CHIMology 101

Post » Fri Oct 15, 2010 7:02 am

Seeing as there seems to be a new thread on CHIM about once a week, and often times it runs itself to the limit, I figured maybe we should keep an ongoing thread on the subject like they do with the "Metal" thread in general. At least until the subject wears itself out. (Which I figured would have happened years ago, but apparently not.) I know, I know, it's the newbies like myself that keep it going in the first place. (Not really a bad thing when you think about it, eh??)

So to begin where the other one left off:

From the esteemed Nalion:

Are you guys really sure that you don't just take the symptom for the cause?

And let's not forget our MOD Dogsbody's contribution:

I've thought CHIM might not be unrelated to the state of Daffy Duck in Duck Amuck, when he finds out that he is a character drawn by the Animator.

So.........go ahead already. You know you want to. :chaos:

I am against this thread, its better to find out on your own then have the lore nuffs explain.

One of those had a good explanation. It also seems the answer you get depend on how the qeustion is asked. I should look into that some more.

Personally, my idea of CHIM was similar to that Daffy Duck situation. Where you can load, save, and use the almighty console.

I actually like this idea. I haven't kept up to date recently but it was only browsing the lore section that I ever found out about CHIM in the first place. Should be a helpful tool to anyone looking for info about it

This IS NOT about the loremasters coming in and explaining CHIM to everyone. Where does it even say that in the first post? It's about an ongoing thread to talk about the subject. Something that happens about once a week here anyway, so it's just beginning where the other thread stopped.

How's this for a question? I'm sure somewhere it's been brought up, but with well over a hundred threads on the subject, who knows?

Did Vivec achieve CHIM when he tapped the heart? I'm thinking no. Because he wasn't entirely free. He was still a slave to the heart. It was a very big step forward, but it wasn't the very end of the journey. I'm thinking maybe he achieved CHIM, that final subgradient, the last step to reach the last destination, sometime after his seperatrion from the heart. (Maybe that dance upon a certain Daedra Lords tower that's being talked about in another thread was the final thing needed.)

But that's just a passing thought. What do I know? I'm digging a hole through to the other side of the world with a teaspoon, when others have picks, shovels, and carbine drills.

Thought that the final subgradient, [Z], was a GOAL of not just the "process-state" of CHIM, but all of the Walking Ways.

No, I don't believe he did...

He also doesn't have CHIM when the Nerevarine meets him In Vivec City.

Also, you shouldn't think of CHIM as a thing to be achieved, more of a... quality that someone possesses.

I have CHIM. So much CHIM that I don't know what to do with it. Maybe I'll go unmake something.

What you don't know is that after you achieve CHIM there is another level called Super CHIM Level 2, some say there are more than 4. You can even turn into a golden monkey with your Super CHIM level high enough!

Lul at DBZ reference

To me, having CHIM is like being a Q from Star Trek: The Next Generation

Or like being Trance Gemini from Andromeda. In a way, I suppose. Not exactly.

What I dont understand is this: In regard to a previously posted comment: How can you exist after you realize that you dont really exist at all and the world around is not real either? Logic kills you right then and there when you realize that.

No one says it's easy to avoid a http://www.imperial-library.info/obscure_text/sporedream.shtml and turn it into a victory. And no, it's not logical. It's entirely contradictory. So's the entire existence of the world. The fact that's it's illogical is no obstacle to it being possible as far as the narrative is concerned.

There's a word often used to describe god: "Ineffable". One of its meanings is "indescribable", which sort of fits what we're talking about.

"The world, unfortunately, is real; I, unfortunately, am Borges."

It's not about logic, it's about myth and magic.

Anyway, and just for the hell of it;

Did you ever watch Wile E chase the Roadrunner? The Roadrunner rounds a curve real fast and Wile E misses the curve and runs off the cliff instead. Does he fall right then? No. He's able to run a few paces first. Then he notices that there isn't any ground under him, and then he falls. With CHIM he'd know there wasn't any ground to begin with, so he can run without now and he would proceed to do so.

Oh, and then he'd catch and eat that damn bird.

Okay maybe not so good. How about my favorite stand by? (Don't know who originally said it, but I think I saw it in a post by Nalion, who said it was from someone else.)

(Paraphrase)

A guy with CHIM walks into a bar........the punch line is literally anything. Anything at all.

But the punchline is "Ow, that hurts" or "Why didnt he see the bar and try to avoid hitting it?" .
How does that explain CHIM though? (I must be either really tired or really dumb)

With CHIM, YOU basically decide what happens when you hit the bar. You may not hit the thing at all.

If the Coyote had CHIM, he wouldn't fall down after running across the cliff. He'd keep running because he CHOSE to, fully realizing there is no ground under him.

Got a rather inane question; If the roles had been reversed, with Akatosh's Heart instead of Lorkhan's, what would be different? General and descriptively speaking?

Well, seeing as it would really be the same thing, probably not much, though in reality you'd have to switch the roles of Anu and Padhome around, too, for it to make sense.

(Which I figured would have happened years ago, but apparently not.)

Yeah, me too. It's kind of why we need new lore in TESV. These are all fun ideas, but there is only so long Vivec faceraping Azura and the nature of the dwemer can stay interesting without having new perspectives.

The way Adanorcil explained it to me is that in the beginning there was a single being. where did he come from? who knows. But he had nothing to compare himself to, so he split his mind into two things. These things made things, but it's all in the enourmous schitzo-dream of some macroorganizm. when you relaize this, you realize that you don't exist as yourself, but that you are in fact the consious mind of this god. Understanding this and not just going braindead on the spot from hopelessness and fear as well as a massive sensory overload will allow you, the individual and the god, to truly exist. And since you know it's a dream, you can lucid-dream and do all kinds of crazy crap.

Seriously, I can't see this as happening without the world just ending. I'm not a stubborn ass, I just can't reconcile this coming completely to fruition and having the world remain stable.

Akatosh is Lorkhan. They are the 1 and 1, no one would notice if they switched places.
