Think I saw someone named "Aenal Butt'Pluhg" or something similar... I really don't care what people name themselves. As a general rule, people who name themselves authentically RP more, people who use Random Generators don't care about the RP element at all and just wanna play (and usually are pretty good players), people who use famous names (like REALLY famous names) generally are ok players, people who have names from fiction (but not REALLY famous ones) are generally pretty good, and people who have absolutely horrendous names play to about 1/3 of the way into game, stop, make new toons, etc etc, so you never see them at end-game because they never took it seriously enough to begin with...
Just my personal experience with previous MMO's, and why I could care less about names... one of the best rogues on Test Server in EQ, his name was Jarlaxl Baenre (and thanks to the mask of the deceiver or whatever it was called, was a bald dark elf all the time...) did anyone care? Nope... in fact, he got a lot of props because of his name... these same people complained about seeing "Drizzt" everywhere. It's all subjective, and your ability to play the game makes a huge difference on if people complain about your name or not.
in both of those instances, I'd hit report so fast it would probably break my keyboard.
Argonian healer templar Oba-Ma-Care. Sounds like cheap heals and Cyrodiilic as well.
Drizzt, Legolas... Probably a heap of Harry Potter references too.
I'm not fussed, doesn't matter to me if they are lore friendly of not. The people I will be playing with, yeah they will have lore friendly names so meh...
Would I report a name? Only if it was offensive.
This too is common knowledge, the speed limit signs show an the approximate speed the majority of the other people are traveling in.
Nothing happens if you travel faster unless you run into an speed trap, police car or cause an accident.
Yes and posting an youtube video of you traveling in 300km/h might give you trouble.
The same way, moderators will probably ignore other reporting an name, however if you draws to much atention with you Legolas character you might get to change it.
I think the equation is
Behavior of the Player (Popularity (People's Care Level + Offensiveness) - Playskill of the Character) = X
If X > 1 then someone will report; if X > 10 more will report, and so on... a popular name is somewhat like a title... if you want to name your toon Drizzt, fine, people might be a little miffed... but if at 50th lvl, you have a dual wielding scimitar of death build that out DPS's everyone around you... then awesome! Drizzt it is! If at 50, you are found lying on your back a lot, and people need to Rezz you constantly... then you will probably get reported... if that same guy is a complete asshat, then people will DEFINITELY report them... if the guy in the first example (who is AWESOME at the game) is a complete asshat, more often than not it will be overlooked... because they are absolutely awesome at the game....
yeah me too, other than that if I see someone who calls himself 'Peanutbutter Sandwich' or even 'Brad Pitt' I dont really care, I would probably laugh a bit on the inside and be on my way
How close to the ropes is "Tig'ol Bitties" then?
i think it only applies if the name is copyrighted
yeah, but lets say the character Raven from tekken has a copyright or Snake from Metal Gear Solid....It still is only a name for a bird and reptile technically speaking, and they cant really have a copyright on that I dare say ^^
yeah well it has spooked me so i wont be using the morrowind name i had intended
EDIT: this also goes for how i was treated on this forum since as far back as 2001
So .. a name like "Fetcher N'Wah" would be out? Or does it have to be offensive in the real world? (not that I would recreate that character, he already had his run in Morrowind a long time ago, how he liked that everyone seemed to know his name XD .. )
i don't think names like that can usually be copyrighted
Depends on how much raging hatred for Tigole is out there.
Not true, even as someone that doesn't like copyright laws myself, I can say without a doubt that what gets copyrighted is not a name or term, but the person. Snake is not copyrighted, "Solid Snake" is what's copyrighted, and the same being true with "Raven" from Tekken. Caius is another example, the name itself is not copyrighted but "Commander Caius" is and Zenimax sure as hell has no leg to stand on forcing a namechange upon or banning a person whose name is "Caius", only if it's 'Commander Caius'. (Snake, Raven, & Caius are all historically legitimate names, by the way.)
For all the problems related to copyright law, this is not one of them.
No they don't have to allow it. Obfuscating a name simply in order to use it is covered in the naming policy.
Characters tend to get trademarked, not copyrighted.
Naming policy is usually a touchy subject because people like stupid names and others like to be as offensive as possible, and some just aren't original, whereas others have used the same names throughout gaming history before policies such as this came about.
Sometimes there's legitimate reasons, sometimes people are just stupid.
I say if it's not blocked by the filter by default, go for it. if you get reported, it's on you, and I'd recommend one thinks before naming themselves something ridiculous.
Mate you would be surprised , if it is was not , maybe with time it stopped being.
Hell "Super Hero" is under copyright.
The other day they were trying to get "Saga" , yeap one word used all the time ,under copyright.
In the end , just stop and check , you would be surprised.
So if you'd name your character Stan it would not be ok because that is a name used in southpark?
Heh, yeah just recently those Candy Crush scumbags had the nerve to try to copyright the word http://jezebel.com/candy-crush-makers-sadly-realize-they-cant-copyright-t-1531396825
I remember the time Bethesda tried to sue Notch for that "Scrolls" TCG game. Fun stuff.
Stan would be fine. Stan Marsh would be reported.
Eric is fine. Eric Cartman is not.
