Character heights

Post » Mon Apr 25, 2011 1:46 pm

One of the things that makes oblivion feel less natural and more computer-generated is that all the characters of the same race have the same exact height.

I hope we can change our character height this time around. I want my Altmer to be really tall and my Nords to be kinda stout.

I was wondering how long it would take for someone else to mention this. I agree completely. I don't like it when people are taller than my character. Don't know why.

On the PC height could be changed via console, using the setScale command, that said, PLEASE GIVE US A HEIGHT SLIDER.... *ahem*. Yes, I'd rather have a natural height that keep things within realistically designed limits.

I would like very much settable heights and weights through a slider... But i wonder how tecnically the armours will fit these different shape bodies...

I think it is not a easy task for the dev team, but i hope they can handle with that! :brokencomputer:

That depends on your interpretation.

I know some people who are genuinely in the upper end of 7ft tall. So I would say make the limit 8ft - 9ft, 10 would be overkill.

You're kidding right? Characters have different heights depending on their gender and race.

wood elfs were always smaller then everyone else i found. but everyone else was the same hieght. and my charecture always came out small aswell, i think complection changes that. it would be nice to have the ability to change the hieght and width of the character though

Well we haven't seen Creation Kit yet, but from how these things usually go, they would usually just bind it to the "skeleton" and adjust a series of points in relation to that skeleton, else wise they'd have to create up to 20 different versions of each armor alone which is actually far more work when you consider the amounts of armor... tho I am sure they mentioned something about Racial armor... still it shouldn't be THAT hard, compared to doing things like... scorching the ground (which they claim is in the game) or having an in-depth economic system in the game (again which they claim is in the game). It's not simple to think about in 5 minutes, but it's not that relatively difficult.

Apparently, we'll be able to adjust the height of your character (probably within a race's natural variation), and body type. Unless new information came out recently that says different.

They weren't all the same height... I remember Bosmer being a head smaller than everyone and Nords a head taller than everyone. I think Dunmer and Altmer were slightly taller than Imperials.

I think it went (Shortest to Tallest): Bosmer, Argonian, Khajiit, Imperial, Dunmer, Altmer, Nords.

Khajiit, Argonians and Imperials were all about the same.

I hope heights are now randomized with each race having a average height. Maybe the average of 6'5" for Nords, 5'3" for Bosmer. 6' for Dunmer and Altmer, 5'7 for Imperials, Khajiits and Argonians. each could have a 4" + or -

You're joking right? 9ft tall characters? Thats insane.

I don't mind a little customization with height, but they should definitely keep it within the range for the race you're playing. Not let you become a Goliath just because you feel like it.

Yep, but aren't Altmer the tallest race in TES? They should be getting towards 7 ft.

The issue is that my characters need to be taller or shorter based on how tall I WANT them to be, within their own race. Within a single race, all members are the same height in Oblivion.

firstly ALL characters weren't the same size... but i do agree that All characters of a certain race WERE the same size... it made no sense that my warrior Breton was the same size as the mage who spent the day crouched over books.... ADJUSTABLE HEIGHTS PLEASE....

I'd make my Khajiit as tall as she can be. This needs to be added imo.

The Age of Connan′s Character Creation System is pretty good at this aspect... They have a triangular slider to you to chose between fat, thin and muscular, and also a height slider...

Put it in Skyrim and i′m more than happy! :twirl:

Well I'm not going to ask for 8.5ft, since that would seem like an invitation to round it down to 8ft.

All I'm really asking for is that if I want my character to be tall as in tall tall, then I can do that, but not to an extreme. 8ft might be enough to allow for a bit of give or take. I said 9ft more to give the extra decimals for if you think your character needs to be just that tiny bit taller. Don't mistake a requested maximum for what I personally would choose, I picked 9ft because I'd kick myself if I found that I wanted my character to be 8.1ft but the maximum wouldn't let me have that extra 1 inch of height.

Also, personally, I think there should be a blanket maximum of 8ft or 9ft, as in, if your character's race is already about 7.8ft on average, that should not entitle you to make a hill giant. Each race should then have their own maximums. My recommendations:

Bosmer: 5.5 Seeing as that would already leave them nearly the same height as some Imperials.

Argonians/Khajiit, Imperials, Bretons, Redguards and Dunmer: 7ft

Orcs and Nords and Altmer: Somewhere between or including 7ft and 8ft

Supposed new race: Whatever the heck most appeals to you, Bethesda.

You could also argue that everyone but Bosmer should have a common maximum, but I somehow doubt that decision would be well-received.

I think a common minimum of 4ft would be acceptable, unless we want Bosmer to be able to go as short as 2ft (about the same distance as the longest side of a rectangular pillow).

The reasons that I'm grouping most races together are:

1. They were roughly the same height as each other in Oblivion, and so it would make sense for them to be able to share a maximum height.

2. It would be unfair to tell players that they get an extra 0.1 between certain races.

Guys, the altmer are the tallest of the races! And for good reason too, for they believe bigger height = more godly.

There have been rumours flying around certain places, that there will be a new playable race. I'm not sure that it is true, that's why it's "supposed new race". I just figured I'd address it for those who wish to believe that it exists.

Anyway. I'll amend that list...

I want to choose height of my character. And I want that everyone starts skinny, and by eating you can get fat. And by raising your endurance and strenght, you get more muscular and bigger.

I'm pretty sure that 10 races are confirmed and I don't see them taking any race out anytime soon.

Two problems with this:

1. Your endurance and strength eventually stop increasing; your appetite does not.

2. How muscular are we talking exactly? :yucky:

I think that the dude int he background should be, say, strength level 40 or so out of 50.
