[Information] Character Name Rules

Post » Sun Mar 30, 2014 8:08 am

For instance, you make a Nord, uses 2 handers, really strong (in TES games, so no magic) you find yourself wearing furs mostly... and at some point put on the "one fur armor" that has no top graphic, and ends up making your Nordic Greatsword guy look EXACTLY like Conan... Yeah, I know, we pick names FIRST... but I wonder how many people out there played Skyrim all the way through while being named, "Prisoner"?

You mean you can change the name?

As long as he pulls his weight, I don't care if he names his character Bruce Lee, Chuck Norris, Nuck Chorris, Kung Lao, or anything...

Nope, no H.H. Holmes... but probably John Holmes is ok lol

They'd fall under "5", popular characters in the public domain.

I would assume Cassiopeia would be fine... This seems to be driven by reporting (as opposed to the in-game profanity filter). No one sane is going to report a gorgeous name like Cassiopeia because it happens to have "ass" in it.

The "Don't use names of characters from this IP" is pretty Standard Operating Procedure for MMOs actually. SWTOR, WoW and IIRC LotRO all banned peeps from naming smugglers Han Solo or Thral the Shaman and whatnot. This is #8 on SWTOR's naming policy:

8. You may not use proper names of non-player characters within Star Wars: The Old Republic, e.g. Darth Malgus, Satele Shan, Yoda, Darth Vader or Luke Skywalker.

I was blocked from using the name Cassiopeia, but I'm hoping they will lax what they include as offensive language or names that contain minor "offensive language."

I know it was blocked because I got a different message than I would get from having an already taken name. Plus, I used many surnames that seemed highly unlikely that people would use had they chosen Cassiopeia as a first name.

The rest are really standard in most MMOs too, it's just that most players don't report names unless they're really obviously bannable like "FartBurglar" or something.

Mate i always create chars copying names from fiction universe that many know , reason people call out from time to time in game.

NEVER , in any MMO i ever played , any of the names i created were deleted.

Granted , i ofc do not use real names from actors and the like , only fictional chars , from like star wars , final fantasy ...

NEVER got anything punished.

I find it stupid to put rules in specific names, while THEY COULD just disable them

Cassiopeia is a country title and its greek, it comes from Kasioph in greek mythology, that is also a star system. Its a property of all greeks.

Here it is, greek version of wiki translated via google translate http://translate.google.gr/translate?sl=el&tl=en&js=n&prev=_t&hl=el&ie=UTF-8&u=http%3A%2F%2Fel.wikipedia.org%2Fwiki%2F%25CE%259A%25CE%25B1%25CF%2583%25CF%2583%25CE%25B9%25CF%258C%25CF%2580%25CE%25B7_%2528%25CE%25BC%25CF%2585%25CE%25B8%25CE%25BF%25CE%25BB%25CE%25BF%25CE%25B3%25CE%25AF%25CE%25B1%2529

but the google translator really s#$#s its bad... It says she was the daughter of arabs arabs.. lol..... the real translation is : she was the daughter of Arabiu- Arabios

Like I said, nobody reports a name unless you name a character something that is clearly meant to be offensive, and mods generally don't monitor character names unless they get a report. But the rules are there. Heck, these aren't even the most restrictive ones I've seen, here are a few more gem's from SWTOR's naming rules:

9. You may not use names containing titles or ranks within them, e.g. General Supertrooper, Captain Tim, Darth Timmy, Knight Wakey.

13. You may not use gibberish names when creating character, e.g. ajsdu, rifndsw, qweszs. (this one is probably more to combat bots)

11. You may not use names that contain an inappropriate phrase, sentence or any fragment of a sentence or Leet speak, e.g. uberhaxer, xxspeederxx, lolface, rofl, Noobwhacker, TimmyF**k, kock, fuk. (they literally banned l337speak and sentence fragments lol)

I named my Chiss operative Nuruodo in SWTOR and only one person threatened to report me for using lore and nothing ever happened but I'm not going to even try anything like that with ESO just to be safe.

I wouldn't say those rules are more strict. I would say those rules are more specific.

