Cinema Post-Apocalyptia!

Well I wasn't really sure where to post this so Mods please move it if you deem it necessary.

That said, I haven't seen this discussed yet but are you girls and guys watching any films to get ready for Fallout 4? Put down your favorites, any recommendations for folks looking for something a little different, and discuss how they get you into that Wasteland spirit!

Wow you gave me an idea, though, I'd love to find vintage film reels in the game that Bethesda has made using in-game engine or w/e and have each one be little snippets of a movie before they automatically stop due to tears, etc.

*pops in The Radfather Part 1 into movie projector*

Man 1: "...but how, Radfather... he throws mirelurk eggs at my son all day at his work!! He has no protection!! :cryvaultboy: "

Radfather: "I'ma gonna make him an armor he can't refuse... :deal: "

*film ends abruptly*

Really good post apocalyptic movies:

the day after (1983) ----- post-apoc nuclear world.

testament (1983) ----- **** must see, after ''THREADS (1984). Another realistic look of a post-apoc nuclear world.

the quiet earth (1985) ---- ***** must see, a man is alone on earth after ''project flashlight'' which is... probably some kind of governement project like the manhattan project, that made everyone disappear.

threads (1984) -realistic look at nuclear war- ----- ****TOTALLY MUST SEE if you want to feel what really IS a post-nuclear war world, without power armor. Best one to get a feel for a real nuclear fallout. Slow to begin but worth it **********

Colossus - the forbin project (1970) -----******about nuclear war, two supercomputers taking over the world during the cold war. America VS russia... *must see

Fail-safe (1964) -----****** american pilots are ordered to nuke moscow during the cold war... but the order was an error. This may lead to nuclear war. *must see

letters from a dead man (Pisma myortvogo cheloveka (1986)). ------ I would say *must see, if you, again, really want to feel what is the post-apoc nuclear world. Subtitles.

a boy and his dog (1975) ---- kinda weird, but still very good. A boy and his dog living in a post-apoc ''mad max'' world

Post-apoc, but not directly related to the nuclear war:

the last man on earth (1964) ------ everyone turned zombie, with only one man that still is normal, living in his house, living a everyday very stressful survival life. post-apoc feel.

the omega man (1971) ------ remake of the above, both are good.

28 days later (2002) ---- virus post-apocalyptic, very good imo

28 weeks later (2007) ---- follow-up of above

the day of the triffids (1981) ----- everyone turns blind after a ''meteor shower''... feels like a post-apoc world

the divide (2011) ---- a few survivors of a nuclear attack are hidding in a basemant. This is the only place you will see in this movie, with all the tension that goes with it.

On the beach is a tad on the old side, but is pretty great. The Divide shows what a group of people will do when a nuke has hit the city, and they get trapped in a confined space with eachother... and These last hours is about the last few hours before the end reaches Australia, and what one man does with that time. They all are pretty great.

Not watching anything here, but, I think it would be really super awesome if there were some working televisions in the Post-War Boston Wasteland, and some of the old 1950s and 1960s films that might fit the atmosphere get played on the little tube, with commercial breaks to stop in at the Memory Den, sponsored edifices in Diamond City, or promoting services and goods from other locations around the Boston Wasteland, perhaps even a promotional bit of propaganda from The Brotherhood requesting viewers to turn in interesting technologies they find for a reward, or something.

Old pre-television radio shows that were popular drama outlets before most people had televisions would also be fun to hear over the radio, like the adventures of Flash Gordon or other such similar titles.

http://www.oldradioworld.com/shows/Flash_Gordon.php

Video Compression and file size could be smallish for viewing on old grainy in-game televisions, and audio quality for the radio shows wouldn't need be super either.

Hmm. I smell a mod coming on :)

I think we may get a few holotapes of possibly short films or comercials, to go along with the game holotapes.

I like this idea. It could be a quest for a crazy incurable collector of old films who runs a wasteland cinema! That would be a cool mod! I could see a segment of "Them", the 50's version of "War of the Worlds", or an old western playing on a TV somewhere in the wastes.Awesome, thanks I'll check them out!

Some old Ramond Chandler style, dike Tracy-esque Detective Noir stories, radio drama, and film segments could be worthwhile material for an entire Mystery Private Eye Gumshoe quest mod.

New Vegas Bounties I & II were pretty fun, and, another flavor of that kind of detective work could be solving crimes the old Trench-coat, suit, and Fedora way.

I'm sure there's tons of material available to pull from in constructing Detective jobs starting off where a Breathy archetype heroine cliche'd to the nines begs your help and faints from all the excitement, and many of the other old tropes that lead in to a twisty investigation.

You could even have, ro set up a Private Eye office or some other fun.

I wouldn't suggest something in the vein of Angel Heart, as THAT kind of missing person's case might be difficult to work into the whole character story background, but, there's certainly possibilities for many of the other well established mystery thriller stories from the golden age of radio drama.

As to War of the Worlds; don't forget that it was initially broadcast as a radio show, and, it was broadcast without warning or disclaimer. Lots of people thought it was a real actual invasion from outer space. People fled to the hills. People went suicidal. Folks panicked.

A quest mod with that could tie in to the radio broadcast, and the film as "Historical" events in the game, though some new models might have to get made unless there's already aliens in the game, or if someone wanted to make different aliens.

:)

Just to sell the flavor- The Soundrack has Motorhead and Lemmy himslef makes a cameo (Iggy Pop is in it too).
But the earth is war torn- radiation everywhere, and this guy is scavenging in the wastes, where he finds a present for his lady.
A piece of Hardware (she's an artist who works with metal sculptures/welding)
Then things happen.

I'd Reeeeaaaaaaly like to see Human Highway, but it's was only ever put out on a limited VHS run.

I do remember hearing about the WotW being broadcast as radio show. We chuckle now but ol' Orson sure caused quite a bit of trouble! I really dig your idea for the mid, it sounds perfect given the setting. Gee, if this thread were going to turn into a mod thread for F4 I wish it hadn't been moved...
