[Information] Character Name Rules

Post » Sun Mar 30, 2014 2:55 pm

Indeed, that is precisely why the name change is on a reactive "report basis". They want to keep players playing, so only when one player's name threatens another's playing will they do something about it.

Can you make up titles as a first name if the rest is fine?

E.g. Lord Ardon?

Also, remember that sometimes when GMs take your name away they wont give you a chance to pick a new one - you get what they give you.

well, the banning of certain phrases, sentences, and fragments or sentences is nothing to be lol about. It is only common sense

Remember..the game is not only played in your part of the world

What has that to do with it? well, honestly...in many parts of this world a certain expressions are regarded gross insults.

I know that many of you will object to the above... get a reality check...

Now start flaming away...it just proves my point...which is (in case you have already forgotten) ...

It is just common sense to prohibit certain expressions of human language

in games that are played international.

I looked him up, and I still have no idea who that is, despite playing through Oblivion a dozen times.

That's my thoughts on lore-friendly names, too. Just stay away from "Martin Septim" and "Ulfric Stormcloak" and most other names should be okay even if they do overlap.

I think that's fairly rare. I don't think it'd happen unless the offender has repeatedly made offensive names after multiple name changes.

I can imagine players that didn't get the name they wanted will report the player that did, so that they could potentially get the name.

It seemed to be the case, I named one char XXXX the Paladin and another Madame XXXXXX in Beta and was just fine. The title thing SWTOR had going was mostly to keep smugglers from naming themselves Darth XXXX when Darth was an actual title given in the game to Sith players or Captain X when Captain was a title you would get anyway.

That generally won't work. First the reported name has to break the rules to lead to a name change, and afterwards the reported name will likely be added to a blacklist, preventing future use of the name.

Actually pretty much every MMO claims to prohibit such names in their ToS, but none I've known actually enforce it. Its more of a "covering our backside" type rule in case some cooky celeberity/company tries to sue them for a random player using a name they own the right to.

Its highly unlikely you'll get in trouble for using such a name. Even you get reported by some obsessive lore zealot (who should really learn to mind their own business and stop dicating their standards on other players).

except that it's not just "our" standards as it is clearly spelled out in the ToS...

I can use italics in a passive-aggressive manner, too!

what he was saying is that the ToS isn't actually enforced unless its offensive. its just used so they don't get in trouble in the unlikely event someone tries to sue them.

stop trying to justify your name-nazi'ing

So much for that TES Mario Dahlmer-Septim von Alucard nickname I was going for, now I'll have to settle for [norse hero] [color] [hammer/shield/fist/thorn/wood].

not being an eight year old, I understand very well what he "was saying". I just don't accept his premise. That's like saying speed limits exist so you can't sue the State because you had no idea what a safe speed was.

Also, he has no proof for what he is saying, where as I have proof that naming a character Malcom Reynolds is not allowed.

im not saying it isn't against the terms of service. im saying that anyone who goes around reporting names because they don't like them is a massive [censored]. with a capital C.

and I instantly think of people who openly admit they do this as name nazi [censored]. I mean it has nothing to do with you, thanks to no nameplates you don't even have to see it, so why are you going out of your way to ruin other peoples fun when it doesn't have anything to do with you?

He's Chuck Norris. Who would tell him no? It's not like the game was produced by Gold's Gym. Zeni would probably give him an infinite level with a beard fist.
