Character creation, like it or hate it?

I wonder how long it's going to be with this 3D capture tech taking off before we have the option to inject our own ugly faces into the games?

I like it, even though coming up with a name is frustrating, especially when it's an MMO and you need to attempt different names like 4 or 5 times.

But in general I enjoy character creation.

I look at it this way, once you've created a character, it's almost impossible to go back to pre-set characters. For me, it adds immersion and depth to a game. I've even played shooters (Besides Reach & Borederlands) where my character was customisable, and it does make the experience bit more intimate, where I can can go and say "This is my character, playing by my rules" instead of being shoehorned into "xXxSuperSoldierxElitexSniperxAssassinxXx" But Sam Fisher is my one exception to this, only since I can customize the loadout, plus, it's Sam Fisher we're talking about.

If there is one thing Destiny has going for it. It's the character customization, those characters be sixy! Even though my lust to make millions of sixy characters means I only played 5 hours of actual game-play the rest is making characters.

Since I only like first person open world games, character creation is a must. I need to identify with my character, and I can't do that with a set character or a limited choice. Since I play first person, I can make do with just race and class if the choice is wide. I don't spend any time on the look of my characters, and all of them are named bubba. I don't like games with cut scenes, so the appearance of "me" doesn't matter.

That's my take, too :)

I enjoy exploring the options in the character creator. Unfortunately for me, I find only a handful of "looks" that appeal to me and rarely have a lot of differences between my characters, race and six not being included. I play 3rd person camera view, so I want my character to be pleasing to look at :)

I have seen some of the characters some players have created for, say Skyrim, and wonder if they actually played them, or was fooling around. We even had a thread or two for "Ugly Characters." Also in Skyrim, my Nords, Bretons, and Imperials tend to look very similar. When one has maybe 10 hairstyles, 10 eye colors, 10 noses, 10 mouths, 10 warpaints, 10 scars, and a slider that may make slight differences, there is not a lot of variety.

I know many players enjoy making quite "different" looking characters and role playing them, but I guess I'm too conservative for that. I create characters that I would like to be :)

That is an EXCELLENT point! :D

Yes, naming can be difficult. I want to stay within "lore", but that is difficult the first time through without extensive research. Setting has a lot to do with this. Human cultures? Easy names. Alien cultures? Difficult for me :)

I like it when you can actually do things with it. Like Sims 3 or the new Fallouts, you have a great degree of freedom and elasticity.

WIth other games like Dragon Age and Skyrim, you're sort of told to mildly alter a face they've provided, which never really produces unique characters. Racemenu mod for SKyrim is excellent for rectifying that, giving you all of the freedom whilst staying sharp and without going back to the doughy faces of Oblivion.

I love character creation. Especially in games where you can take them online like Dark Souls and go beat someone's butt as a cross dressing Minotaur with luminescent skin and two ladles.

That was probably one of the more limiting character creation tools I've seen in awhile to be honest. Absolutely no real original characters can be made. There are like 8-10 head types for each race. No customization can be done to the facial features other than some war paint/tattoo markings and hair. You can't even give humans beards. <_<

Fun game though. Char creation tools just are pretty lame imo.

well to be fair you really never see their face that much to begin with, and even if you do its at a distance.

besides, my hunters helmets normally look more interesting than their faces anyway.

I wasn't expecting much in the way of options, but I was still fairly disappointed in how limited it was.

True, but the same is true for tons of games that have character creation. Destiny does have a decent amount of armor options at least, which is pretty cool, even if most are pretty same-y in aesthetic terms.

It isn't really the focus of the game though, so I don't judge it as a game based on its character creation. But in the context of this thread? The Char Gen svcks lol.
