icons & different styles as follows:
common
common including scarf
native grazeland style
native ashland style
buoyant armiger
redoran watch

Download: http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=6342; now available

This resource has new armor pieces, updates older pieces and adds new icons to the chitin armor set. figured as chitin is one of the more common armors in vvardenfell, there should be more styles to it like the bonemold.

you can use and distribute this as you wish.

no pieces are added to the game world, you can add them via console to test using the included .esp. the meshes will look 'odd' in nifskope, but will appear normal in-game, there is sometimes a minor glitch with the paperdoll depending on race (which happens with vanilla armor anyways)

all pieces are gamesas stock, no new textures used. any texture replacers will reflect with this armor for better or worse, the more the new textures deviate from the original design, the more odd the armor may appear.

includes new pieces:
open & masked helm
bracers
'shin guards'
variety of cuirasses & pauldrons

the download is now available!

I'm working on adding the sets in the game, but as this will alter quite a number of NPCs and containers, it may cause a lot of conflicts. It's minor, but it does add immersion seeing the different styles in their contexts.

Excellent idea! As chitin is one of the number one native resources, it'd make sense to see more desings based on it. Must check it out properly as soon as possible!

I wish there were more modded stuff that used chitin, bonemold and leather (I mean Netch/Kwama/Guar etc. leathers with that) as base materials.

that's what i'm looking into expanding, the native types of armor. I've made a distinction between the ashlander styles and the contemporary styles of chitin. I have the same plans for netch armor too.

I may even make more regional differences with the armors, like differences between ashlander tribes, or great house chitin [redoran has a chitin style helm afterall]. Of course these would be subtle, as I rather not make new textures, though I am figuring out how to accomplish some things with detail maps...

i've actually have a kwama style of armor mostly finished, my reasoning is that the kwama warriors are tough, and they could be made into an armor. but i wonder if they just use them in regular chitin, much like the shalk [another armor I made]. I would think guar leather is softer than netch, but i do see ashlanders utilizing it more than the civilized dunmer.

Well, that's excellent news. I've enjoyed the armor sets you've released so far, unfortunately haven't had the chance to test these out yet as I won't be able to access my gaming PC till Sunday or so. It'd be great to see variations on the netch armour as well!

I support wholly the idea of even more variations, it'd seem extremely likely to me that there would be various different styles out there. Maybe also a variation how heavier and more cumbersome chitin armour, say medium? Don't think it'd be heavy and still be very practical.
I'd also enjoy seeing more chitin weapons, or variations on them.

Have you noticed the clothes most ashlanders wear? They tend to be certain leathery pieces, maybe those textures could be also usable for some form of new light ashlander armor? It'd probably make sense to have ashlander tribes that dwell in the actual Ashland region to have closed helms/goggles, because of the storms. The ashlanders on the eastern coast don't seem to wear shoes much so they'd probably have shinguards instead of boots etc, etc, there seems to be enough regional distinction to merit great variety to the native armor. Would/will be a bit of a task to replace the gear, though!

I see Kwama armor very likely and I think it'd merit to be a variety of its own. To me it seemed more leathery than chitinish, but that's probably just me. The standard chitin armor seems to me to be silt strider chitin (I'd figure that's what they do with the bits they get when they carve 'em to be ridable).

chitin has always been one of my favorites. i will certainly be using this.

i always thought that there wasn't a decent medium quality light armor. take a few naps, kill a DB assasin for armor and thats it till i get some glass. however at low levels it really is too much.

on variety, do you think blighted beasts would have tougher hides? a creature spending lots of time in an ash storm ridden environment would also develop resistance. an ash guar would presumably have a slightly thicker hide. guars from the bitter coast might have weather like resistance to water. creatures that spend a lot of time in sunny environs might have tanned looking variation. or wrinkled if you are going to do detail maps. underground creatures might be more puncture resistant to avoid pokey cavern pieces and rocks.

anyhow, i like your work and am glad to see more of it.

blighted creatures would have tougher hides, but there would be too much hazard to the crafter. blight is very contagious, the cure is (relatively) expensive, and it's possible no matter how much one works the hide, it can infect the wearer. perhaps only sixth house cultists would actually make use of it. no one sane would give it a thought. it could be another project on the horizon though.

i envisioned kwama armor having a specific function of masking egg miners from the hostile kwama until the kwama become accustomed to their presence in the mines. it's physical protection isn't that great though. it would be a low level medium armor if anything else.

there's a lot of ideas that can be implemented, it's kinda fun.

Quick question - does this add forearm (elbow) pieces to the Chitin pauldrons?

with the current release it does. I've also included a knee for the greaves.

i'm uploading a new version later in the afternoon or early evening, it'll include more meshes, and another style or two.

a quick update:

I haven't uploaded the newer version yet, i'm still working on the icons. however, here's previews of the updated sets:

http://llamahunter.homestead.com/files/chitin_ashland.jpg
http://llamahunter.homestead.com/files/chitin_grazeland.jpg
http://llamahunter.homestead.com/files/chitin_common1.jpg ; set without scarf available too, the scarf cuirass fits better with the masked helm.
http://llamahunter.homestead.com/files/chitin_buoyant.jpg
http://llamahunter.homestead.com/files/chitin_redoran.jpg

new pieces include:
chitin bracers
chitin shin-guards (native grazeland 'boots') [unfortunately they still play boot sounds...]
open helm
improved mask helm, same size as open helm, scarf matches armor
fore-arm & knee pieces for armor

the ground meshes for the shin guards & bracer has gaps, which don't affect gameplay, but are visual artifacts. i'm trying to fill them within nifskope, but it's not working quite as smooth as i thought. it's only noticable at certain angles.

i'm working with detail maps to add subtle details to specific tribe and factions' armor, the ashlanders would have their tribal markings on their cuirass, the ashkhan might have other details on their armor, etc. i'm a novice with it though, kinda learning as i go.

i'll try to release the resource later in the week. but feel free to try out what i have released, and give feedback or suggestions.

these are compatible with texture replacers, as i received some messages inquiring about that in particular. depending on how close the texture replacer is to the original, the armor may appear quite different. i'd recommend darknut's armor textures, as they look great.

still doing some tweaks, so it's taking a bit longer than anticipated.

Great job, looking forward to this! :goodjob:

Though don't you think the Ashland-style one should have a scarf on the face or goggles (well, scarf/mask would probably be better) to go with the helm, because of the storms?

Anyways, I can hardly wait to see what you will be doing once this one is finished!

i'm adding pieces as i go, and it takes quite a long while. i may or may not release a version with the sets featured in-game, as it changes a LOT of npcs, containers, and leveled lists. plus i have to rebalance the values, as i haven't really given much attention to it.

I've started to add these pieces to the world, as well as replacing existing armour, it's quite a job but resources like this drive one to great lenghts. Thanks for this, quorn! :goodjob:

is that like a shalk armor? something one would find in the regions like red mountain or molag amur?

i definitely like the dark of it. only gripe about chitin is it doesn't get dirty. haha.
