Citizens recognizing you if you were famous...HOW!?!?

Post » Fri Oct 22, 2010 12:10 am

They have never seen me before yet they say..."hey, its you... the hero of Kvatch!!!"

People shouldn't recognize you like this; they should hear stories and discuss these current events, but not spot you fifty yards away. Actually, should you tell someone you are the Champion of Cyrodiil, they should be in disbelief and possibly just laugh at you.

Remember, there are no TVs and no photographs.

Did anyone else find this wierd?

I did. Sometimes I liked it, I mean who doesn't like to be praised? But honestly it would be nice if you could tell people.

What was weirder was hearing a passing NPC say "You look skilled in alteration."

Annoyed me as hell in OB!

Pro for that! This and the way the whole social status your character had from the beginning: Everybody greets you... You should be able to walk the cities with noone caring about your business until you ask them.

Hope they do it better this time

Well, they do have artists and the Black Horse Courier in Cyrodiil. Someone could've drawn your character and then had it spread around to Cyrodiil.

considering that most of my characters were stealthy thieves or assassin types.........its not good when everyone recognizes you. i wish they would get rid of that part or limit it to a handful of people who are specifically involved with the quest. i dont want every person on the street or in the tavern to know who i am its really immersion breaking.

Well, Dagon wasn't exactly a small guy. I'm positive that SOMEONE saw your deeds in the battle and wrote and painted about it.

Well, I never got that copy from the Black Horse Courrier, but that would've been cool to add as one of the copies.

they did have sketchings as seen in the capitol city (omg I can't remember what the name was!) and the would have been descriptions spread by rumor, people were not incapable of recognizing descriptions of other people in actual historic times that are simular to that of tamerial. its a lost human art, that along with being able to memorize an entire book word for word.

I've never met Brad Pitt in real life, but if I see Brad Pitt in real life for the first time, I'm going to know it's him.
Why? Fame.
Your characters in Morrowind and Oblivion were famous. I don't see how that's any different.
Working as intended, IMO.

They have posters of the Gray Fox so knowing what you look like isn't unbelievable.

This is the worst argument I have ever seen. Of COURSE you would you've seen him in movies and on TV. This is a time with nothing other than couriers for spreading info to the masses. No pictures, no film, we don't even know if they had a basic printing press.

I do agree it was strange when they recognized you for a specific skill. I thought it strange that someone would walk up to me and say "You're a sneaky looking sort." Just cause I was a Redguard. Racist mother****ers...

Are you even being serious right now? Have you even played Oblivion? Done the Thieves guild? Have you even walked in the Imperial City? There are posters everywhere.
Also, you don't have to see someone on TV to know who they are via description. Word of mouth goes a long way. And yes, people made posters and pictures of people.
Seriously, I can't even tell if you're being serious or not with how you replied to what I said, it was that ludicrous.

Calm down. I'm just saying using a movie star is not a good example for this. You never said anything about the fact that there was the posters in your previous post (yes I am very familiar with Oblivion, having released a number of mods for it, I know it inside and out). But posters can still be hand drawn and detailed repeatedly, that is how they did things in a time before technology. If you wanted a few pictures of someone a long time ago each one would be hand done.

I apologize if I offended you but I was merely saying using a person made famous by TV is not a good example when we talk about a place or time without TV. If you had referenced famous criminals like Jack the Ripper and how they used sketches to post information on him it would have made more sense to me.

I'm pretty sure the knight looking guy with full enchanted daedric armor and a giant sword is pretty recognizable.

Jack the ripper wore a top hat naturally, see, even I know what he looks like.

You know what he looks like (and would recognize him) because you have probably seen him countless times on TV.

And that is a good point, especially as someone in page 1 said, if you wear the same thing all the time like the endgame Oblivion Armor people would recognize you because you are the only person with it. Descriptions work well but they would need to be better than merely saying he wore a top hat, especially in London in the late 1800s. But it is still a good point.
