Cigars/Cigarettes

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 6:05 am

After thinking about this a bit more, I think a pouch of tobacco would be kind of cool, with papers to roll your own cigarettes. It seems like it could fit in quite well with the fantasy setting. As for cigars, hmmm, I don't know. They seem too modern.

when i made this post i was thinking only of hand-rolled cigarettes. I just added cigars because in my opinion they were just as likely to be in that era, but your right about the cigars, just because the stigma that is associated with cigars. i think hand-rolled cigarettes would fit in, and not manufactured packs (which i feel most people are thinking when they read "cigarettes").

This is TES. You want cigarettes, there is Fallout 3 and New Vegas. Did cigarettes really add anything to those games? No I don't think they did, at least not in my games.

I can see them fit at Mass Effect.
They are in the future, and until then scientists found ways to make people smoke without harmfull effects.
You can read that at the latest book of the franchise, the one the Illusive Man is the protagonist.

Really? I've never heard it mentioned or wirrten anywhere that smoking is not harmfull in the Mass Effect universe, I have ready every little bit of information out there on that particular franchise, or close to it.
People in Mass Effect smoke because people smoke in real life, you have to admit, as harmfull as it may be, The Illusive Man just wouldn't have as much charm if he wasn't constantly seen with a drink and cigarette in his hand.

EDIT: Also, every character I've ever played in a game that allows it has been a smoker, granted that's not many, but still. I have done my share of virtual smoking, I have never smoked a cigarette in my life, I smoke a cigar maybe once or twice a year but that's hardly the same. So no, smoking in games does not make you smoke in real life, anyone who honestly believes that is in need of some education.

Smoke what? :D

no i don't smoke cigarettes normally. I might if i am out drinking, but i wouldn't call myself a smoker.

I've always thought the romanticized idea of cigarettes was pretty cool though.

Cigs and alcohol do go together very well.

I do smoke. I'd like to quit. I bought some patches today, but, as it turns out, I'm allergic to the adhesive. I'll have to use the gum.

Well, do you think having the ability to smoke in Skyrim would hurt your attempt to quit. And if so, would it be any worse than seeing people smoke on TV or in movies?

It was brought up earlier in the thread (months ago when this thread was created) that smoking in a video game would make people want to pick up smoking, which i disagree with, but i don't know about people who are trying to quit.

For me, it's not that cigars and cigarettes don't make sense here, but pipes just have so much more class.

My character isn't so classy, he's more the rugged/silent type. my character would look/feel ridiculous with a pipe to me.

Yes to pipes, cigarettes and cigars would feel very out of place in my opinion.

I don't think you are objectively wrong at all, but i want to point out (even though it is in the OP) that cigars and cigarettes have been around for a LONG time. Where there was tobacco (which there is in tamriel) there were often cigarettes.

even if you already knew this, I can see why someone might think they don't fit. I just wanted to point it out.

still... It doesn't feel right with my character. He's more the cowboy-type minus the hat... with lack of a better example.

I think so. I quit once before, only to start again after seeing a guy next to me at a concert smoking. I had to bum one. Seeing it in Skyrim would be worse than seeing it in TV and movies, because I will spend much more time with Skyrim than I ever would with TV and movies.

I love cigars. I even enjoy a good pipe once in a while. I wouldn't mind seeing either/both of these things included in TES. Cigarettes, while completely plausible within the realm of TES lore, somehow seem a little out of place. Anyhow, even though I think it would be a 'neat' feature, it's not very high on my list of 'wants' for the game.

Skyrim bar patron: "Excuse me, can I get a light?"
Skyrim bartender: "Sure."

:flamethrower::flamed:

Um..... thanks.

Sorry. Couldn't resist :P

LOL, yes. I like this, the irony of course being that you can learn to BREATH FIRE as the Dragonborn, so I don't think you would need a light. Or you could just use magic in general.

Another irony in that being that if the PC continued smoking so much, how would he be able to Dragonshout? Now that would be funny to see a PC get ready to fight a dragon and wheeze out Unrelenting Force....creating a tiny breeze that moves a leaf across the ground. :teehee:
Since when does any pub allow indoor smoking?

Ummm, since history.....I assume you are referring to smoking rules/standards of today and in recent years, as opposed to the entire human history. Did you also not know smoking used to be a common sight on airplanes until the 70's?

If you cut out all things in life that were bad for you, life would not be very fun. Pick your poisons let others pick theirs.

 Umm.....what? That is so stupid it's hilarious. Obviously a comment from a biased supporter of "being a j*ckass".

Yes, politicians and reporters could potentially blow this out of proportion. There are still a lot of people who believes that computer games are for kids only, and they might very well think of this as a pro-smoking campaign directed specifically towards children. It won't matter if the game is directed to an older audience. This kind of stuff is sensitive.
