Charging money for mods?

Sigh. This is getting absolutely ridiculous on the PC.

VALVe ok'd some PC gamers who are modders who made a Portal 2 mod and to sell it for $4.99 dollars (USD). This is stupid.

http://www.pcgamer.com/2014/07/16/portal-2-mod-aperture-tag-releases-on-steam-for-a-price/

I as a fellow PC gamer who is a modder am deeply disappointing by the business the way PC gaming is going now. I do not want to charge PC gamers EVER for the mods that I make if I upload them to be downloaded from the internet. I will always let the mods be FREE. If I want to make money I will put all the mods up in a portfolio for my resume and hopefully a video game development company hires me. I do not believe modders should be paid this way only by making a portfolio to get hired by a video game development company.

Before anyone says there's Counter-Strike, Garry's Mod, and DayZ those started off as FREE mods and then ended up being their own STANDALONE video games which the video game development companies ended up HIRING those modders or having those mods and modders become part of the video game development company.

I really hope ZeniMax Media Inc. and Bethesda Softworks NEVER let PC gamers who are modders to sell the mods that they make. Instead HIRE the most talented modders.

I am highly against this.

Definitely sets a disturbing precedent. But honestly I saw this coming.

It seems that VALVe is letting every possible way to earn money be available on Steam. Which is a bad idea. Especially when VALVe gets rid of Steam Greenlight and lets any one sell whatever they want on Steam.

I can see it ending up as a catastrophe.

They don't allow modders to charge for mods for Bethesda games.

I doubt game companies are going to give modders - as Valve has done - permission to sell their mods, unless there's big money in it for the game companies.

Note: @Freddo, is correct.

Well VALVe takes 70% cut from this mod each time it sells from what I heard.

Lets hope ZeniMax Media Inc. and Bethesda Softworks don't follow just to earn money quickly in every possible way.

Wonder if Gstaff has anything to say about this.
