Cigars/Cigarettes

The ancient aztecs and mayans smoked cigarettes and cigars... do your homework

EDIT: most of you people think these are out of place cause TES is based on medieval Europe, where they didn't have tobacco. immediately when columbus brought back tobacco from America cigars, cigarettes, and pipe smoking started in Europe

you people only think smoking pipes fit more in TES because Lord of the Rings.

The piblem is that people instantly think of MODERN cigarretes and cigars, rather than their ancient counterparts

Yes, politicians and reporters could potentially blow this out of proportion. There are still a lot of people who believes that computer games are for kids only, and they might very well think of this as a pro-smoking campaign directed specifically towards children. It won't matter if the game is directed to an older audience. This kind of stuff is sensitive.

No, if it's rated M they really can't say anything as long as the tobacco companies didn't "fund" bethesda in any way.

And like i said before. Solid Snake from Metal Gear, Metal Gear 2, Metal Gear Solid, Metal Gear Solid 2, and Metal Gear Solid 4 smoked cigarettes in ALL OF THOSE GAMES. and in each one cigarettes were an equipable item. In Metal Gear Solid 3, and the PSP Metal Gear Solids, Big Boss (the main character) smokes and can equip Cigars

There's no reason why Snake can smoke cigarettes in an M rated game and your character in Skyrim can't

I wouldn't mind if smoking was included in the game, but I probably wouldn't do it myself. Even though I'm a smoker, I absolutely despise the habit, and I think it looks ridiculous svcking on a little white stick.

I think Skooma is sufficient, maybe some kind of pipe-Skooma smoking that is illegal could add more to the feel of Skooma rather than them just being bottles of harm.

*cough* http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Morrowind:Tsiya%27s_Skooma_Pipe#Tsiya.27s_Skooma_Pipe *cough*

And for the record I don't, and never will, smoke

Well Cigars have always been basically the same, and the only difference with cigarettes is the filter and the brand name.

I think the problem is people just think "if LOtR had it it's okay, and if not it doesn't fit."

I think it would be cool if you could see the odd NPC enjoying a smoke, but I don't see the point for the PC. What's the benefit? All I can imagine is negatives - I'm a smoker myself, and I haven't found a benefit yet - my health and fatigue are ridiculously low. :P

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Only pipes.

This is -interesting- fantasy, not the half-pop garbage Warcraft.

I don't understand... cigarettes are less interesting than pipes? did warcraft have cigarettes? cigarettes and cigars are "pop"? (whatever than means)

Pipe smoking, it just gives such an authentic feel. Walking into a tavern, with people smoking pipes, it would look awesome :celebration:

Don't care much if its a player activity or not. But if smoking pipe (can't imagine a cigarette or cigar, hand rolled or not). If they were part of a larger idle animation thingy, then sure. But seems like a waste if it's only to bring in smoking.

I just can't imagine NPS's walking around in Oblivion smoking away. It wouldn't look right. There is no such thing as a "canon" fantasy world, but I've never seen any story with lore like TES where citizens where walking around with cigarettes in there mouths. Pipes... sure, those are in all kinds of fantasy tales. Regardless of how I feel about it, I doubt Bethesda will implement cigarettes into the game. They haven't up till now so why would they start with Skyrim? Besides, when Bethesda did put cigarettes into one of their games, where they did actually fit in, they were nothing but items to sell.

That's not very good logic

how did cigarettes that couldn't be smoked "fit in" to the game more so than if they could be smoked? it was just a pointless junk item, and i kinda perturbed me that you couldn't do anything with them.

How is that not good logic? Cigarettes haven't been a part of the Elder Scrolls lore in any of the previous games. Why would they put them in for Skyrim? Just because? There would probably need to be a reason to do so... I can't think of one.

And you misunderstood what I was saying. They put cigarettes in Fallout 3 and they served no purpose beyond items you could sell. It fit the world of Fallout because it was a modern, or in this case, post-modern world. It certainty fit the world of Fallout more than it would fit the world of TES. However, they chose not to implement them in any meaningful way, despite them feeling right for the game world, so I fail so see why they would do so in Skyrim.

It's not good logic because they implement new things in every game.

they would put it in because tobacco was in oblivion, so you should be able to smoke it, because that is tobacco's primary use.

Not in the Elder Scrolls world. So far, tobacco's primary use is with alchemy. Just because tobacco is smoked in our reality doesn't mean it has to in TES's. We don't have magic spells, dragons, and realms of Oblivion. TES doesn't have guns, planes, or cigarettes. Not yet at least. So far there hasn't been any reason for it to either.

Most new things add to gameplay though, especially animation intensive things

Guns and planes are made up of technologies that don't exist in the TES world (except maybe in lost dwemer technology) cigarette technology is very simple and does exist however, so you have no point there.

if tobacco wasn't meant to be tobacco from our reality than they would of named it something different.

I voted for Pipes. I wouldn't question being in a bar somewhere in Skyrim and seeing a couple of fella's sat around a table, telling stories of their past, while enjoying a pipe and a pint!

No, Mayans didn't use Tobacco for smoking, it was similair to Cocoa, valuable and a luxury, drinking chocolate or smoking a cigarette was equivalent to bathing in gold or burning cash, tobacco is called tobacco for a reference point
