CHIM..Don't hate me.

I believe realizing that in being part of everything, you are nothing, when CHIM is reached. IMO. I'm sure I'm still way off though.

A bit. That is what zero sum is, and thus by being nothing you turn into nothing.

Ah some clarification. Thank you.

Zero Sum can be reached by someone that is going nowhere near CHIM.

However, reaching CHIM means someone gets very near Zero Sum.

CHIM /= Nirvana. The fact that they have different names is proof enough of that. CHIM is far more selfish, as it entails, at least at first, the retention of "I". In other words, it's "We're right here, and I'm not going anywhere."

Or is Nirvana more selfish, as it entails giving up all versions of "you" (not the subject's self, but the subject's relation to "any of you")? In other words, it's, "Time to bounce, ya'll, I'm out."

It's not Zen, either, which, in my somewhat facetious opinion, is static OCD.

It's not the Tao, but then, what is?

In these matters, Nalion is wise. Then again, he's listening to the Devil of the East.

Yeah, I meant to say zero sum actually. That's what I was talking about in my earlier post, just mistyped.

It's always the same with CHIM threads. At one point, there will always be one (who thinks who knows exactly what it is) who spoils what it is. And then it leads to total confusion. Because the one asking mostly neither has the background nor the knowledge to understand its meaning. (And too often, the one who spoils it doesn't really understand it either.)

Telling what CHIM is to someone who didn't put at least a little of his own research in it is like answering the question "Excuse me, Sir, but where am I?" with "Here". The answer might be correct, but it doesn't help the one who poses the question.

So, to the thread starter or anyone who wants to know about CHIM: do a little work for yourselves.

Here are a few pointers for the start:

Have a go at the Sermons and read them. Read them, don't budge out in the middle because you think it's gibberish. Read them again just to be sure you get a feeling for the language and the text itself.
While reading, try to answer the following question: To whom are these texts adressed?

When you can answer above question, ask yourself why Vivec specifically chose that adress. Also, keep in mind that they are titled "Lessons", so they are meant to teach something, besides being poetry.
Another little hint that I hope might make things easier: when you come across seemingly overly complicated passages. A lot of Vehk's Sermons are metaphors for things that are undescribable for most readers. Imagine someone never having seen or heard of snow before and you have to describe it to him. You can't just say its snow, because he wouldn't understand it. Maybe you would say something along the lines of "it's like white, cold down falling from the clouds".
Vehk's doing exactly that. Describing the "indescribable" in words that can be understood.

Then, take Vehk's Teachings, they elaborate on the Sermons. Also, the Loveletter of the Fifth Era is an important thing to read. Keep in mind, CHIM in itself is - once you figure it out - not a very complicated thing to "know" - anyone can do it and even have it without even knowing. Including you. The greater meaning of it - for Tamriel et all - and thus the fascination, reveals itself when putting thought into it. And noone can think for you, you just have to do it by yourself.

Oh, and as for the original question, no, when you do all I said above, you won't know what CHIM is - but you might be on the way. And you will have some ground to walk on once you take the next steps.

I actually mistyped on that, as I said once. You obviously wouldn't know that, but thank you for being condescending and assuming I haven't read any of those materials. Could it be that...oh..I'm not sure, but maybe I did read those (I did) and just wanted to discuss a little without someone coming in and just telling me how stupid I am? Really, if you want to come back with something constructive that would be much appreciated, since I am figuring you know more than most, but don't just sweep through with a thinly veiled attempt to show off that you know more.

I didn't figure out what it was from what people told me, if you had read back I actually posed my Nirvana-Zero Sum comparison after reading a thread that was linked to in here, so it wasn't just people in this thread ruining it. That brings it up to two points for being arrogant though! Good job!

I'm aware that he is right in that I need to read those things. The thing is that I have. I still have them open in other tabs in fact. I'm making a commentary on the fact that he really didn't contribute anything positive, just kind of stopped in to say he knows CHIM and that we really don't deserve to talk about it.