The first rule I posted for ESO is very very powerful. Rule 1 for offensive names includes "anything else that Zenimax considers offensive". It's pretty much a catch-all rule that gives a huge amount of discretion to the game operators. Hypothetically, if the game operators consider the term "dancing" as offensive, they can ban names containing that term. However, that is just an extreme example of the amount of discretion available to them, but they obviously won't want to abuse that discretion and lose players.

Were you talking to me or Zenimax? Hmmm...maybe I will just have to find a different spelling of the name. I have used other Greek goddess names that are "safe" for my characters in beta. Maybe no Cassiopeia for me for this game.

Heh well , i did not try to create a char with any SW name in SWTOR , so never had that problem.

Also i dont add offensive names , just well know names.

I would give examples here , but i dont want to tell the ones i want also heh.

'No offensive names. This includes anything ethnically defamatory, sixually graphic, hateful, excretory or anything else Zenimax considers offensive. This rule is mostly self-explanatory, but it'd cover names such as "XxxxXxXtrolololXxXxX".'
No name that discriminates Age, Race, Disability, sixual Orientation, National Origin, Pregnancy or Gender.
Well, self-explanatory, no using names like that... So, how about maybe Maiq the Truthful??
No name that defames or impersonates another player, an employee of ZeniMax, or any property of ZeniMax. E.g. no "TES GM", "Tiber Septim" or any name that impersonates another player's account name.
Nope... cannot have anything like that... so maybe I can name my Khajiit something like Garfield or Heathcliff?
No name that contains or refers to copyrighted names. E.g. "Harry Potter", "Drizzt Do'Urden", "Mario", "Link" etc.
Can't do that either! Hmmm... maybe I could name him Puss in Boots!
No name that contains or refers to popular characters. I believe this mostly refers to any previously copyrighted work now in the public domain. E.g. "Dracula".
DRAT!!! Not allowed again! So, how about Hassan-I Sabbah?
No name that contains or refers to modern era serial killers, individuals or groups who have committed crimes against humanity in the past. E.g. google Godwin's law.
REALLY?!? Ok, maybe I can get away with something like Puss'n Booots, or Mah'eeq the Truthful, or something...
No name that is simply inappropriate content (1-6) masked via misspellings, phonetic spellings, homonyms, word combinations, or alternative spellings. E.g. "Hairy Pottar", "Draculo", "Dr'izz't Do Ur Den" etc.
Geez.... guess I will just name him Bob...

BTW I fully plan to name at least one character a mythological name (at least in part), have done so in at leat 3 of the last 4 MMOs I've played and was never reported. 2 times they were on RP servers which tend to have peeps who are more anol about these types of things. As long as you don't cause trouble and get reported MOST of these naming rules won't matter much in the long term. I wouldn't suggest making a "HitlerRulz" anytime soon though.

Mate , in the end , they want us to keep playing , to force a name change is no small matter.

I really dont think they will enforce anything unless it is either offensive OR use a real person name.

Only names i usually see that get in trouble in MMOs.

What if you just tried to be witty? A name like “Stasibait” for example which no one would get unless they know about when the story broke last December that CIA, FBI, NSA and Pentagon contractors had so many agents in WoW and Second Life that they had to form deconfliction groups so they would not be spying on eachother. http://www.cnn.com/2013/12/09/tech/web/nsa-spying-video-games/

Re: names from the game series...

I doubt that you'll have problems with this unless you use the name of an identifiable and at least semi-major character in its entirety. The abovementioned "Caius Cosades" is an example, but "Caius" as a first name is probably okay as long as the last name is something else and doesn't look like it's trying to create confusion between the two.

Using a generic-sounding name that does happen to be shared with a non-noteworthy NPC probably won't be an issue either (again, as long as it doesn't look like you're trying to be clever with it). I doubt that anyone would report (or that a GM would act on) something like an Imperial named "Adrian Decanius", even though there was an NPC with that name in Oblivion. (You probably have to go look him up to have any idea who he is, which is a good sign that it won't get force-changed.)

Cool, wasn't aware we could use spaces. Looks like I can do a first and last name then.
