Cities: Destruction and Reconstruction?

Post » Sat Sep 18, 2010 4:37 pm

Hello to you all.

I do not think the subject has been mentioned, and the result will be very speculative.

On several occasions, we read that dragons could destroy cities and villages ... But at what level:
destruction of walls and some houses / buildings.
Will the destruction of the site mean a deletion of quests that you could find?
Of course we do not know much yet ...

What are your expectations regarding this topic?
And do you think (hope) we will be able to rebuild some or all of the sites destroyed by the dragons?

Good Thinking to you all!

P.S. sorry if there are errors in my english :banghead:

I don't really have high hopes for total destruction of towns, much less unscripted. I hope its done better than Eternal Burning Kavatch though. town resources can be destroyed re-routing the apparent trade/supply routes town has with other locations to sustain itself, implying a much larger and more important economy system.
The nords version of Alduins rauaging the land is a great wall of fire consuming everything so who knows.

Im not expecting entire building to be destroyable, and much wouldnt be the case if the game still runs on Cells and seperate interiors and exteriors.

I do pine for an upgrade to my old Morrowind days of taking out the entirety of Balmora with a few well placed super fireballs :obliviongate: :mohawk: :chaos:

YES! I would love to have something like this. Or able to plain BUILD a city. Just like in the Bloodmoon expansion for morrowind, you helped Build the City Raven Rock, helped deal with creatures and stuff like that. It was my favorite part about the expansion.

Hi, hello, halo.

I just read someplace else that weather has a strong effect, that one town is built into a cliff face.
Dragons are not scripted to attack, rather may just drop in, so my guess is that complete destruction may be possible.

Which I find makes me both happy and nervous.

Happy as a RPG'er, that even things outside of my player actions can go spectaculary wrong in a dramatic sense.
Nervous that the OCD drive in every gamer may get shafted with this, to some extent.

The happy wins out by a large margin however.

I always thought it would be a cool idea, I've thought about it since playing Bloodmoon several years ago. I don't see how it would be very hard for the PC version since it's supposed to have some sort of construction set built in. But for those of us who have lousy computers, and / or those of us with the console versions: it would be nice to see some sort of design platform, even if it were grossly simplified. I think the idea would be cool.

I just thought of Assassins Creed II, how you kind of maintain and build up your home city... Maybe something like that even, with a little bit of drag and drop placement for the buildings and such, perhaps?
Just a thought.

I do hope that if dragons swoop down upon cities and bust them up; the cities will be rebuilt over time (with people actually working on rebuilding it). I'd hate to be level 50 and see every city in ruins because nobody bothers to rebuild anything (think Kvatch).

I think that dynamic cities with the possibility of homes and business (or even whole parts of towns) being destroyed and rebuilt add much to the immersion of the game. I'm not sure if I'd like randomly roaming dragons to flatten whole parts of cities unless it were quite rare...and if it's so rare why not make it scripted? But I do like the idea of it happening however it occurs.

I like the idea of cities growing and shrinking in general. If I clear out a bunch of baddies from groves, caves, and whatnot in the area, I'd like to see the shops selling more and nicer wares as their buisness is going better. After a dragon attach with the town destroyed, the merchants are still set up in tents, but they have very basic gear and foods until the town is reconstructed.

Similarly, quests should be affected by an attack. Say a magistrate generally offers 4 quests: 1st take care of the gang in town, 2nd contact the neighboring farmers and findout why their grain shipments have been shrinking (and resolve their problem of course), 3rd clear the trolls out the quarry so we can get stone to make a new mill to fit all the grain we're now getting. If half a town were crushed, then the magistrate should ask me to clear the trolls out the quarry first to allow the rebuilding effort to proceed.

Do you know how many times I wanted create an evil powerful sorceror, who uses his power to destroy cities/villages? I wonder if this could now be possible if dragons can destroy?

This is something I have asked myself too.

It would be really cool if people actually died, and it would sure make the world more alive and make me replay the game also.

It would be kind of like in Star Control 2, where some quests would be denied because of wars.

But I guess they want to please the completionists :P !

I'd rather not have an ever-burning Kavatch and Bruma mage's guild.

also, maybe that guild is still on fire...

you know, a USEFUL DLC would have been Kavatch restored, giving you the oppurtunity to aid in its reconstruction. instead we fight some ancient enemy and restore an old clerical order, dance with a Deadric God of Madness, and inherite various homes to our name....

all while kavatch burns.

Yeah I always felt it was kind of weird to retake the keep and then just leave and not rebuild and still be called The Hero of Kavtch.

It is especially weird that the city is still a pile of rubble after you go through a year in game. <_<

I think that idea would be a really good mechanic to see in the game but the question to me is, "Would it be practical to put it in the game?"
I just don't think that it would make much sense to put it in the game and might take away from something that could have the potential to make the game shine.

Excellent Mod though

PS: You type just fine :ooo:

Its been confirmed that NPC's are able to chope wood, farm etc. perhaps it would be a way to earn gold. "Hey Dovahkiin, ill pay you 500 gold in exchange for "X" amount of this resource" I hated always struggling to obtain addequate funds to purchase those ridiculously priced items. (Aegis of Apocalypse, that staff in Rindeer's staves" and so on)

Yes I would, but if I decide not to help (If I dont have money or just dont want to) I want the cities' economy to plummet and will have to work their way up via travelling merchants (I hope there are travelling merchants that buy and sell to merchants)

NPCs now how jobs, so I quess they could *Radiantly* rebuild the city, as they have all the resources they need such as the mill for wooden material.

I was just thinking it would be coold to enter a town where a dragon had just attacked where some of the houses would be a bit destroyed, seeing NPCs react in all sorts of way and the some of them hard at work to reconstruct the buildings. After all, they can't just leave them that way, that would be stupid.

Edit: We should also be able to help :)

I'm hoping for at least some moderate building damage. If there is a dragon attack and it shoots Fire at a building, if that building just burned with no damage, it would almost kill the moment. I fear that it might not be possible for Bethesda due to more important things to be worked on, or with interior cells, it might be too difficult to implement.