Edit: I'm aware I'm being a dike, and apologies to Nalion for it, it's just a pet peeve of mine. I am figuring at this point I won't be getting help from him.

The arrogant variant of a possible response of mine to your most recent posts:
"Read my post further than the part where I say you should read the Sermons."

The more helpful variant of a possible response of mine to your recent posts:
"I have outlined the course which basically every CHIM post in recent history has gone. Obviously, I think this course wrong (one of the reasons I actually wrote a post in this thread). I also gave some pointers in which direction to look - a direction where naturally, the sermons come first. If you have read the Sermons, good for you. You should have at least a little bit of background now. Now, allow me to emphasize the middle part of my post, where I ask a specific question. In fact, anyone reading it is welcome to post what he or she thinks might be the answer to it. Maybe it helps the thread. I do invite you, though, SanguineRooster, to answer it above all. In contrast to others in this thread, I will not offer you the solution, but only try to shed some light on the way to the solution. Whether you take this invitation to step on this way or not is your choice."

If you've all finished CHIMPing around, how about this?

What is "chim"?

From the Ehlnofex: an ancient sigil connoting 'royalty', 'starlight', and 'high splendor'. As with most characters of that dangerous language, the sigil CHIM constantly distorts itself. Those scholars that can perceive its shape regard it as a Crowned Tower that threatens to break apart at the slightest break in concentration.

Representations of the chim, and by extension the Psijic Endeavor, are always protean values, such as the anumidi models renowned by the Dwemer, the Scarab of contemporary astrolothurges, and the Striking ("exact egg-cracking") of old Argonia. All of these representations possess an innate and constant aspect of transformation.

Quote Misnomer - Engineering Guild
Sounds really interesting, although I don't mod. I think starlight is actually the description, because you cannot focus on it without it changing, it is always moving (to our eyes, anyway, because of the speed of light). Then it seems royalty would have applied it to themselves (but they aren't really my epitome of transformation) because they are that self-centered. Other people would then associate high splendor with the word CHIM after it became synonymous with royalty, because again, I don't think of 'high splendor' as describing transformation either. To me, it seems like it is more of the ineffable quality of constant change. The point where change itself can become constant (because they are opposites). Or that's what I was thinking.

Oh, how noble of you to take it like a man and not flip out like a small child and start a flame war over a comment meant to help you in the first place. I'm sure that there's a special place in heaven reserved for you now.

You know, I've always had this romantic notion that CHIM was like this: there's two guys sitting in a bar having a beer. One of them sighs into his drink and turns to the other one, saying, "You know, I don't think that I exist." The other one says "Duh, nobody in this bar does 'cause we didn't pay for the drinks" and the first guy says "Oh shi -- " and disappears because he never existed in the first place. But the second guy doesn't disappear because he was able to see the whole thing from outside, looking in through the window, so he became the owner of the bar.

Although, in retrospect, many parts of that allegory are probably asinine, since it's an imperfect mental image that I once used to visualize the thing and I had never written it down before. So I guess it's food for thought.

Also, @Michael: Don't you owe us a Mountain Farting Contest or something?

Possibly flawed anologies:
Zero-summing is CTDing.
CHIM is using the CS in real-time to change the world.

You Zero-sum because you realize the world - inlcuding you - doesn't exist, and you think there is no point in existing.
CHIM is where you realize the world doesn't exist, but you play along.

As to the people saying "don't tell them what CHIM is!", I think that those Sermons are occassionally overly convoluted and nearly-impenetrable. The topic is confusing, thus why it comes up so much. Yes, a true "Lore Master" would have deduced it on his/her own from the in-game evidence. But some players aren't trying to attain that level of knowledge of the game's mythos, and just want to know what the rest of the Lore Buffs are talking about, and what that crazy word CHIM is referring to when they see it in-game. :)
