Characteristically Evil: Part Six

Installment Six: Crime and Punishment:

I find it annoying how no matter what laws you break in Oblivion, nobody would ever recognize you for what you are except the guards [Grey Cowl excluded]. In Skyrim I intend to be particularly hostile toward Altmer, but will Altmer recognize that? If I travel to a town with Altmer residents, will they avoid me? Will there be news of a traveler who hates Altmer and is known to kill them without remorse? I think if your character is a well-known felon, there should be recognition for that.

The guards in Oblivion were always an issue with me. How come they knew whatever you've done at all times? Even when invisible, your bounty would go up 1000 if you murder someone, and the guards will be ready to chase you whenever you took off your enchanted invisible gear. Now I believe this has already been fixed with the witness system, but what happens when you catch the person who saw you commit the crime? Are you forced to just kill them too? I think the player should have the ability to pay off witnesses [even guards] to keep it quiet. Also, how come you were the only person able to commit a crime and be arrested? Granted, there were people in the prisons, but they never had the chance to get out and there was never an arrest for the player to witness [quests excluded]. I even attempted an experiment with a Battlehorn Man-at-Arms: I got him to attack and kill a guard, but upon our next encounter the guard just tried to kill him on sight [it also glitched the Imperial Man-at-Arms so now all the guards try to kill him every time he leaves Battlehorn Castle, but I digress].

There may be more to add to this later, but for now any thoughts?

If people know you as a murderer or an overall nasty person, they ought to fear you and try not to cross your path, maybe shrinking away when your walking towards them and so forth.

And maybe if an NPC commits a crime, they're responsibility and confidence, as well as they're financial status, can determine whether they pay the fine, follow the guardsman to jail, or resist arrest.

Yeah, in Skyrim (I hope) the crime and punishment system will be way better than Oblivion, I'm sure of it.

i hope there will be some kind of system that acknowledges this, good point; the guards in oblivion never actually
gave anybody else the chance surrender or go to prison, they just hunted them down and took them out. i'd
like to see a change in this regard with skyrim.

If you have five (5) previous installments, you should probably link them in your OP.

...just sayin'.
