My character not so good?

Post » Thu Dec 15, 2011 12:14 pm

Hey folks,

just a thought about my character.
I've been playing for about 20 something hours and I am only level 14. Does this seem strange? Perhaps I've been mucking around way too much. I've got only 120 Magicka, 190 Health and 150 Stamina.
I'm Khaljit btw.

Keen to see how everyone else is going and if I need to be doing something different and get my character levelled up quite a bit more.

Cheers

I got this game on Black Friday and just now hit the level cap lol It's 81, btw, so you aren't THAT far off. If you REALLY need to level up, try grinding your skills (like get a whole bunch of alchemy ingredients and making random potions). :)

Yeah I have been doing a bit of that.. alchemy, smithing etc.. could do a lot more though obviously.
My character seems so weak.. I dunno, nothing to compare it to I guess.. maybe it's not too bad

Don't grind your crafting skills too hard, make sure you improve your combat/defense/armor too. A level 20 alchemist is going to get in trouble with a level 20 bandit in steele armor.

Sounds like you are making your character into a sneaky assassin type? Are you playing him like that or like a warrior?

Conjure up some body guards. :chaos:

I worked out last night, you can have an army of 5 things fighting for you.. 6 and possibly more in certain situations!

Actually a heck of a lot more thinking about it if you use necromancer thralls.

Do you actually use the crafts you level? By that I mean; are you wearing upgraded armor, drinking potions to buff your damage and using poisons when you fight? In this game you level no matter which skill you use, because the game assumes you were levelling those skills for a reason. If you made 300 daggers and sold them, but didn't upgrade your own gear, those level gains have gone wasted and the same counts for alchemy.

Do you use a companion? They can really help out in harder battles. make sure you equip them too with the best armor and weapons you can make.

What difficulty level are you playing on? If you haven't min/maxed and you are above adept you might want to turn it down a bit.

What level is your main combat skill compared to your other skills? If it's lagging behind you might want to find a trainer and get a boost.

Are you using your shouts? They can really make a difference too.

Are you using weapons or spells? In my experience dragons don't like Shock/lightening damage. Use a Shock spell or an enchanted weapon and see if that helps.

Also, see about getting some items with fire and some items with frost resist that you can wear when fighting dragons, it helps you survive better. The Atronarch stone can help boost magicka resist as well I believe. As an alchemist you should be able to make resist potions as well, so carry some with you for dragon fights.

Well I have a mod running that increase the exponent on skill increases making them increase about half as fast. So I have been playing about 30 hours on this latest character and am only level 8. Its wonderful to be able to explore dungeon you come across finally without ending up at level 30 before you even get to Whiterun.

to be honest, no I'm not playing him like that at all... I've playing usually with a one handed weapon and then a destruction spell (usually 'flame')

Sometimes I use a shield, sometimes I use a 2 handed weapon but i'm a bit slow with that.

2 handed = 28
1 handed = 44
Archery = 20
light armour - 19
sneak - 25
lockpicking 30
pickpocket 21
speech 41 (i have an item that adds 15 to it)
alchemy 31
illusion 15
conjuration 18
destruction 27
restoration 18
alteration 15
enchanting 25
smithing 30
heavy armour 32

Of course, I have not accessed the base perk for all of these

So it sounds like you are trying to be a Battle Mage, but you have not embraced the approach.

I am doing the same thing - specializing in one handed and my magic. Use companions and summon helpers! Stand back a bit from the fight, and build up your magicka!

Also, potions and scrolls are a pain to use because of this absurd interface, but make things your "favorite" and then use them when you can. I have noticed that in boss fights, the use of a potion can make all of the difference....

I have done very little crafting, as I have heard that it overpowers the character.

Ya if your going to use magic offensive your going to have to pump up your destruction skill. You need to have at least one good offensive perk. Looks like your one-handed is really good but that does not go so well with light armor and no sneak. Use sneak + light armor + one handed or use heavy armor + one handed. You can also mix that up with one-handed + light armor + destruction (fire). This way you kill your enemies fast before they kill you. They way I look at it is you have 4 offensive options and 2 defensive options for this type.

Defensive:
1. heavy armor, one-handed, restoration or some other defensive school of magic in off-hand
2. heavy armor, shield in off hand

Offensive
1. sneak, light armor, dual wield
2. sneak, light armor, one-handed, destruction off-hand
3. heavy armor, dual wield
4. heavy armor, one-handed, destruction off-hand

Note on heavy armor and magic, I am not aware of any direct negative effects using heavy armor and magic other than you are much slower in heavy armor.

Thanks for all your input guys.. much appreciated!

I should really just decide what I want to be good at and stick with it. With so many skill sets, it is quite hard to decide tbh.

I did have Lydia for a while but she was crap and actually ended up disappearing. I now have Mauricio (think I hired him in Riften) and he is a pretty good mage actually. Often, I can barely get and H2H combat done before he knocks the enemy to the other side of the room with some sparks.

Would you guys say that some Mercenaries are significantly better than others?? I'm sure some are better warriors/mages etc than others.

Have any of you guys hired anyone and thought? Wow, this guy was definitely worth the 500 gold!

I must say I'm sorely disappointed with the weapons in this game (can't mod them, i'm on PS3) as they damage seems to peak at about 35. Not a lot of variety in terms of attributes they have. OR, does it get a heck of a lot better late on??

I think my goal will be: solid one handed damage, plus magic.. so I guess a battlemage as has been pointed out above..

I am now lv 37 with two-handed weapon style. I think I am cool now. Just let my partner take the attention of the enemies and I would go slice them all with power sprinting attacks. All nicely slice!! In my second play I will nbe an assassin with magic. :flamethrower:
