Christianity in fallout

Post » Mon Jan 25, 2016 3:47 pm

So afaik Christianity didn't survive the apocalypse outside of the children of the atom, why does everyone keep yelling jesus when I chainsaw their friends? All the books in church are burned where are they getting their info.

Its afterall what the last Christian screamed when he received a chainsaw blade to the face.

Basically because it's a colloquialism. I'm an atheist and still sometimes use the phrase "Jesus Christ" as an indicator of exasperation and still say things like "Oh my god" to indicate surprise and such.

Christianity's not gone in the Fallout universe - Fallout 3's main hook is a Bible verse, there's the New Canaanites from Honest Hearts in New Vegas (postnuclear Mormons with affiliations to the Followers of the Apocalypse), and a woman from "The Faith" in Point Lookout (postnuclear Catholicism).

Christianity still very much exists. Rivet City is mostly Catholic, with Father Clifford being a priest, and Diego a Seminarian.

Likewise, Marcella is a missionary from the Abbey of the Road: a Catholic abbey. She mentions having taken communion with Father Clifford. The Abbey is mentioned as being just west of The Commonwealth, so it may have missionary missions in The Commonwealth itself, and truthfully I wouldn't be surprised if it is featured in a DLC.

And of course, there's the Mormons of New Canaan. But they're out west, and were seen in New Vegas.

The Abbey better be getting a meaty questline in a DLC. I was appalled by the lack of them in the base game.

What do you mean Christianity didn't survive? The Lone Wanderer's mother's favorite quote was from the bible. There is a church in Rivet City devoted to Christianity. And I'm fairly certain there are other examples I couldn't remember off the top of my head. It certainly isn't nearly as practiced, but there still seem to be practicing members.

Completely agree. I hope Bethesda is saving them for full treatment in a DLC, otherwise I'll be greatly disappointed.

There's a priest in a mobile as soon as you enter Diamond City.

And I've got a bullet with his name on it if he ever tries to preach the word of jebus to this wasteland wanderer ;)

They probably just didn't want it to be too overt & in-your-face. Plenty of Aetheists, Agnostics, Muslims, Hindus, etc. play this game.

It's just an expression, that's all. I'm the same way. I'm an atheist and I use the term "Jesus Christ" amd "My god" all the time. If the English language survives, so will the idioms.

You know some from the church of Atom did take sort of a militant turn, which surprised and sort of delighted me at the same time... I hope they get some Dlc Fleshing out as well.

I think its really weird how some of them are outright as hostile as raiders but others, like the ones in the Crater, are quite friendly.

Seems like some of them might have missed a memo somewhere.

The Atomites are getting nasty. The only non-hostile ones I've encountered were basking in the glow.

That's a memo I really want to read, as the complete lack of explanation from how they went from cult of silly heads to murder cult irks me.

I'm an atheist and say "oh my god" and "Jesus christ" they're just expressions. As other have pointed Christianity is alive in Fallout. Fallout 3 entire plot( both James and your are Christians) is base around the Bible and are many denominations in Fallout 3 and NV. NV honest heart dlc was all about Mormonism.

Most of you know well that we do not allow religion on the forum, and yet you try your hardest to get the thread locked.

Sorry Pluto....

Droning sound of priests voice " and so Adam blesses us"

Atom Member one looking at Atom member 2 " Hey, did he just say embrace our neighbors, or did he say Erase our neighbors. "

Atom member 2 cranking up dial on Gamma gun " I dunno, But i know what sounds a lot more fun!"

A plus of the apocalypse seems to be religion is gone as we know it, however, new beliefs have arisen . . . if only humans could evolve beyond that stage.

Fallout 3 had a priest, FNV had Mormonites...

The church of Atom or Children of Atom are not Christianity, by definition, and belief. The generalised place of worship in Diamond City is simply generic...any number of reasons for that, but I'd suggest real world ones are the thing.

The Abbey-DLC idea sounds nice. At least as long as you could also choose to stop the missionaries.

As others have stated, it's not just that it survived but if we consider the MC is related to christianity at some point in the MQ of Fo3, we can conclude christianity is canonically the true religion in fallout universe since you are never forced to be part of any other religion.

game studios like to keep neutral in these sticky philosophival/ religious debates , since they want to make the game to a wide audience as possible a overy pro real life religion theme might create too much controversy this is also the reason wh we see a equal amount of female raiders and female npc s en most of bethesda games
