Character Sizes

Post » Thu May 19, 2011 2:46 am

After playing Brink, it made sense that light types could only light weapons, medium types could use light to medium weapons, and heavy types could use all weapons. It made sense as in Oblivion you saw your average sized character swing a massive warhammer/claymore seem somewhat 'silly'. Another pro would be that you selected body type could affect your mobility and health, light types are fast but have low health, medium types are average, and heavy would be slow but have a large amount of health. Lastly I would expect bandits to be in Skyrim so you would probably attacked on your travels, so if you were light or medium bandits would attack you, but if you were warhammer toting heavy your would-be attackers would think twice before going against you. What do you think?

p.s If there is already thread like this, I cannot be bothered to the 'sacred' search button.

Meh. I don't want the way my character looks to determine what I can and cannot do. This is fantasy anyway. In fantasy, weak looking characters can be really strong, while big characters can be weak. It isn't as black and white as in real life.

Depends what fantasy you read. In David Gemmell's books the law of physics still pretty much apply. Just exaggerated. However I agree that some computer games don't e.g. Cloud and his sword.

TES I feel follows more realism, in Oblivion every character body was ripped to shreds, they all looked like Olympians. Most body builders aren't strong, they go for size and look. At competition weight they are at their weakest. You want to look at http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=http://www.citylife.co.uk/img/13491/21929_carlos_accosta_as_apollo_image_courtesy_of_angela_taylor.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.sodahead.com/entertainment/what-do-you-call-male-ballerinas/question-1565537/&h=600&w=402&sz=136&tbnid=TK4q9GIFv826kM:&tbnh=274&tbnw=184&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dmale%2Bballet%2Bdancers%26tbm%3Disch%26tbo%3Du&zoom=1&q=male+ballet+dancers&hl=en&usg=__3stEbqYssZBBTNAZ7tKiKddb88E=&sa=X&ei=bcHoTe-fBIfLsgbexsnnCg&sqi=2&ved=0CC4Q9QEwAg and rugby players for your realistic fantasy body model. However, that being said I dont think OP should be the case becuase it limits people's options in character design. If you want to play this way you can that's the beauty of TES.

Even if it makes no sense that a skinny little boy that looks like a girl can lift and swing a giant sword all day long.

It would be very frustrating if the game told me "Your short character cannot hold this large weapon" so I'm going to say NO. This would also make certain weapons pointless and only be used to sell at a shop. Also war hammers shouldn't make bandits afraid of you. They know you are strong but war hammers are not the fastest weapons out there so they would expect you to fail.

I'm guessing theres presets like small, medium, large, and it depends like if your smaller you run faster and bigger you can carry more weight becuase you have more muscle and medium is a balance?

I would much rather have your character inherent abilities determine their ability to effectively use weapons. For instance, if your character has low strength, they would find it very difficult to use a heavy weapon, so their attacks would be quite slow. I'm hoping that this might be part of the game . . . I'm just not sure how it could be implemented now that most of the attributes have been removed.

I'm not a big fan of the OP's idea. I think that any body size should be able to use any weapon.
