Children In the Game

Post » Wed Sep 29, 2010 6:03 pm

Well i see it now and the only conclusion that i gather is that if kids were in the game it would be fine to see in it for authenticity, but when you attack them its automatically not a hit or a message says something like the child is protected by a barrier set by the parent and you see the kids parent try to attack you and them comes the guards and they say something like " You dare to attack a defenseless child i hope they rip you to pieces you better come now or be prepare yourself ". That would be alright or your blocked from attacking them period.

That's a pretty dumb way of doing it, but I agree with everything else. Perhaps it could be done like Fable, in which that one town made it illegal to draw your weapons or something.

The only thing that's going to svck if Children are in the game is Thieving. If they see you steal something then your gonna get a bounty and that is going to get old. Also if they hear you sneak they'll raise an alarm that wakes up the parents which puts you back to square one.

and this sort of thing is why they would be great being in it the realism of the situation would be increased, most times in TES no one gives you a second glance but we all know that in real life you enter a small town especially back in those days ( no tv/computer games/telephone ) people were nosy especially kids im sure and they would be challenging to work around lol

...child pulling a sled...

All I want to know is can I steal the sled like the mischievous thief I am and ride it down a large hill and off a cliff?

But seriously, I have no problem with people of all ages being in my games. It adds immersion. I'd rather not see them be immortal since I feel that only fuels the http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/LordBritishPostulate and rage if they're acting no good at all. I'm of the opinion that whatever someone does is their own business; I may not particularly care about said child (not unless I, as a person, or my characters themselves grow to), but I'm sure people don't go running around condoning various nefarious acts against them. If it happens, then it should happen for a reason, such as to demonstrate how immoral someone is, or how far they've slipped into instability.

And sometimes accidents happen, but children should be as safe as humanly possible, wherever they are. No parent who cares about the well-being of their child would allow otherwise, but there are tragedies in the world.

I'd like to see something done with them if possible. They're people and make decisions, if in different ways, and of course see the world differently. There wouldn't necessarily have to be quests, but interaction doesn't need to be limited to one choice on either spectrum.

If kids were in the game they could give a few of them interesting personalities. One thing that comes to mind is paying a thieves guild kid to cause diversions or steal stuff from people's homes for gold.

It doesn't bother me. I never play a psychopathic murderer who kills everything in his way, so unkillable, docile NPCs of any kind don't bother me one bit.

I think you could do some pretty interesting things with children in TES - befriending a group of street urchins who show you hidden passageways throughout the city, or encountering a child being used as an informant by the Thieves Guild.

That or we get obnoxious, self-centered little monstrosities that run about incessantly trying to open conversation with you and blocking doorways and stealing stuff and whining and aaaaaaaaaaAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!

(We'll just have to wait and see.)

Little Lamplight in Fallout 3 pretty much destroyed any faith I had in Bethesda's ability to write children characters. Not that I had much faith in their ability to write anyway, but that was just bad, bad all around. If that's what I can expect from them, I'd rather they not bother in the first place.

The Thieves Guild is operated by a cabal of orphans.

You could pay the children minimal wages to do important stuff for you!

I feel like adding children adds to just how natural the game world feels overall. The ability to kill them while I guess would add realism I must ask... is it really needed? Are you going to go out and kill children cause you can? The only thing it'd achieve is controversy. But like I said having children just roaming the town would just make it feel a bit more natural.

I expect that if children are unkillable, the sadistic players will just go around killing their parents and creating orphans! lol

Invincible children are more immersive than no children at all. imo.

What if you could have children? haha, probably not.

Yeah I don't really understand those people. XD

Now I'd hate to bring up Fable since it wasn't that great to begin with, but I think the Fable series handled children well, and I don't mean the having your own child part.

It's just, if you were an evil character and you started a ruckus in town and started killing folks, all the children would basically take off and hide / disappear. I don't know about some people but that worked for me.
