Character Traits - Will They Return Or Not?

Post » Sat Nov 28, 2015 3:12 am

In the trailers, in that part where that Vault-Tec rep asks for our data confirmation, we don't see any options to choose our character's traits.

Considering that character traits are chosen at the character creation, does this means that we won't see any trait system again? :(

If that's the case, that's too bad...

Definitely not.

I don't think Bethesda is interested in adding many rpg features to the game, especially ones that have any sort of consequence.

It looks that way - the character creation system boils down purely to SPECIAL and perks, with no skills or traits.

I see :( Too bad then!

Dear mods, please lock this topic! It's already been rendered redundant!

I noticed this too. I am thinking it will be a Skyrim style leveling system with perk trees. To me I am fine with this because it feels natural to me. To many it feels like grinding and they hate it. Honestly though, if you look at people in the real world that are really good at something, they got they way after many many hours-days-weeks-months-years of intense practice, or grinding.

I hope though that it doesn't lead to lessening the importance of other aspects and devolve into only needing to be good at killing to be successful.

The last thing Bethesda wants is for the game to be unfriendly to casuals. Since traits involve negatives which must be balanced out, they won't exist, just like damage threshold.

I'll miss traits. Traits were fun. Like four eyes. It didn't ADD all that much but it was nice for flavour.

I don't think they haven't been gotten rid of, I think instead it's a Skyrim style leveling system or the part where traits are chosen or the traits themselves contain story spoilers and they siad they didn't want to talk about the story yet.

To early to judge. But yes it seems that way.

We don't know anything for sure yet.

Maybe it will be some skyrim like system.

Or maybe something compeletely new.

We don't know yet. For all we know, we select character traits after being thawed out. If you recall, you didn't select everything all at once in the Fallout 3 intro; you selected your SPECIAL stats in 'You're SPECIAL' when you were a baby, and then took the GOAT at 16. All we saw was the Vault-Tec salesman giving us our SPECIAL selection.

I suspect we won't get to choose traits, which I'll miss. I liked them.

I′ll miss traits too, but I wont cry over them, because personally I just picked two traits every time because they basically gave so much positive for so little negative, so it wsalmost like getting free perk X3

Traits ended up largely having the same problem birthsigns did in the older TES games, in that any positives/negatives they offered usually got negated by level 5, thus making them largely worthless as an actual means to define your character.

There was also the problem of making you pick something that is supposed to be important, even if it didn't actually turn out to be, that early in the game. It akin to companies who do pre-order bonuses such as
-Preorder from Gamestop and get the stealth pack!
-Preorder from Bestbuy and get the combat pack!
-Preorder from Walmart and get the persuasion pack!
Its like....... how the hell do I know which one of these I am going to enjoy the most..... when I haven't played the game yet? How do I know which trait I want...... when I don't know how the game plays yet?

I suspect they might do something akin to Skyrim's standing stones, and offer the player some way, maybe like implants or something, to get trait-like effects, but you can only have one of the implants at a time.

That's not really a problem if you just picked them for flavour though. Which is what I thought the entire point of traits was anyway.

That doesn't make for good RPG mechanics though.

Choices SHOULD matter.

And no, they weren't made for that, besides Nv's Wild wasteland.

The choice DID matter, I saw my RP choice reflected and facilitated within the game. And I liked Wild Wasteland maybe all traits should be overhauled and turned all flavourful like.

Choices should matter. So improve the trait system and make it more important. Problem solved. I liked the idea of fleshing out my character further with things he or she is born with. I lke the idea that there are some things that are just inherent to my character that can't change. You can't fix needing glasses, or having a small frame, or having a hot-headed personality.

Traits are nice, but if they're going to be included then they should support the type of game Fallout is now. While I liked that Obsidian brought back traits in New Vegas I never found myself using any of them because the vast majority were just transplanted from FO1 and 2 to NV without any regard for how different New Vegas actually was from a gameplay standpoint.

Let's use Small Frame as an example. Small Frame was a huge deal in FO1 and 2 because agility was one of the most important stats in combat, it determined how much you could do in a single turn, and the carry weight you sacrificed was equally important since everything was weighted in FO1 and 2, including ammo. In New Vegas you get an extra agility point, but agility isn't terribly important. Then there's the trade off, your limbs supposedly get crippled faster, but I personally didn't notice much of a difference. Traits in NV just didn't feel like they had enough of an impact.

-Laser eye surgery
-Get fat and/or fit
-(legal)Drugs and lots of counseling

-And..... SCIENCE!

Also, im not advoacting getting rid of it entierly, but changing it up a bit like they did with birthsigns in Skyrim, but better obviously.

All things considered, I do really hope that traits might come back in a way or two...

Maybe it's like what Nate has pointed out, that we choose them after de-freezing. After all, would being frozen all that long might have some effects on the body?

Or maybe it's like what AwesomePossum has suggested, that we may get them through a system like implants or something... Might be because of the outcome of the quest?

Nevertheless, if it's not reappearing, I'll just shrug it off and deal with it anyway... I'm not the one making the game here, so I can't change it...

Except with mods.

Mods are panaceas.

I really hope they would, New Vegas showed that you can integrate crucial parts of the old game system to Bethesda's. If there'll be something that I'm disappointed about FO4, it will certainly be stuff like traits and skills. :(
