So, China won the Great (nuclear) War?

Ou tof interest, in Fallout lore what happened to Russia/Soviet Union? Was Russia taken over by China?

Soviet Union still existed in the 21st century. See:

The nuclear arsenal was so decentralized IIRC that it would be impossible for the soviets or chinese to knock all of them out before retaliation. ICBMs, ballistic missile subs, bombers... Did you know that for a while there was at least one airborne B-52 packing serious nuclear firepower 24/7 for quite a while during the cold war?

Umm... Accually every airborne B-52 and other SAC Bombers during the Cold War, had atleast 2 Hydrogen Bombs on board, just incase they got the "Go" Code, (No Pun inteded). The B-52's and other SAC Bombers in the air, were always ready to cross the pole. :nuke:

Not in the air, that would have been a treaty violation. That was only permitted for moving weapons around.

However...... We DID keep bombers on standby. They could be airborne within three minutes of notification. (and yes, I watched it happen, I was stationed at a SAC base in the 80's) It was interesting to watch, but, the implications of them actually taking off, which NEVER had happened before, was a little.... scary.

This is my first Fallout game, and as I play, one thing I occasionally wonder is how the rest of the world turned out. As such I'd like to see a game, either sequel or spinoff, that explores more of the Fallout world. I think some of the expansions help this a bit with seeing more of the US, and even showing some Pre-war stuff. But I'd like to see what happened to other countries/continents; China, Europe (which is pretty better off then USA or China, if we are seeing people like Moriarty or Tenpenny coming to make a profit), Canada, or even places like Africa, Australia, or maybe even Japan since they in the area and might have gotten effected. Maybe the rumored MMO will do something like this.

Well, I think one thing that people are forgetting is that while the Fallout universe might have had popular culture stuck in the 1950's, the technology certainly wasn't. It diverged from ours and the great war happened in 2077 to boot. We can't know how advanced any of the countries were besides the United States and China. And the only solid thing that we know about the Chinese technology was that it was advanced, but not advanced enough for power armor.

Actually we may know a lot. China is also stuck in the 50's-60's. Everyone wears the same Maoist overalls, the radio broadcast reeks of the ideology of that time and is a quite chilling pastiche of stuff you would hear right up to Nixon's visit. The emphasis on guerilla warfare with lightly armed stealthy fighters equipped with AK 47s seems to fit Maoist strategy, with agents planted in the urban population to spread disorder and panic among the masses. The Chinese manual is also an old style piece of propaganda not seen ion China since Deng Xiaoping. Unless this is an elaborate cover it would seem China's great leap forward actually leaped in this alternate universe, and they were able to make Chinese communism work without adopting parts of the Western model.

Or they risked their lives to get across the ocean because Europe is even more of a hellhole. According to Fallout Tactics, England sank.

(Please, I am a french dude, so excuse my bad english)

That's cause there's not much in Africa worth nuking...

Well, indeed, actually, can we really say that are worthing any bombs AFRICA ...Or even MIDDLE-EAST ?
(No one mentionned Middle-East before ?...Tired to hear about it at TV ? :hehe: )
...Although bombs rained over Afghanistan and Irak last years and although Iran is becoming more and more a problem.
Fact is american nuke bombs would have ruined any chances to get benefits from natural resources there.
I guess that's the same problem with Africa : You can't just piss on the cake you wanna eat.
Even China has a lot of interests in Africa and helps warlords there
(Look how they protected Kartum Governement from Soudan while slaughtering millions of peoples, for exemple)

Someone wrote siomething very interesting, upper : Without Bandung Conferency in 1955, a lot of ancient colonies wouldn't have had their independency.
(I won't discuss here about if it's a good thing or not they finally had it, because I have no interest in doing such a thing.)
One thing is sure, technology did not spread at the same rythm in countries from which West Colionalist countries left
(South Africa still the most industrialized for exemple)
Basically, behind the masks, most of these "independent countries" are still west colonies, with some local war lords to sell the resources and to buy OUR weapons in exchange...
...But, these warlords learnt how to slow down the resources market so they can earn more money : After all, they have weapons and even if we have better ones, we don't like so much fighting !
If north-west countries wouldn't have left these colonies, there are chances the developpement wouldn't at all have been the same !
In such a case, Fallout Timeline Divergence could have proposed a world with extremely industrialized Africa ; something perhaps worth nuking, then.

