Citizens recognizing you if you were famous...HOW!?!?

we don't even know if they had a basic printing press.

very familiar with Oblivion

I only thought it was weird regarding skills... not really titles, since word spreads

Also keep in mind posters are hand-drawn in Tamriel, assuming there are no cameras.
I also doubt there would be a bunch of Leonardo da Vincis running about; even if... you would need to have a really long close-up stare to copy a man's face, not just a quick glance of a man getting pwned by a dragon

Obviously it's the AI programing. Once you reach a certain point, new dialoges are unlocked for different NPC's. "Hey your the hero of Kvatch" or "It has been an honor to speak to you, Champion".

Ok guys. I really think you're delving into something a little too deeply that wasn't intended to be broken down so much.
It's just a simple mechanic. You start the game, no one knows who you are. At the end of the game, you've done spectacular things, saved villages, and killed Demi-gods. People now recognize you and /gasp in your presence.
...it's really as simple as that. I don't think Bethesda intended for this level of thought process and theorizing on how it's done on something so miniscule.

well, i think the idea about how you can be recognized by your skills is that the better you improve the skills the more they would impact your physical appearance or characteristics. like alchemy for example, you have to make alot of potions to become a master and its common sense that you would smell of ingrediants that you used. same with the other skills. the weakest one imo is sneak, if some one was truely a master of sneak they would not look suscpicous (sp) they would be so sneaky that you would never notice them to begin with. but other than that = what I already said.

Ah but there are no printing presses in their office, is there? But if you would like a rebuttal, I do have one. http://www.ucalgary.ca/applied_history/tutor/endmiddle/bluedot/print.html. The first paragraph is of the most relevance.

To understand the importance of the printing press, it is necessary to understand that before the printing press virtually every book and every document was a manuscript. Written by hand, the production of even a single page was an arduous and time-consuming task. Books were expensive and only very popular texts of universal appeal were likely to be copied. Wood-cut printing had been in use in Europe since the twelfth century but, because a new block had to be carved in reverse for each page, few works justified the intensity of labour required for publication by this method and experienced scribes could often complete a text more quickly and at a lower cost. Large volumes of religious pictures and playing cards were the most common items produced by wood-cut printing.

That being said, infamous people like the Grey Fox and famous people like the Hero of Kvatch would probably warrant having things printed via Wood-cut about them.

Edit: @Shinovakhiin: Agreed, it was really just a perk for having done something in the game, just like how an achievement tells other players what things you have done.

I do agree it was strange when they recognized you for a specific skill. I thought it strange that someone would walk up to me and say "You're a sneaky looking sort." Just cause I was a Redguard. Racist mother****ers...

 It's better than having NPCs speaking Tagalog to my Argonian... In all seriousness though, there were a lot of issues with NPCs recognizing things that they shouldn't know and not acknowledging things that they probably should know.

Reminds me of A Game of Thrones where no matter how infamous someone was, no one seemed to know anyone's faces, thus why none of Robert's illegitimate kids ever got discovered by those except people who knew Robert.

What was weirder was hearing a passing NPC say "You look skilled in alteration."

Yeah, I mean...you can tell if someone is strong by their muscles, but when someone tells me "You look like you're skilled in alchemy" I don't even...wait, was he calling me a junkie?

Yeah, like when someone would say "You look like quite the marksman!"
Like uh, what? What exactly does that entail lmao? What does a "marksman" look like? o.o

Heh. The first time I was recognised as the 'Hero of Kvatch!', I was wearing the magical light cuirass you get from finishing that quest. So to me, it didn't seem very odd at all, for a little while I even wondered if wearing that piece of armour was what triggered the recognition. Its not really hard to think of why people might recognise you as a certain famous person. The Black Horse courier does carry news all over the province, and presumably has sketch artists.

I would love to see a more improved system in Skyrim though, where you have to build your reputation in different areas of the province, and can go unnoticed by wearing a mask, helmet or hood. Reputation is one of the best tools for making you feel like a genuine hero/villain, and it would be great to see it slowly grow and spread over the province as you move through the game. Key word being slowly. I don't want to save a farmer's daughter in some regional area of the map, and have people mention it in passing in the capital ten minutes later.

If someone is a hero, like in Oblivion... word spreads quickly. Stories are told. People would have to be pretty daft to not recognize a hero of that stature. I think it worked fine.

Exactly this. There were some of these that just didn't make sense to me.

"Look at the muscles on you" was the only one that I really thought was legit.

considering that most of my characters were stealthy thieves or assassin types.........its not good when everyone recognizes you. i wish they would get rid of that part or limit it to a handful of people who are specifically involved with the quest. i dont want every person on the street or in the tavern to know who i am its really immersion breaking.

They have never seen me before yet they say..."hey, its you... the hero of Kvatch!!!"

People shouldn't recognize you like this; they should hear stories and discuss these current events, but not spot you fifty yards away. Actually, should you tell someone you are the Champion of Cyrodiil, they should be in disbelief and possibly just laugh at you.

Remember, there are no TVs and no photographs.

Did anyone else find this wierd?

They know it because you are that guy with his face on the black horse courier wearing that damn daedric armor that lives in the rosethorn hall

HAHAHA! That seriously happened?

I just wish people wouldn't recognise me all the time and wouldn't constantly stop and make the same darn comments about how great I am.

haha yes that was weird. I'd much prefer them to make comments about what can be seen, such as my clothes, constitution and weapons.

Strange how you're called a sneaky looking sort when your sneak skill is high, when a high sneak skill is supposed to mean that you can sneak around without being noticed. :P
