Circus?

Post » Wed Apr 28, 2010 5:07 pm

Don't know why I thought of it, but has anyone ever done a circus mod for Morrowind? I'm not talking Ringling Bros, I'm talking about the odd caravan type that has beasts, freaks, and the few odd quests. You know, B-movie stuff. No big tents and traqezes. Just a wandering, gypsy-ish caravan. I don't recall seeing one, so I just thought I'd post this as kind of an idea in case anyone wanted to run with it.

I'm not sure, but I'd love to work on it as an addition to the Traveling Merchants mod. If anybody wants to pick up this project, I'd love to make some sideshow freaks.

That is probably the perfect mod to add it to. You could add fortune tellers, fire-eaters, etc. Catch the escaped animal, carny who stole the cash box type quests added in. Maybe give the whole thing some dark backstory, like Something Wicked This Way Comes. The Carnival of Lost Souls. Sorry, just typing out ideas in random disorder. I volunteer Princess Stomper.

It certainly could have quite a bit of potential, but even without quests, this would be extremely entertaining and fit right in with Vvardenfell's cruel nature.

I could certainly see some very twisted visages meshing in with the entire feel of the game. Maybe have a man who's suffering from Corprus, large, grotesque lumps of mad, twisted flesh growing from him, yet he's not yet insane. A two-headed Guar! Oh, my, the possibilities are endless. Maybe a woman who can conjure up Ancestral Ghosts and make them fight to the death. I think the circus would fit in very will around the Bitter Coast. Also, I believe it is possible to attach a script to an activator (say, the wagon that leads the circus around) to make it start to thunderstorm every time you near the circus. Would certainly add to the 'creepiness' factor. Lightening flashes lighting up all the ghoulish freaks faces! :D

Actually, come to think of it... Besides dialogue, which I'm horrible at, I wouldn't mind making this on my own. If I create the wagon, throw in a few freaks, then attach a script similar to the Traveling Merchants, is there anybody who would be willing to finish the job with some good dialogue and maybe a quest or two?

Well, just out of curiosity, and to keep this thread rolling, has anyone ever done a wagon/cage mesh before, to keep animals caged in? Hmmm, what are some other meshes that might prove useful? I think I've seen covered wagons somewhere, and I think I've seen guars that pull wagons, so those would be a good starting place. Maybe some animals imported from other places, not native to Vvardenfell. I've also seen crystal balls and some types games and gambling. Maybe someone could rig up games of chance for a prize. Any lion tamers about? I thought I saw someone had animated a whip somewhere, although I could be mistaken. What else? Maybe an actual wooden "house" wagon, like the travelling (heh, I want to say snakeoil salesman, but I don't think that's right) guy who would be the wizard from the Wizard of Oz. The guy in Kansas, when Dorothy ran away. I seem to remember he lived in a little house on wheels, so to speak. Sorry, am I rambling?

Eh, Matthew beat me to the wagon/cage idea.

I think I've also seen a mod where people appear at different times around Vvardenfell. I don't think it was Travelling Merchants (it could have been) but it might have been similar. It was kind of like a rotating schedule. At some point in time, they might be in Seyda Neen. At another, in Vivec. That would be cool if someone could figure out how to move the circus around like that.

Is it possible to create new heads with missing teeth/really messed up teeth? Maybe make them brown and rotting, and also dirty/scar up the faces of the carnival crew...

No, actually that's all very good. Forgive me if I'm mistaken, but aren't you a modeler? I don't think there's a wagon/cage mesh around, so if you could provide that, that could be good. Also, maybe we could use some of the creatures from TR to make the whole thing more appealing to purists. I think that if we're going to put all of this in, though, it would make more sense to have multiple caravans with different features in various regions. Each caravan would advertise for the others, so seeing all there is to see becomes sort of a quest in itself. I personally don't think the gambling feature would work that well if this is a traveling circus, but that's just my opinion. I also remember the whip mesh you're talking about, but I don't think I ever saw it actually in action. If people could start posting resources and the like of things that could prove useful, that would be great.

I've done things such as this before, so that won't be a big deal. The crew will definitely be a messy bunch, probably Dark Elf considering their promotion of captivity.

I've seen a pic, done by Westly I believe, that had a female face with a rather large scar around her eye. Probably yesterday while I was looking through mods. I think it was in Alakazars Lamp. I could be wrong. I would think its also possible to alter the teeth.

Any hunchback mods? Can't have a circus without a hunchback.

I can do models. I'm still much better in SolidWorks, which I've decided really doesn't translate too well into Morrowind, but I might be willing to give this a shot in Max. Before what little skills I have in it get rusty and disappear completely. I'm thinking a couple of different types of wagons. One for the cages, with openable doors. The other some type of "home" that the carnys live in. But if anyone else feels like doing it, be my guest. It make take me some time (and about ten different attempts) to get it right. I might even be willing to throw in a few of the other models I've done in Max, i.e. a couple of weapons, since Eldanorcara seems to be going nowhere fast.

Oops, sorry, two in a row.

Sounds like a plan to me; I'll take anything you have to offer and use it as well as I can. I'm not too sure what the difference is between Max and SolidWorks is, but I apologize if you prefer the one that doesn't import well. If we can find somebody else, that'd be fine by me. What I'm worried about right now, though, is the dialogue.

Sounds like a good idea! :)
While I'm pestering, and just throwing my ideas out there, why not add a few more?

I think the idea of different regional ones is excellent. They can each carry oddities and/or fauna from the respective region. And, think of the possibilities of the Sheogorad region carnival? Lots of obscure places and things there. I remember the whip and flail animated weapons. If I can track it down, the whip actually worked exceptionally well. I also seem to recall a ring-leader type coat that was all smudged up, and it had a cigar burn or the like in it somewhere. Seems rather fitting. I think, aside from the creepiness factor, you can do a lot with the freaks in it, too. Say, for example, in the Ascadian Isles region, there is a raving mad woman who rambles on and on about weird Tribunal-like things.

'The sixth dagger, the solace-spoke! Colored from the veins of the gods! His mercy and His Mercy alike, akin to the fabrication of the Magical Worm! The Hermaphrodite thrice-blessed! Two-in-Three-is-Six!'

And then you could throw a cool quest in there of finding an ebony dagger ('colored from the veins of the gods') with a neat little enchantment on it.

Gee, the possibilities are endless!

Just found that pic online of a model. That's perfect. Maybe I will take a shot at it.

SolidWorks does import over to Max, but the polygons are in complete disarray. No rhyme or reason. And it tends to translate as high poly, so Max would be the way to go. Or Blender, etc. I've decided that a general rule of thumb is that, whatever the polycount would be in Max, Blender, etc., its roughly 5-10 times greater in SolidWorks, especially when you do round shapes of any kind (cylinders, spheres, fillets).

As for dialogue, I think someone will step up. I still volunteer Princess Stomper.

Ah, that would be perfect. If you give me a base texture with what you create, I can probably come up with a way to make it look more like it's been traveling through the mud and muck of the Bitter Coast. And I agree; Princess Stomper would be great.

Uhm, yeah. Texturing? UVMapping? Not so much. Call me a work in progress on that. But I'm sure we can find someone who can.

I don't know if it's necessary for me to post this link, but http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=1693 is the whip mod that I think you were looking for.

http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=3323 has a cage in it made by Dongle. And http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=1196 has a smaller birdcage, might be too small though...

Just thought I'd start a list of different types of people normally associated with a circus in case it sparked someone's interest to try a few new animations or somesuch:

Stiltwalkers (no, not silt striders)
Siamese twins
Clowns/jugglers
Organ Grinder
Tattooed man
Snake Charmer
Mime
Firebreather/eater
Fortune teller
Bearded Lady
Strongman
Ringmaster
Lion tamer
Fat lady
Uni-cyclists

Feel free to add to the list or point out mods that may already contain said persons/potential animation uses.

Instead of a snake charmer, you could have a cliff racer charmer.

Albinos.

Half breed mer-jiit / mer-gonians (these would certainly be the lowliest spectacle of depravity).

How 'bout an old telvanni mage who's been shunned because of his mad experiments specializing in creating bizarre constructs or atronachs - Melchior Dahrk made some neat mushroom creature resources which might fit the bill.

Intriguing idea! :lightbulb:

It seems to be from Glory Road II, Awakening "The sad Tale of Corporal Gabriel and the Steam Calliope"

wasn't there a carnival in Princess's mod for Mournhold Expanded?
