I just uninstalled and reinstalled Oblivion after finding that it was producing a lot of weird noise. It didn't keep it from working... It's just terribly aggravating. From what I can tell, regular sound fx are audible, but regular music is gone. The intro music at the main menu is not there, and is replaced by this annoying ass noise.

I thought that uninstalling the game, updating both my sound card and video card drivers, as well as installing outside of the Program Files (x86) (like for Fallout 3) would help, but alas, I'm still stuck with no music and a really grating clicking noise. My other games don't do this, and I can get other sounds like music to work without a hitch, so I'm hard pressed to believe that it has anything to do with speakers or bad grounds or any of that.

Is there anything I'm missing?

Well after updating my graphics and sound drivers, turning off all my hp processes in the Task Manager and defragmenting my computer, I think I can tell it's a problem with the in game music. I also switched my default audio player to windows media player to no avail. The best I can do is turn the in game music off via the options menu. I've been getting the same problems with Fallout 3 recently as well. Nothing I've tried has made it any better or worse, and I can't think of any serious changes I've made to my computer.

Bethesda's games sometimes have issues with audio codecs. You can try deactivating the ffdshow codec for Oblivion. For windows 7 you can do this by typing "ffdshow" in the start menu search bar. Select "Audio Decoder Configuration". Select the "Directshow Control" tab, and add Oblivion.exe to the list of program exceptions.

Installing the K-Lite codec pack seems to help some people as well.

Also, I get the exact same noise when trying to play music from outside programs like itunes...

I've tried accessing my K-Lite codec pack for the audio program, but every time I click it, it won't open. The computer just continues to idle...

***Update: I used InstalledCodec to disable some codecs that I must've gotten when I downloaded the DivX player. Both issues are resolved. Thanks for the suggestion.
