Maybe you can use it to do sketches of Moira the hagraven in her lil love shack.

*I've been stockpiling it too. Only ~20 hours in, but figured it would have something to do with smithing. guess not.

Actually, when I first got it, I was wondering how to combine with iron ore to make steel ingot.

That was my thought, too. Got it very early in the game and held onto it forever, waiting to find a smelter where my char could use it.

Or that wood that you can cut up with the woodcutter's axe + charcoal + fire. TORCHES!! CAUSE HOLY [censored] ARE THEY RARE IN SKYRIM!

Um.. they're everywhere, actually... many (not all) torches in caves can be taken off the wall.

Technically if you really want it to be realistic you should need charcoal to even use the smelter and forge, since charcoal is the fuel being burned to heat them up.

My guess is that this was the original intent, and that late in development they disable the feature. Hence, it's sold by almost every crafting vendor but has no use.

There is a blacksmith mod which changes the steel recipe to iron and charcoal, making it needed and more in line with reality than what is default.

Honestly that is what i thought it was for when I first started playing. Now I just throw it into my fire pit. Guess I am weird like that. svcks I cannot get the mod since I play on 360. Ohs well.

Same here. I have been carrying one piece of charcoal for a very long time just for that special one time use whatever it would be. Now I know. I could always use an atronarch.

So, the firewood is useless too, then? I've been trying to figure out what to do with it, once I've cut it. It seems strange for them to implement the woodcutting thing, if we can't use the wood. Just for a little cash and RP?

I'm surprised its not used in smithing since coal helps make steel in real life.

Theres so many items that I deemed "useless," but when I got to the daedric summoner under the college and found all the recipes I began my stupid search for brooms, ruined books, skulls, and other seemingly worthless items :D

lol I have 100s of this crap and I wiki to find it has 2 uses..

http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Charcoal

Really? 1 quest and making 1 item - which is a scroll.

You obviously haven't figured out their real use.

You're supposed to kill wild game like Elk, Bear, and have a BBQ party in Riften. You need a lot though, like 300 or so.

I thought it was for making steel stronger (high carbon add in for stronger steel for swords, etc.). I saved a dozen or so in my chest until I saw that steel only uses two different kinds of ore, with no way to use charcoal to bump it up. With all of the thought put into the crafting skill sets, I was sure it wouldbe possible. Oh, well.

The thing is, you don't have to have charcoal per se for that. I expect in ancient times when people first learned steelmaking, they got the needed carbon from varying sources, from charcoal to coal to peat. Although charcoal would have been easiest for anybody in a wooded area, I imagine.

You could select any random item, say a plate, and say it is worthless. That is the equivalent to this.

This is really how it should be used anyways. That's how you make steel in real life.

But what am I saying...Skyrim is a fantasy world where everything is different than real life. For instance, it would be CRAZY if fire ...burns....

Oh dear... I can't stop trolling myself. :ahhh:
