subtley different than perks. Traits are balanced, It gives you something good with a penalty. Your a little bigger but a little slower and your character model would be bigger(bruiser), your more agile but can't carry as much with a smaller character model(small frame), Bloody Mess could even be a parental control feature (certain accounts could have this option blocked out, would either reduce or increase the ammount of gore rendered).

Perhaps characters with extreme traits would have visually different character models- Strength>7= Body builder Physique, Strength<4= skinny physique, Intelligence>8=giant head, or something.

I just want the face to be a little customizable, just so not everyone look exactly the same. But the thing I really would like is more bodytypes.... Damn everyone in Fallout 3 have like the exact same bodytype... not ONE fatass bastard >,< (old fallout atleast got some larger people Gizmo, Vic etc) I just want it connected to perks, like hmm the

"Blubber perk - Your days of eating unhealthy has finally paid off, your extra layers of fat protects you a little bit more from damage."

And with that perk your character gets fat :/ downside is that he maybe gets - 2 in action points like the bruiser perk, or he gets just a little bit slower.

And clothing should give something in return, like +3 barter if you have really goodlooking clothes on you... Becouse if not only roleplayers will wear them... Image

I think clothing should have their own equip slots and thats my opinion on that matter.
Character Creation is a must. Because I want my Fatass, Baldheaded, Beard Wearing and Buttocks Kicking Bounty hunter. And please do a proper beard for this game, in every other MMO that I have played the beards have allways disappointed me. "With a nice iron pipe you can strike the world with amazement."

i just want animation to be ok that the characters dont look like retards.
Oh and power armour. I also think coloured armour would be lame. I don't want to see people in pink and neon yellow leather jackets running about everywhere. It wouldn't match the background.

Thats accually not a bad idea. Of course there are somethings that should change your character for ever. like becoming a slaver. getting that awsome tatoo right in the middle of your forehead. Once a slaver always a slaver. Image

- Ability to choose a race between human, Super mutant or ghoul...maybe at some point of the game you can join the mutants as a human and they throw you in some xxx vats...and you mutate into a mutant ?? (my personal pick a super mutant that wields a minigun in one hand or browning M2...hmmm)
- As you enter age your character looks older
- Fat, slim or athletic body...(somebody wrote that good idea) maybe also depending on what you enter in your SPECIAL, like more strength or endurance the character has more muscles (for human race only)
- Hair and facial Hair...like beards...normal color selection (for human race only)
- someone mentioned tattoos...I agree

- Leather jacket and metal armor for mutants...
- Ammo belts that let you carry more ammo and are visible when equipped...3 belts in total on character..each different model like magazine or heavy ammo or shotgun belt
- when wearing glasses or a pack of smokes it appear on a character...smokes a cigar
- Weapons in the main and off hand are visible on the character
- Removable helmet on Power armor...something like FO1 look...
- Backpack that is visible when equipped on players back granting 50 lbs. also minigun and other heavy weapons have their own backpack, and you can't wear both in the same time...some sacks and bags or doctors bags from Fallout 1 that you can carry in your left hand, granting you from 10 or 15 lbs or similar...like in Fallout Tactics medical bag grants the ability to use Doctor skill or make it passive granting you +25% Doctor....as for the right hand it remain free for single handed weapons....

- a lot of different clothing like merchant or doctor or raider or any...maybe that armor sets are divided into part..like legs..head..etc...maybe ??? me personally I don't like that...ruins the total appearance of the armor...although i loved that picture from Fallout 2 where a nomad with no armor is wearing a broken power armor helmet...

- Dye armor (something similar to Warhammer 40 000 Down of War 2)... here the point isn't if you hate that some players dyed them yellow or something...the point is to attract more players...me personally I love black and I was forced to pass Fallout 2 in combat leather jacket...all the followers had same armor as me...the only heavy resistance was Navaro and Enclave...those plasma rifles and turrets uhhh...
in my opinion the point that someone doesn't like some pink player with a small pink bag (I hate that)is curable by lead poisoning...sharing the lead from your shotgun with him...
- I don't know is this should be in dye option or it appears from the hazardous environment in the game:
+ dirty look...smoked...muddy...dusty...bloody
+ armors rusty..damaged...cracked...
+ scars or bruises on the face or body...maybe broken limbs are visible...
this is fallout not some John Wayne movie where everyone runs around all clean and in well dressed outfits...more like the good the bad and the ugly movie..... Its better to live 3 days as a Lion, then spend the rest of your life as a hyena!
