5 cities and 130 dungeons?

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 11:35 pm

Just wondering what this means, how big will they be? Will there be other smaller towns to visit similar to Morrowind? What is the capitol?

It means just what it says. All we know is that there are five major cities of undetermined sizes, and that there are 130 dungeons which we don't know the size to either. there basically isn't enough information released to answer your question, but i hope there will be minor cities, towns, and villages like in morrowind.

EDIT: oh sorry and i don't know the current capital, but i think they've announced it somewhere...

Actually, I believe the article didn't say 130 dungeons - it said over 130 places of interest including dungeons. If the game world is of similar size as Oblivion's, I'd guess the cities are as well. Smaller towns may be included in those 130, too.

If the game world is the same size as Oblivion, that would mean the cities would be considerably LARGER than those in Oblivion. Less cities, smaller province, and less dungeons/places of interest, means things will be more spread out (aka, not cramped) and cities will be larger.

Also, they used the term "massive" to describe the cities.

Yeah, pretty much. Besides, we don't want it too cluttered with stuff, leave some space for us modders :P I need a good place to set up my Tavern "The Spotted owl" :hehe:

Are those confirmed to be the 5 major cities or is it merely speculation on your part? Was kind of hoping Winterhold would be one of the bigger cities.

We've seen a map featuring all of them, so I'd say those are confirmed.

I think it says on the uesp wiki that winterhold is one of the largest cities in skyrim, but also that the dunmer are always trying to claim the city to be theirs.

I'm sure its gonna be an interesting point of interest.

Sounds good to me. :celebrate: Though I'm not a huge fan of 'massive' cities myself, I do hope they make them at least feel unique. I never quite got the same vibe from the cities in Oblivion as I did from those in Morrowind.

Solitude was the capital at the time of morrowind, but given the conflict, changing political landscape and 200 years since oblivion quite a bit could have changed.

Did anyone else notice that Solitude was labeled with a red "EMPIRE" while Windhelm was labeled with a red "REBELS"?

As long as the cities are comparable to New Sheoth (Shivering Isles capital city). I spent so much time just in Crucible, and never spent too much time in Bliss (I loved Crucible way too much!). So if they can just get a proper layout, proper characters, and proper quests into each city to make them feel alive and unique, I'll be happy.

Crucible wasn't even that big, AT ALL, and it's still by far my favorite place in all of Oblivion/Shivering Isles.

I certainly hope so, from what I have read of it it sounds like one of the more interesting places in Skyrim.

yeah, the cities in Daggerfall were definitely massive, but they were boring... Morrowind had pretty small cities, but many of them had something indescribable... personality maybe.
on the other hand vivec was pretty big, and it was kind of a boring place to travel through, although it still had its charm

Oblivion cities had little charm. I, however, liked Anvil, but all the other cities seemed boring to me.

Agreed. Layout, architectural design, characters, how the place ties in with the surrounding area and overall world, those points are far more important than just the size. That's what makes a city or town come alive.

Ja Vivec was huge, as was Cyrodill city. Basically the last two massive cities we've had and both just didn't do it for me. They felt cumbersome to travel and uninspiring to spend much time in. Compare Vivec to Suran, and I'd pick Suran any time. It felt more natural and like a real town. Of couse, they also had the only nudie bar.. :hubbahubba:

It's difficult to have a definitive capital during civil war. There'll probably be two major cities competing for that title.

True. I wonder if there's gonna be a definitive north and south (or east and west) thing going on.

And now imagine Vivec with dynamic NPCs. Vivecs archtitecture was great but with static NPCs it just seemed dead.

Interpreting the art video map the capital city of the rebels will be Windhelm and the capital of the Empire supporters will be Solitude.

130 dungeons is more than enough. In oblivion I wasn't even close to visit each one of it's dungeons. Quality over quantity all the way! 5 bigger cities is enough as long as there are lots of things in them to do and smaller settlements are dotted here and there. In MW there were only 4 bigger cities (Vivec, Balmora, Ald-ruhn and Sadrith Mora) and it was enough.

5 Cities:

Markarth
Solitude
Windhelm
Whiterun
Riften

Almost certain that Markarth isn't a city. For one the image we got given in Game Informer looks like a dungeon if anything. Also its name doesn't appear in the 'big' font that the rest of the cities have.