...Could you imagine Huge Town ruins lost in some post-nuclear jungle in Africa ?
Some of you might have heard about the "Red Forest" in the Exclusion Zone, near Chernobyl (Ukraine)
There are a lot of mutations reports from there, particulary usual species having now giant forms.
Of course bombs would make a lot more wastes than the water-foam explosion of the well-known reaktor.
But, many centuries after the war, I am quite s?re the nature wouldn't look like some kind of desert as it is described in Fallout with a real taste for the "Mad Max" style.
Althouh I loved "Mad Max", there are indeed a lot more chances the bombed countries would look like some kind of (much broken) "Angkor" with roots across stones and asphalt so much time after the war.

In FO3 "timeline divergence", Europe would have collapsed in 21st during a "Resource War" :
There are actually less and less places in the world where to find resources ;
North P?le, Africa and Middle-East are the only true convergence points (Perhaps you might add South-America too)
Actually, USA were the first to go fighting "for" these places (whatever "peace" or "resources" would be or not the real reasons behind all this)
Right now, 2009 economical crysis from WEST might make it harder and harder, particulary for USA, to keep soldiers there...
Will Europe, now replace USA in Middle-East in order to finish some kind of vulture job ?
Will friends from yesterday experiment some hard times in sharing the dead meat ? :nothanks:

Might the "divergence" between FO3 and reality be thiner than some peoples are kindly to think here ?
I am not sure, on my side, in OUR reality, China would be a less probable adversary for USA than Russia could be.
Let's say China would perhaps take a risk to expand itself with Russia as neighborhood...

Tactics is viewed more as semi-canon isnt it?

I mean Britain sinking is just stupid honestly. Britain does not sit on any fault lines or tectonic stresses that in the even of nuclear fallout would cause it to sink; they wouldnt even think that in the 1950s. That sort of thinking (that islands float on top of water) is 14th century stuff.
And clearly the sea level hasnt risen to proportions that would cause much to islands to dissapear either, otherwise DC would be coastal instead of slightly inland.

It doesnt say that in the Fallout Bible nor anywhere else in canon.

I think we can safely roll eyes at that one and ignore it..

A lot of you are missing a major key point. The Enclave, which at the time of the war was a shadow government of the U.S. wanted to destroy the world because they saw the majority of people as the garbage of the human race. That's one of the reasons the vaults werent actually ment to save anyone. That's also the main reason the Enclave is so powerful.

Granted, it is unknown as to who actually started the war of 2077, but as soon as it started the Enclave would have wanted to nuke EVERYTHING to fullfill thier main objective; burning the world down to make a much better one afterwards. The U.S. was the most powerful nation at the time of the war, both technologically, militarily, and economically. And the Enclave pulled the strings.

well considering that a nuclear war would cause a nuclear winter, which would most likely eliminate most life on the planets surface, i doubt anyone won.

and whoever said that China is larger than the U.S., use Google next time

km mi
United States 9,629,091 3,717,813
China 9,596,960 3,705,407

a nuclear winter would be horrendous for mankind. Considering that most bombs would be dropped over flammable objects, like cities, an incredible amount of soot and ash and smoke would go into the atmosphere, and deprive the planet of sunlight, and cause extreme cold. This would cause famine for billions of people not even near the blast radius of the bombs. even a small-scale neighboring country nuclear war would cause hundreds of millions to die, some scientists say from 2-16 million per country, and thats only 50 Hiroshima bombs, and one nuclear bomb is nowadays has nearly triple the effect.

say Pakistan and India were to attack each other, only using 50 Hiroshima sized bombs, would cause an o-zone depletion, which would cause severe problems for at least a decade. sadly in this modern day 50 Hiroshima sized bombs is only 0.03% of the explosive power of the current global arsenal.

Sad days we live in, what to do with all the bombs?

I doubt any country escaped the blasts of the bombs, indirectly or directly.

Yes, it's more or less canon in terms of the general storyline, but not so much in terms of some specific details.

There was no nuclear winter in the Fallout universe, because it was not a widely held theory yet in the 1950s.

Well, we don't know how big China was by 2077 in the Fallout world.

According to the "facts" China did invade US (Alaska) and the US was supposed to free Alaska but didn't do it in time (Liberty Prime, I don't remember reading anywhere that they actually freed Alaska without using Liberty Prime). Which pops another question, why did China invade Alaska ?
Just because is the closest state to them? Didn't Russia had anything to do with that? Remember Alaska belonged to Russia, and the US "bought" it. So did the US "bought" all it's southern states (Texas, California, etc) from Mexico but anyway that's not the point.

