Morrowind had only 3 real "major cities". "5 massive cities" means nothing.

Solitude has to be one because of its financial prowess.
Winterhold has to be one because of hte Ysmir collective and College of Winterhold
Dawnstar because of its political significance

annnnnd take your pick at the other 2

I spotted these 5 cities in my copy of Game Informer: Windhelm, Whiterun, Riften, Falkreath, and Markarth Side.

I'm guessing the other 3 cities of the North are either in ruins, or at least rendered into smaller settlements after being torn apart in civil war.

I actually wanted to write 4, but then I thought about how small Sadrith Mora was.

It has been over 200 years since our last info of Skyrim, politics and war will likely have changed quite a bit.

What are the other 3 cities you consider a major city?

Morrowind had 3 Major cities???

Ald'ruhn*
Balmora*
Ebonheart
Sadrith Mora
Wolverine Hall*
Vivec*
Caldera
Gnisis
Maar Gan
Molag Mar
Pelagiad
Suran
Tel Mora
Dagon Fel
Tel Aruhn
Khuul
Seyda Neen
...and more

And plenty more complete settlements not to mention the imperial forts, the wizard towers, ashlander camps ect.. ect..

*these cities all have multiple guilds in them , I'm not sure how you cant count only 3 major cities.

Just that they exist doesn't mean that they will be massive. From their locations and what I know about them I guess Solitude, Dawnstar, Winterhold, Markarth Side and Falkreath are probably the cities that will be massive.

Edit: About the Morrowind cities, I think that only Vivec, Ald'ruhn and Balmora were large cities. The other were like smaller towns, and there were lots of them.

I am guessing that there will be 5 huge cities, probably even larger than the cities in Oblivion and filled with more content. Until we see an updated map of Skyrim we cannot know where the new borders are (200 years have passes, so borders have likely changed as well), but the cities near the coast are probably more likely. There will probably be many smaller villages between the cities, like the settlements in the recent Fallout games, so any number of the cities listed could be included just not featured as the main cities of the game.

You're probably right. After all, the map in the magazine is cut off so that you can't see the far North of Skyrim, where those other three cities would be.

For me, the more cities and settlements, the merrier. I hope they all make the cut, and I would like to see destroyed places get rebuilt, but I'm not expecting that and I won't be disappointed if it doesn't happen.

The three other cities may be smaller (or maybe destroyed like Kvatch ). Don't expect them to come in DLCs.

That's what I'm expecting. There are two different ways to obliterate a city. The first is to imagine a horror verson of How To Train Your Dragon. A bunch of dragons sweep down and blast everyone to hell. The second plausible way to destroy three cities is to remember that there's a civil war going on in Skyrim.

Edit: About the Morrowind cities, I think that only Vivec, Ald'ruhn and Balmora were large cities. The other were like smaller towns, and there were lots of them.

There are three great houses represented on Vvardenfell: Hlaalu, Redoran, and Telvanni. Each one has an associated major city: Balmore, Ald'ruhn, Sadrith Mora. Then there is of course Vivec. During Tribunal, they added Mournhold, thus bringing the total number up to 5.

The first page of the article shows part of the map of Skyrim in the background. The northernmost part of Skyrim is cut off though, so the five cities that appear on the map may not actually be the five major cities.

Is that the in game map or a cut and paste of skyrim from any regular tamriel map?

Well OB had one massive city

And it also had a bunch of smaller ones that were still of good size.

Now imagine 5 imperial cities being better/larger/more dense than IC. Then imagine the remaining cities as being the size of Anvil, Chorrol, Skingrad, Bravil, Leyawiin, Bruma, or Cheydinhal with more complexity to them. I wouldn't be surprised if one or two were destroyed or torn in half by war though.

The image in the mag is based on http://www.imperial-library.info/content/empire-tamriel-zeph and the mag show more of Cyrodiil than Skyrim. The map was created for Oblivion.

The Pocket Guide to the Empire, 1st ed, have a different http://www.imperial-library.info/content/pocket-guide-empire-first-edition-skyrim. We can see where the Reach is on that map too (mentioned in the mag).

Maybe there will be 5 massive cities, but the other ones will be still in the game just more townish than cities.

This hopefully...