Think about it, in order to get to Alaska, China must have passed through Russia, or do everything by sea but come on, you need supplies, and Russia is just less than 100km from Alaska. Russian's involvement remained a secret for a reason, and that it had a lot more to do with the invasion than meets the eye.

One other thing, they have records of China invading Alaska, but that's it, no records of China invading the rest of the US, but how did lots of chinese equipment, even dead soldiers ended up in the DC Wasteland ? Far away from Alaska. Somehow they managed to get there, although I haven't found any signs of actual Chinese settlements or camps or anything like it. Which tells me, that the chinese got there after the nukes.

In my very humble opinion, this is what I think happened:
- China invaded Alaska with the consent of Russia, and things started to get ugly. I still don't know WHY, WHY THE F... did they invade Alaska... was their plan to eventually invade the US and destroy the capitalism tiranny ? dunno
- Knowing how the US acts on their wars, I would say US dropped the first bomb, trying to get the chinese out of their territory, but wasn't enough.
- The counterattack devastated US, and counter-counter attack (if they got a chance) devastated China. Anyways, the nuclear winter would affect the entire world for years to come, poison the water, trees, and with that the whole feeding chain. Not to mention radiactive showers that can cover the entire world.
- The entire world is pretty f... up, but recovering very slowly. I guess the remaining "not so devastated countries" rather isolated US and China for their sins, and for their muties and ghouls :)
- I think China was "less" destroyed than US, and they tried to finish their invasion, finding nothing but desolation, radiation, mutation and death. Considering it was not worth it, they retreated. Why do I think so? I have seen chinese officers bodies and equipment, but haven't seen a single chinese vehicle. Which, thinking just logically here, tells me that they used their vehicles to get out of there.
- About the Enclave.... I think they actually pulled the first trigger. I think of them as the "government behind the government", how do they manage to have the best available technology, even now ? (vertibirds !! when I can't even find a motorcycle to wander the wastes!!! which is stupid you know? I should be able to use at least a bicycle :S, but anyway, that's for another thread :P) Anyway, I think they knew in advance all what was about to come and prepared themselves to endure, if they have a virtue, that will be patience.

And that's what I think :D
Hope there could be more background or comics or whatever for all of us fans to know about more. Is something I always think about while wandering on the wastes, lots of questions, more than answers.

Good luck Chiiiilllllllllldreennnnnnnnnnnnnnn auuuuuhhhhhh!! :coolvaultboy:

They did free it. See:

Russian's involvement remained a secret for a reason, and that it had a lot more to do with the invasion than meets the eye.

Maybe the Chinese invaded Siberia first, and then invaded Alaska from Siberia. It would explain why the relations between the Soviets and the United States were more friendly than during the Cold War.

- China invaded Alaska with the consent of Russia, and things started to get ugly. I still don't know WHY, WHY THE F... did they invade Alaska... was their plan to eventually invade the US and destroy the capitalism tiranny ? dunno

Oil. From Fallout intro:

In the 21st century, war was still waged over the resources that could be acquired. Only this time, the spoils of war were also its weapons: Petroleum and Uranium. For these resources, China would invade Alaska, the US would annex Canada, and the European Commonwealth would dissolve into quarreling, bickering nation-states, bent on controlling the last remaining resources on Earth.

I guess the remaining "not so devastated countries" rather isolated US and China for their sins, and for their muties and ghouls

China and the US weren't the only countries that were nuked. The whole world was nuked, after all developed countries released their nukes.

Again, Fallout intro:

In 2077, the storm of world war had come again. In two brief hours, most of the planet was reduced to cinders.

Fallout 2 intro:

The earth was nearly wiped clean of life. A great cleansing, an atomic spark struck by human hands, quickly raged out of control. Spears of nuclear fire rained from the skies. Continents were swallowed in flames and fell beneath the boiling oceans. Humanity was almost extinguished, their spirits becoming part of the background radiation that blanketed the earth.

All the Chinese soldiers came there before or during the Great War, not after it.

War is diplomacy by another name.

I was thinking the Chinese began their invasion of Alaska to force the US to the bargaining table in regards to the oil sharing question, assuming that Alaska was tapped out.
